Dick Capri, who began performing stand-up comedy in the 1960s, died in his sleep from an aortic dissection on December 26. He was 93.
Born Richard Capri in Reading, Pennsylvania, Capri honed his early skills as a comedian as a clerk in his father’s grocery store doing comedy mimes of the customers. Eventually, he pursued a career as an impressionist and began performing on programs such as The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.
In 1973, Capri rose to prominence when he toured with Englebert Humperdinck. He also appeared opposite stars in the caliber of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Tom Jones at venues such as Radio City Music Hall and the Minskoff Theater in New York, as well as in Las Vegas and London through the course of his career. And he performed for presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush.
Capri made his Broadway debut in 1991 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, co-starring in the Catskills On Broadway, which ran for 14 months and later toured nationally. He was active doing his stand-up in hotels in the Catskills, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno and Tahoe, among other locations. And he had four acting credits, according to IBDb, including the 2010 film One Angry Man, which was inspired by the Henry Fonda 1957 theatrical of the same name.

“Some say it’s not good to meet your idols cause you could be disappointed but not with Dick. From the first time I met him at the #friarsclub he could not have been nicer, sweeter or more down to earth,” wrote comedian Mike Fine on social media. “An absolute giant of a performer and more importantly as a person. Lucky to have called him a friend.”
Wrote comedian Alan Zweibel: “What I think I loved the most about him was his simple honesty. A man who had brushes with greatness, yet managed to stay his humble self. R.I.P. Dick. Thank you for all you taught me.”

Illinois quick hits: IDNR warns of bird flu; ‘Space Force’ added to statute – Cities 92.9

IDNR warns of bird flu
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is monitoring a large event of waterfowl mortality at numerous locations throughout Illinois. Test results received so far indicate bird flu is the cause.
Members of the public are encouraged to report concentrations of five or more deceased birds found at one location to IDNR district wildlife biologists on the agency’s website.
Due to the risk of infection to other animals, dogs and other pets should be kept away from the carcasses of birds that may have died.
‘Space Force’ added to statute
Throughout Illinois state statute where any reference to armed services are made, a new state law adds the United States Space Force.
Impacted public acts include the Flag Display and various personnel codes.
The U.S. Space Force was created by Donald Trump during his first term in 2019.
Christmas tree recycling
Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists are collecting live Christmas trees to be used as fish habitat in local lakes after the holidays.
The collected trees will be bundled together, weighted, and submerged in lakes, providing habitat for multiple fish species and promoting algae growth for insects that attract fish for anglers.
Trees must be free of stands, lights, ornaments, and tinsel. Wreaths and garlands will not be accepted. Drop-off location information and instructions are located on the IDNR Office of Fisheries website.

Bitcoin's Power Play: BTC Maintaining Critical Chart Formation Sparks Upside Potential | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist

Bitcoin‘s potential for a significant upside move in the short term continues to gain traction as a positive price trend emerges on its daily chart. With upward momentum currently building, the much-anticipated next move will put the digital asset back above the pivotal $100,000 mark.
In a recent analysis, Trader Tardigrade, a technical expert and trader, cited a price trend that suggests Bitcoin could be poised for a notable spike in the upcoming days. Bullish predictions like this are rising within the community again following BTC’s recent rally that brought its price close to the $100,000 point on Christmas.
Trader Tardigrade, navigating BTC’s price action, highlighted that the asset continues to maintain Ascending Channel formation despite recent waning price performances. With the potential of a breakout on the upside, this development signals robust market confidence and resilience.
According to the expert, the Bitcoin Ascending Channel has held steady after making a false break from the pattern’s lower support line. Since the recovery of the channel, BTC has retested the support line just below $98,000 once again which is crucial for its next trajectory.
In the event that Bitcoin sustains this level, Trader Tardigrade expects a move to the channel’s upper resistance line located at the $110,000 level. As institutional interest and retail investor sentiment grow, BTC’s breakout from this bullish pattern may fuel a much larger rally to uncharted territory. Thus far, the market is closely monitoring for catalysts that may trigger the much-expected surge to this cycle’s peak as confidence in BTC’s prospects grows.
Bitcoin has demonstrated positive price moves over the last few days, indicating renewed strength. On Wednesday, Trader Tardigrade revealed that the crypto asset closed above a key resistance level, marking a breakout from a Descending Channel formation.
The descending channel pattern is characterized by two downward parallel trend lines representing lower highs and lower lows. As the cryptocurrency escapes the downside action that has defined the channel for several weeks, this breakout indicates a change in price trend. Due to this, the analyst is confident that BTC could rally to the $100,000 mark shortly and reach new all-time highs.
After starting the day on a bearish note, BTC is gradually transitioning toward a bullish outlook. Presently, the digital asset is valued at $96,510, indicating a 1% increase in the past day.
Bitcoin’s recent decline is partially attributed to a significant inflow of BTC into crypto exchanges. This development is often seen as a sign of a potential sell-off in the market, causing investors to secure gains. Following a protracted decline in exchange reserves, this shift may serve as a precursor to short-term market turbulence.

Charleston, SC — Historian Sherman E. Pyatt’s newest novel, Standing in the Gap, is a captivating exploration of Gullah culture, chronicling African American family life from 1915 to 1917 on Wadmalaw Island and in Charleston. This poignant story weaves themes of heritage, suspense, and spirituality through the life of young Jacob Rouse, a Gullah child with a profound connection to the spiritual world.
Set against the rich backdrop of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the novel follows the LoganRouse family of Wadmalaw Island, whose ancestors carried their spiritual traditions from Africa centuries ago. The story begins on a humid summer day as a midwife arrives to assist in the birth of Jacob’s cousin. Readers quickly discover that Jacob is no ordinary child—born “under the veil” and marked by a distinctive birthmark, he is believed to be a divine gift, standing as a bridge “in the gap” between Heaven and Earth.
Written in authentic Gullah dialect, Standing in the Gap offers readers an immersive cultural experience. To assist readers in navigating the language, the novel includes a helpful glossary of Gullah terms.
Sherman E. Pyatt is a Charleston native with deep roots in the Lowcountry. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Johnson C. Smith University and a Master of Library and Information Science from Indiana University, later completing certifications in archival sciences at Georgia State University. Pyatt has worked as a research librarian, interim director, and archivist at various institutions, including The Citadel Military College, the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston, and South Carolina State University. A dedicated community volunteer, Pyatt served as a commissioner on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor (2016–2020) and currently contributes as a research assistant at the International African American Museum in Charleston.
His previous publications include Martin Luther King, Jr., An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1986), Apartheid: A Selective Annotated Bibliography, 1978-1987 (Garland Publishing, 1990), A Dictionary and Catalog of African American Folklife of the South (Greenwood Press, 1999), Charleston, South Carolina: Black America Series (Arcadia Publishing, 2000), Burke High School: 1894-2006 (Arcadia Publishing, 2007), and The Other Side of Skillet: Healthy and Alternative Eating in the Lowcountry (Lulu Publishing, 2015).
There will be a presentation and book signing on Tuesday, February 4th at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Library Society, located at 164 King St., Charleston, S.C. The event is open to the public, and tickets may be purchased.
