LUXEMBOURG–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec 26, 2024–
ispace EUROPE S.A. (ispace-EUROPE), the Luxembourg-based subsidiary of ispace, inc., and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) have signed a payload services agreement to transport a Laser Retroreflector Array (LaRA2) to enable accurate position measurements on the Moon via laser ranging experiments, the two organizations announced today.

The agreement marks the first full-scale contract between ispace-EUROPE and ASI, with both organizations looking to joint future lunar development.
LaRA2 is a small, robust, and lightweight instrument built to work without any power source and to survive the harsh surface conditions on the Moon for an extended period of time. It features a precise array of retroreflectors (corner cube prisms) designed to reflect laser beams directly back to their source, regardless of the angle of incidence. The same instrument is installed on the NASA’s Perseverance rover, currently exploring Mars.
“This collaboration with the Italian Space Agency is a great example of how commercial companies are enablers to lunar science led by space agencies. Adding LaRA2 to the existing retroreflectors deployed on the Moon will open new possibilities of mapping the surface for scientific research and will help refining navigation capabilities to enable future missions” said Julien Lamamy, CEO of ispace-EUROPE.
The technology will be integrated into the APEX 1.0 lunar lander as part of ispace technologies U.S. (ispace-U.S.) Mission 3, currently scheduled to land in the Schrödinger Basin (far side of the Moon, South Pole) in 2026. After touchdown, ASI will enable long-term laser ranging observations of LaRA2 by lunar orbiters.
By coupling the LaRA2 measurements with measurements from other retroreflectors previously deployed on the near side of the Moon during the Apollo missions and others, ASI scientists expect to gather valuable data that will help mapping the Moon and improve navigation and positioning on the lunar surface.
ispace is leveraging its global presence through its three business units in Japan, the U.S., and Luxembourg, for the simultaneous development of upcoming missions. Mission 2, featuring the RESILIENCE lunar lander and TENACIOUS micro rover, is led by ispace Japan and is now scheduled for launch no earlier than mid-January 2025. Mission 3, debuting the APEX 1.0 lunar lander, is led by ispace-U.S. and is expected to launch in 2026. Mission 6, which will utilize the Series 3 lander, currently being designed in Japan, is scheduled to be launched by 2027.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Prosecutors in Taiwan indicted former presidential candidate and Taiwan People’s Party founder Ko Wen-je on corruption charges Thursday, accusing him of taking bribes during his time as mayor of the island’s capital.
Ko, a former mayor of Taipei, is accused of accepting bribes related to a real estate development during his time in office, according to the prosecutors’ statement. He’s also accused of embezzling political donations.
If convicted on all charges, he faces a possible 28.5 years in jail.
Core to the case is a development owned by Core Pacific City group in Taipei. Prosecutors say Ko allowed the company to evade city building regulations in exchange for bribes.
“The defendant, Ko, violated his vow as a mayor to not accept bribes, and abide by our national laws. Instead, Ko intended to help the group obtain billions of dollars in illegal benefits, while collecting millions in bribes,” said Kao Yi-shu, the lead prosecutor, while unveiling the charges Thursday.
While Ko could not be reached, he has previously denied the allegations of bribery and corruption. His party said the charges were a case of political persecution.
“With this kind of abuse of power, the government is being reduced to a political thug,” said Lin Fu-nan, a member of the TPP’s central committee. “We call on the black hand of politics not to reach into the judiciary.”
Ko, a former doctor, burst onto the political scene to win Taipei’s 2014 mayoral race. He served two terms from 2014 to 2022.
Ko founded the TPP in 2019 as an alternative to the two-party system, promising a break from politics as usual.
He ran for President this year. Despite finishing third, he attracted attention for his appeal to young voters. Taiwan’s politics is mostly dominated by two main political parties, the Nationalist Party (Kuomingtang) and the Democratic Progressive Party.
Ko’s Taiwan People’s Party, while small, is allied with the Kuomingtang in Taiwan’s legislature and helped it pass three laws last week that critics say have paralyzed the Constitutional Court and will weaken Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s ability to carry out his political agenda.

Many thanks to the Republican representatives who joined with Democrats to pass last-minute legislation to keep the government funded and refused to be coerced/extorted by Elon Musk and the president-elect into removing the debt ceiling for federal borrowing. An uncapped borrowing limit would have enabled the government to spend practically unchecked.
Those courageous Republicans have been threatened with being primaried if they didn’t bend their knees. Is this coercion what the new administration has in mind for every piece of legislation that they want to be passed? Or in the near term, for the approval of the chosen Cabinet nominees, no matter how poorly qualified the nominee may be?
I pray that all GOP House and Senate members will do what we elected them to do — look out for all the people of the United States.

