Mega Millions
The Mega Millions jackpot has surged to $1.15 billion after no one claimed Tuesday’s $950 million prize. For someone lucky enough to hit all six numbers on Friday, this could be the ultimate belated Christmas gift. The cash option for the prize stands at an impressive $516.1 million.
This $1.15 billion jackpot is the largest ever offered in December and marks only the seventh time in Mega Millions history that the prize has crossed the billion-dollar threshold. Previous billion-dollar jackpots were won in states including South Carolina (2018), Michigan (2021), Illinois (2022), and Florida, which holds the current record with its $1.602 billion win earlier this year.
Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, reflected on the holiday timing, saying, “We know that many people will likely receive tickets to Friday’s drawing as holiday gifts, and what a gift that would turn out to be if you ended up with a ticket worth a $1.15 billion jackpot.”
The numbers drawn on Tuesday—11, 14, 38, 45, 46, and Mega Ball 3—didn’t produce a grand prize winner, but four tickets matched the first five numbers, each earning $1 million. Those tickets were sold in California, Missouri, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania.
It’s been three months since a Houston-area resident claimed an $810 million Mega Millions prize after purchasing the winning ticket at a gas station in Sugar Land, Texas. If Friday’s jackpot is claimed, it will rank as the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history.
Mega Millions has called 2024 “the most unusual jackpot year,” with only three jackpots won so far—marking the fewest wins in any year since the game began in 2002.

MBOMBELA – You would expect a guy like Angelo Picoto, who recently featured on the cover of Men’s Health magazine, to be somewhat full of himself.
But this chopper pilot and ex-motocross champ from Mbombela, who currently lives and works in Mozambique, is anything but that.
These days he flies VIPs and tourists around to popular destinations which include the luxurious White Pearl Resort in Ponta Mamoli.
The Men’s Health Cover Guy competition is like a national election, with plenty of votes and nationwide coverage.
Picoto was recently announced the winner after thousands of votes, and ended up on the cover of the September issue of SA’a best-selling magazine. “There is no achievement that beats this one,” says Picoto.
Some now describe him as the local hero, and his phone has been buzzing ever since the magazine hit the shelves.
Even Armand Du Plessis, 2014 Mr South Africa, commended him on the great cover photo.
He is described as having ‘the perfect look’ and ‘an ambassador’ by the magazine, and impressing the judges with his overall attitude.
The September issue of Men’s Health is selling like hot beefcakes in Mbombela as friends and family buy up copies.
Picoto describes himself as a really chilled guy who likes be with his friends and spends time keeping fit. He tries to participate in as much sport as he can, enjoys being active and outside and calls his job a “paid for” hobby.
You could say that he’s a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Needless to say, due to the nature of motocross, he used to be pretty skinny and had long hair.

“Winning this competition did not happen overnight. I had to follow an extremely strict diet for seven months and I have figured out just how far one’s body can go. I am so blessed to be the winner of the cover competition.”
Men’s Health described him as not just a guy with rippling biceps and abs. He’s also an ambassador for Men’s Health, someone who embodies the qualities of the fit, healthy, positive lifestyle.
Abs are built in the kitchen,” he says, hence he eats only clean foods.
His training methods include heavy lifting with supersets and callisthenics sessions, six days on, one day off and some day he would even work in double sessions.
Up until four months ago, he had no trainer, and he says that there is no shame in seeking professional help.
“All you need to do is make a mindset change and stick to it. Do it for yourself, because no one else has to live your life. Making small diet changes can already make a huge difference.”
Now one for the ladies. Lowvelder asked Angelo if he is single, and what his perfect date would be.
The truth is, he is single and he describes the perfect date as nice and romantic, but he’s also the type of guy who would eat pap and wors with his hands if he had the chance. Oh and if you ever get to go on a date, he likes sushi, a lot.

On a sunny afternoon near downtown Los Angeles in 1893, the 92-year-old once-governor of Mexican California gazed out over a dusty plaza. He was broke, and he had just declined a large sum of money to attend the the Chicago World’s Fair. Despite his pennilessness, he gave a slight wave of his hand and a man showed up to help him into a buggy. Silently, Pío Pico rolled away into the warm evening.

