Animal Samaritans, Boozehounds Palm Springs unite for LA wildfire relief – Desert Sun

The spirit of collaboration shines in times of adversity, and on Jan. 17, Coachella Valley shined bright.
Animal welfare organization Animal Samaritans and local Palm Springs eatery Boozehounds joined forces to gather pet supplies and cash contributions for our neighbors in Los Angeles who were affected by the wildfires.
All donations were given to the Pasadena Humane Society to support its efforts in aiding animals that have been injured or are without shelter because of the fires. Guests that day brought supplies like pet food, cat litter, pet kennels and crates, leashes, pet toys and hygiene products.
The Coachella Valley Firebirds also participated by conducting their own successful event and then contributing a vanload of supplies.
The care and concern of the animal welfare community was undeniable at Boozehounds. Tom Snyder, CEO of Animal Samaritans, said, “Improving the lives of animals and people is core to our mission — it’s why we exist. With the intensity and enormity of the situation, we felt compelled to do something for the victims of the wildfires.”

Valerie Kattz, marketing and public relations specialist, said: “Our residents stepped up in a big way. It was incredibly moving, seeing our trailer packed from floor to ceiling with essential items that will provide relief for those affected by the fires. I couldn’t be prouder of our compassionate community of helpers.”
Boozehounds, a dog-friendly restaurant and bar, has been involved in the community since opening in 2021. Owner Bryan Rogers said: “Working with Animal Samaritans is a natural fit for us. We share a passion for bringing animal lovers together and encouraging pet rescue and adoption.”
The fundraising event on Jan. 17 has special significance for him. “In times of disaster, humanity and friendship reveal themselves, and the Coachella Valley is a steadfast sister to Los Angeles. We’re deeply moved by the impact the fires are having on L.A. residents and their beloved pets and on the strays and wild animals that have been rescued. Our community’s response shows how we can combine our passion for animals with helping those that are suffering.”
Pet lovers and their friends came to Boozehounds filled with love and kindness in their hearts. But guest Tammy Preast also stressed the importance of a long-term strategy for helping Los Angeles. “We need to recognize that once the fires are out, the story isn’t over,” she said. “There will still be a need for assistance and shelter. Thousands are homeless, and having beloved pets to care for makes it even harder to find suitable accommodation. That compounds the heartache.”
Preast isn’t just thinking about helping, she wants to make things happen. “My husband and I are considering opening our home in Palm Springs to someone in need over the next six to 12 months. If you have a home that’s available to rent, or if you can care for someone’s pets while they rebuild their life, please do it. Compassion, empathy and action are critical — today and always.”
Animal Samaritans continues to collect donations for the Pasadena Humane Society. Donations can be made online at animalsamaritans.org/firerelief.