I read with dismay Lett’s attempt to “sanewash” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s dodgy choice for Health and Human Services secretary. He takes pains to make the point that Kennedy is not anti-vaccine but instead anti-mandate.
Why don’t we examine him with his own words? From an AP news article just last month: “I see somebody on a hiking trail carrying a little baby and I say to him, better not get them vaccinated,” Kennedy said.
And another AP article last summer reported that Kennedy said in a podcast interview that “There’s no vaccine that is safe and effective.” Does this sound like someone that would be a champion of vaccines? When he says he won’t take any vaccines away, do you believe him?
As a practicing physician, I have no love for big Pharma and share Lett’s concerns about the Food and Drug Administration’s drug approval process, but I fail to see how approving someone who has been repeatedly anti-science for decades would even remotely have a chance at fixing these issues.

My husband and I are native Dallasites and were lucky enough to be part of the first national tests for the new polio vaccine conducted in 1954. We were in the second grade in the Park Cities. Although our parents, we learned later, thought this might be frightening, they were very willing to trust the science to eliminate the scourge of the dreadful disease that caused paralysis and death. It was a very scary time.
The idea that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is nominated by Donald Trump to lead the Department of Health and Human Services is so dangerous and backward thinking. Kennedy’s attorney, Aaron Siri, who is making the rounds of Congress with Kennedy, has actually petitioned the government to revoke the polio vaccine approval.
Are we to return to a time of rampant disease and fear? Our country has the most brilliant scientists in the world, and their work makes the lives of all the people on the globe better.

Lett’s op-ed commits the same fallacy that led to Donald Trump’s election in 2016. A fallacy leveled at progressives for decades by conservatives who never took the time to listen to us: change for the sake of change.
Everyone can see our health care system is broken. Health care companies will gladly throw us to the wolves to increase quarterly profits by 0.1%. Capitalism gets in the way of medicine and science, and Americans face the consequences.
With such a grim reality, it can be tempting to look toward any person who promises “change” and think that means “change for the better.” Alas, no matter how bad things get, they can always get worse.
When Robert K. Kennedy Jr. railed against the pharmaceutical industry on progressive outlets, the pundits would ask if he supported single-payer health care or nationalizing pharma. If the companies are evil, shouldn’t we take away their power?
Kennedy always blubbered in response. He doesn’t question capitalism, he questions science. Throwing out the good stuff and keeping the bad stuff is a change, but it’s not an improvement.

I watch the actions of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy with interest. I’m an old man now, and in my career I’ve seen lots of people approach complex situations by saying: “This is simple. All you have to do is…” Pro tip: This is how you recognize a fool. It’s never “All you have to do.”
This is because complex situations are also dynamic. When you cut the beast, it screams. Where these people fail is not on move one but on moves two through 10. Usually, they’re gone by move three because they don’t like the accountability and they’ve gone back to something they understand.
Fixing the deficit is like losing weight. You didn’t get overweight in a day. You can’t get skinny in a day, either, and as there was pleasure in getting heavy, there will be pain in getting skinny.
I’ll be interested to see if the volunteer billionaires are still around for the pain.

Located between larger and more well-known border cities El Paso and Eagle Pass, Texas, both at the heart of the migrant debate, Presidio is a much smaller and lesser-known West Texas border town with big-time culture, small-town drama, significant history, and captivating personalities. It is also home to the Presidio International Dragstrip.
Established in 1683, Presidio is one of the oldest towns in the United States. In the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, it’s known as “the meeting of two rivers” because of its proximation to the merging of the Rio Grande and the Rio Conchos rivers—the same could be said about the merging of the two cultures, as locals from both sides of the border come back and forth over the Presidio–Ojinaga, Mexico, International Bridge, sometimes off-and-on on a daily basis to visit family, go to work, or attend school.
Since 2013, the Presidio International Dragstrip has hosted a monthly bracket race, welcoming hundreds of enthusiasts and hot rod lovers. Held on Saturday evenings, the races have become a destination and positive gathering of people from both sides of the border to compete and share in a lively multicultural environment.
It is not unique to find whole families spending an afternoon on the track, fading into dusk, then moonlight out over the dusty Chihuahuan, supporting their fathers, sons, daughters, and boyfriends—or collaborating at the garage, as the mechanical task is a social one if anything. Unique characters with storied faces and fashion with a tale cull from the remote Presidio and bordering Ojinaga—or OJ as the locals call it. The setting is gorgeous—a colorful, run-down track in a valley overlooking the foothills and the mountains of Mexico. And the cars found in this story are characters of their own. With an international scope, local basketball coach and high school teacher Robert Romero—who also moonlights as president of Presidio Drag Racing—sums it up: “You wouldn’t think that there are fast and powerful cars here, but we have them.”

