Morris Perico, the chief operating officer of Meta Gaming Guild (MGG), discussed the shift to Play to Airdrop tournaments and his bullish outlook on tap-to-earn Telegram games.
In Focus: Meta Gaming Guild (MGG) is a Bicol-based community-driven organization focused on blockchain gaming.
Worth Reading:
The following excerpt from the interview, Perico discussed MGG’s focus on blockchain-based game development and web3 games, highlighting its transition from Play to Earn, which had reward system issues, to Play to Airdrop tournaments that reward only top players to maintain token value.
Nath Cajuday, Junior Editor, BitPinas: Good evening, everyone. We are here with the BitPinas team, and joining us is Mr. Morris Perico of MGG and AIS.
But before we proceed, sir, could you introduce MGG and Astra Interactive Studios (AIS)?
Morris Perico, Chief Operating Officer, Meta Gaming Guild: AIS focuses on game development under blockchain technology and web3.
While MGG caters to the games developed under web3 that we play, and we ask our community players to join and earn rewards.
Cajuday: We know that the hype or use case is a bit different now. It’s not as clear or focused as it was in Play to Earn. So how are you adjusting in terms of game development, and how do you communicate these trends to the community?
Perico: That’s correct. The concept of web3 has changed. Previously, it was all about Play to Earn. However, there were issues in the long run because the reward system was being abused.
What we did was shift the players to Play to Airdrop tournaments, where only the best players, not all players, receive rewards.
So we set up a leaderboard, for example, for this season, only the top 20 players will receive rewards.
This prevents abuse of the token reward system. If everyone gets a reward, they will liquidate it all at once, and the token price will drop. Kasi if you give rewards to everyone, everyone will liquidate the token you rewarded.
Cajuday: We just want to ask, how big is your community here in Bicol so far?
Perico: Our community actually started here in Bicol. During the pandemic, we helped thousands of players.
Right now, we have a community of around 5,000 members here in Bicol.
Cajuday: Speaking of Play to Airdrop that you mentioned earlier, there’s a popular trend now—the tap-to-earn or clicker games.
We’d like to ask your opinion on these clicker games. Do you think this trend is bullish or bearish? And do you think this is the new Play to Earn?
Morris: That’s a good question because we also explored The Open Network, which operates under Telegram.
I saw the trend of tap-to-earn games or Telegram bot games. They’re easy to access—as long as you have a Telegram account, you can participate.
So we also entered that space because we experienced that it was quite promising. For me, I’m bullish on tap-to-earn games.
However, Telegram recently faced an issue when its CEO was arrested in France, which affected the Telegram community. But as we discussed earlier, if a project has a strong community, it won’t be too affected. So I think Telegram bot games are fine, and many people will go there because they’re easy to access for crypto communities.
