If you’re a professed Christian currently still supporting this President and this Administration, and you’re on your way to church on Sunday, here are a few things you might talk with God about in between the songs and sermons:
Outstanding, John, as always. I remain deeply disturbed and bewildered by others who call themselves Christian who excuse this vile, vulgar, and vicious man. There is not a single thing that he does or says that embodies the teachings of Jesus. There WILL be a reckoning.
Amen! You have provided a summary of all the reasons I have all but abandoned the church, and I am a cradle Episcopalian, one of the denominations that is on the right (correct) side of Jesus. But I am having a very hard time believing that any of it is real if Jesus and the God we are to worship are allowing this evil to consume the world…again. I get it, the inconsistent triad – God is all powerful – God is Love – Evil exists. But to allow this heresy to go unchallenged. To allow this heresy to take on the mantle of Christianity and to presume to speak for all Christians is a bridge too far. And it breaks my heart.
WELL SAID.
I have Catholic friends who support djt and I can’t figure out if they are just grossly misinformed or what. They’re college educated, intelligent people. I think it’s similar to religious fundamentalism. Absolute certainty and no tolerance for ambiguity whatsoever. A deep emotional need to be CERTAIN and RIGHT. Are they buying that all the appalling behavior of the “administration” (regime) isn’t really happening? That the news media is “fake” except for Faux news Newsmax and OAN? It’s painful to me to see someone I’ve known and loved for over 40 years become so absolute deluded.
I am a Catholic myself. Abortion is a complex issue and any Catholic not treating it as such is not serious. I am politically pro-choice even if I agree that elective abortion is not the choice I would support. I know two things. First, it’s not my choice. Period. Secondly, the characterization of women using it as a birth control fallback is grossly simplistic and ignores the difficult choice that families and women have to make. The government should have no role in that.
Thank you for your comments. It’s that fundamentalism/absolutism again… Drives me crazy. My
belief = fact, my opinion = the truth. It just crazy. And no, it’s not an issue the government should be involved in. Calling abortion “murder” is a way of justifying government interference I guess. My position is if you haven’t been there you don’t have any right to judge.
The Catholics I know hear the word "abortion" and all sense leaves their brain.
Agree! I’ve counseled many women and fathers making the agonizing decision to terminate a pregnancy because of extremely severe disability and the fact that a (wanted) child is unlikely to survive outside the womb. When I mentioned this to the Catholic friend I wrote about she said, “So they just go ahead and kill the child now?”. No empathy or any attempt to see another point of view.
I have asked myself these same questions for the last 9 years! Raised Catholic, but fallen away as an adult. I am heartened to see the Catholic and many other religions speaking out about the evils of this regime. It’s good to see Churches on the right side of history.
The Pope and bishops have spoken out. In Florida, I have yet to see their words trickle down into the churches.
Perfectly stated! Now, let those congregations that do not support the disgusting support of a rapist stand up and say out loud we will no longer tolerate or support him.
My favorite parable: 2,000 years ago in Rome, there were people who upset the status quo, talked about peace, and loving their neighbors. The Romans called them Christians, and threw them to the lions. Now we have people demonstrating against a cruel government that harms the poor, the needy and the underserved in favor of the wealthy and privileged, and the government calls them woke, and leftists, and throws them to the Christians.
How unbelievable powerful! I will never understand how any Christian, anyone of any honest faith can support him or his administration.
Unfortunately, in order to ask these questions one has to admit that they may not have all the answers. I think it is the certainty that floors me the most and this predates Trump. People so sure that their bigotry and hatred was righteous. There is no introspection there. There is only the cocky confidence that they have it all figured out.
Sadly, this essay is unlikely to reach the eyes and ears of the MAGA christians that most need to see/hear it. While I endorse the message, it feels like "preaching to the choir".
Maybe it could be printed off and copies could quietly be placed under windshield wipers at churches or at other appropriate sites.
There are not enough tears for all these broken hearts 💔
Thank you for your words. I truly believe that Christianity, (the Jesus kind), died when the Trump Republican Party used the word "Christian" to get votes. There never has been anything remotely Christian about the work Trump and his people have done since he came to power. Trump has been evil long before he was elected. He showed us who he was before the Presidency but now he has shown us who all his followers are. That is the most alarming part. I have lost my family, so many friends, and I’ve lost faith and trust in anything with "Christian" in the label. It’s like a bad word now. I follow your writing because it is one of the only things that I resonate with that aligns with Christianity. Most days I feel hopeless. Some days I read you and listen to others and feel a slight hope again that maybe the whole world hasn’t gone mad. Thank you for that.
I’m an agnostic, but Amen John!
What you do unto the least of these, my brothers, you do unto me.
I share your prayer, that all Christians today need to be grounded in the Beatitudes. May more awaken & open their minds and hearts to the pain, suffering, & fear of so many. Taking away food & healthcare are the acts of an enemy to all for it will seriously stress the entire society. The few spared struggle are a big part of cause.
Thank you John . I appreciate your ability to articulate these truths so clearly.