‘We will ensure that what we have seen in terms of infiltration tunnels and threats, which this heroic war has eliminated, will not happen again’
Defense Minister Israel Katz visited the Philadelphi Corridor on Wednesday, reaffirming Israel’s determination to maintain security control of the Gaza Strip. Accompanied by the Southern Command chief, Major General Yaron Finkelman, and other commanders, he received an operational and intelligence briefing on the IDF’s activities in the region.
“The security control of Gaza will remain in the hands of the IDF, which can act as it sees fit to eliminate threats, prevent tunnel digging, dismantle terrorist infrastructures, and prevent the organization of terrorists seeking to harm the State of Israel or its soldiers,” said Katz.
He emphasized that lessons from the past had been learned in the current war, which represented a shift from the containment policy of decades.
“We will ensure that what we saw in terms of infiltration tunnels and threats, and that this heroic war eliminated, will not happen again,” Katz said. “Like in Lebanon, Syria, and the east, we will ensure that no threat will weigh on Israeli localities, citizens, and soldiers again.” The minister also announced the creation of “buffer zones and dominant positions” to ensure Israel’s security, while pursuing the two war objectives: “to free all hostages and defeat Hamas.”
“There will be no political or military Hamas here anymore – a new reality will emerge from the battles that continue day after day,” he added, praising the determination of the soldiers, including the reservists, who told him: “Go on, let us go to the end, ensure security and bring back the hostages.”

The Seahawks face a must-win scenario when they take on the Bears on Thursday Night Football.

The Bears host the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football from Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. 
It’s a must-win situation for Seattle (8-7) which sits a game behind the first-place Rams in the NFC West. The two division hopefuls will meet in Los Angeles in the final week of the regular season. 
The Seahawks will look to keep pace and snap a two-game skid on Thursday. Veteran quarterback Geno Smith battled through injury in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions. 
Chicago (4-11) hopes to snap a nine-game losing streak in its home finale. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams played well in Sunday’s loss to the Lions, throwing for 334 yards and two touchdowns. 
After throwing four interceptions in his first three games, Williams has just one interception across his last twelve outings. 
Thursday Night Football will begin at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 19. 
The game will be played at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. 
Thursday Night Football can be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, with Al Michaels (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst), and Kaylee Hartung (reporter) on the call.

The Honey Browser extension has gained a cult following online for its ability to find the best discounts. However, the company has now been hit with allegations of duping users.
YouTuber MegaLag first brought forth the allegations in a recent video, accusing the PayPal-owned company of only selectively showing users the best deals and discount codes. The channel also claims that the Honey Browser extension, which is free and heavily promoted by influencers, often only shows smaller discounts, such as 5%, even when 30% savings are available.
Honey was launched in 2012, and it went viral on Reddit within no time. By 2014, NewsX reports, the company had gained almost a million users. The process was simple enough: Install the extension and activate it, and it would automatically apply discount codes at checkout. Per the outlet, PayPal swooped in and bought the company for $4 billion in 2020, changing its name to PayPal Honey.
MegaLag is accusing the company of deceiving customers and costing them money. He also claims that Honey is on the receiving end of these extra profits, as these sales are redistributed through affiliate links. This, in turn, also rips off influencers, snatching away commissions they would otherwise receive for increasing sales on their own.
The channel claims that while initially, the Honey Browser extension would only pick up discount codes and automatically apply them for customers, over the years, the company has begun partnering up with businesses themselves, offering codes, like “HONEY10” code for 10% off. Hence, the Honey Browser extension now picks up its own discounts instead of ones that offer larger savings.

Honey and PayPal have yet to comment on the situation, though the claims have sparked a wave of backlash and outrage online. Co-founders Ryan Hudson and George Ruan have not issued a statement yet.
The Honey Browser extension incident has also paved the way for an increasing demand for transparency in the industry to circumvent misleading practices and their impact on consumers and content creators.
