The Institute on Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS) plans on exploring new understandings of the spiritual experience at its upcoming annual conference on Star Island, N.H.
“Spiritual Experience: A Scientific, Philosophical and Theological Retreat” will be held from June 22 through 29 bringing together educators, ministers, civic leaders with scientists, philosophers and theologians for a variety of lectures, discussion and paper presentations.
Program chairs John Calvin Chatlos and Catherine Keller say the gathering will explore those experiences that appear to be linked to creativity, vitality, a feeling of wholeness and a sense of meaning and purpose, awe and wonder. Dr. Chatlos is a psychiatrist, who has been practicing for over 40 years working with difficult or unclear diagnoses, unresponsive medication treatments, unresolved issues of life trauma, and exploring concerns with spiritual experience. Keller is the George T. Cobb Professor of Constructive Theology in the Theological School and Graduate Division of Religion of Drew University, where she teaches courses in process, political, and ecological theology.
Speakers include: Kathy Duffy, Professor Emerita of Physics, President of the American Teilhard Association, on the Board of Cosmos and Creation; Julia Mossbridge, American cognitive neuroscientist, author and educator worked on parapsychological studies, notably on precognition and presentiment effects; and Harriet Rossetto,a trainer for the National Association of Social Workers, author of the book Sacred Housekeeping: A Spiritual Memoir.
