In breaking news, President Trump just designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for the widespread slaughter of Christians.
This comes on the heels of our letter to the Secretary of State just days ago and critical meetings at the White House and with the Speaker of the House this past week, highlighting the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. We directly requested that the Trump Administration place Nigeria back on this critical persecution watchlist. We thank him for taking this important step.
President Trump stated:
Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!
DONALD J. TRUMP,
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
This is a tremendous step in protecting Christians. For years, the ACLJ has been calling attention to the genocide of Christians in Nigeria.
In 2021, then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (now Senior Counsel for Global Affairs with the ACLJ) credited the ACLJ’s efforts in placing Nigeria on the CPC list in the first place: “The work that the ACLJ did was very informative for our team at the State Department when we began to evaluate whether or not to designate Nigeria as a CPC. The ACLJ contributed to the data set that underlaid the decision I made.”
Unfortunately, soon after taking office, President Biden removed Nigeria from the CPC list, and the situation went from bad to worse, spiraling into a genocide of Christians.
Our letter last week to the Trump Administration highlighted the dire need:
Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places for Christians. In 2025, there were, on average, thirty-two Christians killed each day in Nigeria. A 2025 report from the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (“Intersociety”) detailed how in the first seven months of this year Islamist groups have killed 7,087 Christians and abducted 7,800 others for their faith. Additionally, 12 million Christians have been displaced since 2009. If the trend of violence towards Christians in Nigeria continues, it is projected that “‘Christianity could be wiped out from Nigeria by 2075[.]’”
We called on the Trump Administration to take the first step of placing Nigeria back on the CPC list, which President Trump has now done. Now we will continue advocating at the U.N. – armed with the CPC designation – to pressure Nigeria to protect its persecuted Christian population.
This is a fantastic first step, one each of you made possible by taking action with us. But now we must redouble our efforts for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ. Continue to take action with us by signing our petition to defend Christians from genocide in Nigeria