Half a century earlier, in perhaps that same plaza in Los Angeles, Pico had received news of the Bear Flag Revolt – the opening salvo of the U.S. invasion of California in the Mexican-American War. Then, as governor of Mexican California, he had declared that “the North American nation can never be our friend,” accusing America of “the most unjust aggression of late centuries,” stealing Mexican land “without the slightest mark of shame.” He traveled south to request military assistance and soon after his return was placed under a three-week house arrest. A United States official at the time remarked that if the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo has not been ratified, Pico “would have been sent to Oregon or some other foreign country.” 
After the war, some newly arrived white Angelenos saw Pico as a suspicious nationalist, an ex-governor who might lead a coup against the American government at any moment. Favors Pico bestowed on his fellow Californios were inconvenient for the U.S. government’s takeover, and officials soon disparaged the man as “illiterate.” One San Francisco land-claim lawyer even described the ex-governor as “corrupt, non-English speaking, negroid, dwarfish.” California’s first state legislature elected under American rule passed a law stating that citizens with more than one-eighth black heritage, which included Pico, could not testify against whites. Despite the Anglo offensive waged against him, Pico sustained a position as California powerbroker throughout the latter half of the century. He owned vast swaths of Southern California. He opened the region’s first luxury hotel.
Pico also took part in a good deal of gambling. This habit amplified problems arising from his legal fees and loans to his fellow Californios, and by the 1880s Pico was in debt, his finances flailing. More lawsuits poured in from competing businessmen, and even from members of his family. The newly established Los Angeles Times commented on these trials, calling Pico’s efforts admirable, but not cautious – adding, with a touch of casual bigotry, that they were an “indiscretion peculiar to his race.” Those indiscretions consisted of being “too trustworthy, kind, and hospitable.” The trials and retrials continued. Then, in an 1891 ruling, the court found that “endless litigation, in which nothing was ever finally determined, would be worse than occasional miscarriages of justice.” 
Pico was left with nothing. California historian Kevin Starr summarizes the plight of Pico and his compatriots in Inventing the Dream: 
Just after the war, Pico had given a speech before the new California State Assembly in which he opined:
Now, in 1893, the notorious Southern California promoters Charles Fletcher Lummis and Harrison Gray Otis had procured for Pico an invitation to the Chicago World’s Fair as a delegate of the Old West. He was to represent the now-American state as the “last of the California dons.” The sum of money offered to appear at the fair was enormous. The Times published Pico’s reply to the Fair:
The next year, Pico died. The Times journalist who reported Pico’s reply to the World’s Fair wrote that after he had taken down Pico’s words, “the old man called one of his amigos to assist him in his buggy and drove off with an air that plainly said, ‘If I do not own this town I used to.'”

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The cleanup effort continues in Philadelphia's Frankford neighborhood after a massive warehouse fire on Christmas Eve.
Firefighters spent hours battling the blaze at Arway Linen in the 4700 block of Duffield Street.
On Thursday, an excavator could be seen ripping down the rest of the facility, which launders about one million items a week.
The entire building will have to come down, and with it so many memories as employees work to move forward and keep the business moving.
It's been in the neighborhood since December 1985. Mark Kolsky has been there just as long.

"I grew up in this building. It was horrible. I came here when I was 21. I'm 62. I lived in this neighborhood longer than any other neighborhood. It's a family-run business, it's horrible," he said.
Investigators are still searching for clues about what caused the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Concerned about the potential health impacts from all the smoke, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health sent out a warning for residents Wednesday to stay inside.
But after collecting air quality samples, city officials gave the all-clear Thursday, saying residents could return to normal routines.
"The fire caused no recorded rise in the amount of particulate matter, or PM 2.5, or other criteria pollutants at any of the City's monitors. Additionally, no toxic compounds were identified at the site of the fire at levels that would pose a threat to human health," the health department said in a statement.
