Cooperation between Moscow and Havana has reached a “qualitatively higher level,” stated Valentina Matvienko, president of the Russian Federation Council, during a virtual meeting with Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the Cuban Parliament.
According to the Tass agency on Telegram, Matvienko reaffirmed the support of Russian senators for Cuba’s demands that the United States lift the economic, trade, and financial blockade imposed on the island.
In the energy sector, Russia has committed to providing technical and logistical assistance to address the deep crisis facing the Cuban electrical system.
In November, Sergei Baldin, the Russian commercial representative on the island, outlined that the collaboration includes the supply of spare parts, specialized equipment, and technical support to prevent future collapses.
Among the joint projects, the modernization of thermal power plants, the construction of new generation units, and the expansion of oil extraction in Boca de Jaruco stand out, with the aim of reducing energy dependence on imports.
In the context of the recent recovery from natural disasters, Russia donated 16 UAZ Patriot all-terrain vehicles specially adapted for tropical weather. This contribution strengthens logistical support for recovery and reconstruction efforts on the island.
On the other hand, cooperation also extends to the educational and cultural spheres. Russia continues to support the Russian Teachers Abroad project and the university training of young Cubans in Russia.
Additionally, children from various provinces in Cuba will have the opportunity to enjoy a cultural holiday in St. Petersburg in 2025, as part of a program promoted by the local government to strengthen ties between the two nations.
The relationship between Cuba and Russia, forged over decades of strategic cooperation, has shown resilience and an ability to adapt to new challenges, albeit with its ups and downs.
From cultural and educational exchange to energy development, both countries aim to solidify an alliance that combines technical support, joint investments, and political solidarity, which is far more advantageous for the island amid a severe systemic crisis.
The relationship between Cuba and Russia has reached a “qualitatively superior level.” This has been reflected in various strategic cooperation agreements in areas such as energy, culture, and education, aimed at solidifying an alliance that includes technical assistance, joint investments, and political solidarity.
