On Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, a service was held at Holy Cross Church recognizing over 40 parishioners who passed away during the year from among the four Catholic churches in the Mille Lacs area, including Holy Cross in Onamia, Sacred Heart in Wahkon, St. Ritas in Hillman and St. Therese Little Flower Church near Vineland.
Following that service, parish priests Rev. Jerry Schick and Rev. Marvin Enneking made their way to the Catholic cemetery just south of Onamia where they were to preside over the dedication of the renovated “reflection area” of this hallowed site.
Father Schick (above, right) delivered a short prayer in front of the gathering, saying, “O God most high, in this sacred place, on this holy ground, and in the presence of your love, we pray for your blessing of our reflection area. In the years to come, we will come to this place to honor all of our loved ones who are buried here. We ask that you continue to enfold them in your mercy, love and peace.”
Those present at the event were then invited to sprinkle holy water on the newly-built centerpiece of the burial grounds. (pictured, right)
The renovation project was a two-year effort promoted by the Cemetery Board with funds in the amount of $18,500 coming from local donors.
Speaking on behalf of the project, Cemetery Board member Bill Lundeen said there was an old altar on the site that was in need of repair, so the Board thought it was time to renovate that area.
The design concept was the creation of Board members Tom Cunz, Louie Gravel and Lundeen. The concrete and granite structure was the work of Whitney Construction out of Pierz.
