If you were paying attention, this might not come as a shock to you — but the relationship between Gleyber Torres and the New York Yankees didn't continue too long after the 2024 MLB season ended.
After signing with the Tigers last week, Torres said that a return to the Yanks wasn't in the cards because the team didn't offer him a contract — but he had nothing but positive things to say about the organization where he spent seven seasons.
"I've got great friends there, great communication with the entire organization. I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years, but now I'm with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year."

Consistency wasn't the name of Torres' game during his time with the Yanks. His 2022 and 2023 seasons were his most productive, but came back down to earth in 2024. He departs New York with 138 career home runs and a career OPS of .774.
Torres' bat was always good enough to keep him in the lineup; his fielding is where Yankees fans lost patience with him. Torres, at times, would look like a Gold Glove winner, and other times sort of just forget how to play the position. He was an anomaly out there, every ground ball a rollercoaster. Best of luck to Tigers fans.
In 2025, the Yankees have a few options at second base to replace Torres; Oswaldo Cabrera and Jazz Chisholm Jr both have experience manning second, and Chisholm sliding from third over to second might make the most sense.

Old Guy at the Club: Ageism in America
It started when the CEO of United Health Care was assassinated.
The killer had etched into his bullets the words “deny” depose” and defend,” three words used by insurance companies to deny a person medical insurance coverage for an ailment.
It’s no secret that our health care system is broken. The hoops you have to go through to get the most basic things are ridiculous. I have friends who are battling terminal illnesses who get questioned harder than a third grader who threw his ball through the principal’s window.
It needs to be fixed and quickly.
And, apparently, one way to do that is to murder the CEO of a health care organization.
I did not know the man. I know he got his job three years ago. I know that folks have been denied care for decades. This guy didn’t invent that idea. He carried it out and probably thousands of people died as a result.
But then, I started seeing posts by folks to the effect that they lacked any sense of compassion for this man, his family, his friends and co-workers. They were almost glad he was dead. “Just another billionaire sucking the life out of poorer people,” was the gist of their statements. It was pure unadulterated “eat the rich” rhetoric. And, it made me terribly sad.
Because I always think: “What if it was somebody I liked?”
I remember how I felt when John Lennon was murdered. I couldn’t make sense of it. I was numb for days afterward. The thought that somebody who wrote and sang about peace and love could be gunned down in front of his own apartment was terrifying and provoked a profound hatred of guns and violence in me.
So, excuse me if I don’t applaud somebody using violence to bring attention to a very important matter. The coward who shot John thought he had a reason. Madmen usually do.
What I asked my friends online and what I’m still asking is: Where is OUR sense of compassion? Where is our empathy? On what meridian does our sense of justice lie? Do we anguish over the deaths of countless African American citizens, but think it’s okay when a billionaire is the target of hatred?
Shouldn’t we be more concerned about the hatred? Should it matter that we didn’t like the person who was murdered? Isn’t there a distinction between our feelings about a person and the terrible act that removes a life from the world?

John Donne wrote that centuries ago, and yet it still rings true. And, again…what if this were somebody we all liked?
Somebody we did like passed that same week. He was a solid fixture in the theater community of Staten Island and we all adored him. His passing leaves a huge hole in our community and our hearts. There were outpourings of love for this man, mine among them, online at the same time somebody wrote that they had absolutely no compassion for the rich at all.
How can that be right? Are there absolutely no rich people in the world that do right things? I can think of a couple.
Oh, I know…their motives might be questionable. Maybe they fund a library or a kid’s playground as a tax write off. Look at those families who funded museums while making a “killing” from drugs that had terrible side effects.
Again, I am not excusing the health care system. It ceased to be of use when it became for profit. But, how do we fix it? And why should that fact allow us to excuse our compassion for even the worst human being?
Well, local legislation is one thing. Each of us can decide how we want to vote on local issues, and national ones as well. But, let’s remember, we just voted into office a group of people whose sole mission is to destroy the institutions they are head of. Not a very hopeful scenario.
We have to learn to advocate for ourselves, to be informed consumers. I recently had to purchase a medication from a local pharmacy. They quoted me a price. I asked if it was covered under my insurance. They checked and found out it was. The price dropped by about $60. I’m married to a woman with diabetes. We ask these questions regularly. In the same way, we know to ask our health providers: “Well, if it isn’t that, what else can it be?”
We have to stay alert. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
Apparently, the price of good health is also vigilant pursuit of an answer to a simple question: Is this covered?
Gandhi once said an eye for an eye leads to a country of the blind.
With health care the way it is, none of us can afford that.
Hold those magnificent grey heads high and take exceptional care of yourselves.
