SEC warns against six investment-taking entities – BusinessWorld Online

THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in separate advisories warned the public against the investment-taking activities of six entities that are not registered as a corporation or a partnership.
The commission identified them as PPG Investment Group, Livewell Multi-Ventures, BlackRock, Perfx Solution Corp., Trading Basket, and Flipkart. All are not authorized to solicit investments from the public.
PPG Investment, which also operates as Conamor Shop, was found to be engaging in investment-taking activities including borrowing capital from investors to buy beauty products. These products are said to be sold to consumers with investors profiting from the sales.
PPG Investment is not registered with the commission and operates without the necessary license, the regulator said.
Meanwhile, Livewell Multi-Ventures entices the public to invest in its advertisements, trading, agriculture, manufacturing and logistics operations.
According to the SEC, the entity offers three plans — Tester Plan, Home Starter, and Eagle Plan, at P500, P5,000 and P50,000, respectively. Investors are promised a fixed return income of 3% for 60 days or a total of 180% in two months.
In another advisory, the SEC warned the public against BlackRock, which it found to have been recruiting investors with a promised earning from “crude oil energy.”
BlackRock offers five types of investment plans that cost from P100 to P5,000 for a promised daily income as high as 5.4% and as low as 1.5%.
The entity shares the same name as a multinational investment company.
According to the regulator, the real BlackRock, Inc. believes that what the local entity offers is an active scam.
Separately, the commission found out that Trading Cartel, an entity which the commission previously issued an advisory against, is operating as Perfx Solution and Trading Basket or Trading Philippines.
All three entities, according to the SEC, are under Jeiel Jephone Ofreneo Canlas, who also goes by the name Japhon Canlas.
Meanwhile, Flipkart is said to have been offering an “advance fee” scheme, which is a form of fraud wherein investors are promised a large sum of money in exchange for a small up-front payment.
“If the victim makes the payment, the fraudster either asks for further fees from the victim or they simply disappear after obtaining the amount,” the regulator said.
The SEC told the public not to enter into such arrangements and advised them to report advance fee frauds or scams to the National Bureau of Investigation or the Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group. — Justine Irish D. Tabile

US President-elect Donald Trump has upended bipartisan efforts to avert a government shutdown, after he rejected a stopgap bill and pressed Republican lawmakers to either renegotiate it or risk their political careers. The new bill would have kept federal funding running at the current level until March after the current short-term spending plan expires on Friday night. Plus, the ongoing political crisis in Georgia is taking a toll on its economy, especially tourism.

Religious liberty group awards Texas town for keeping Nativity scene at courthouse – The Christian Post

The Christian Post
To enjoy our website, you’ll need to enable JavaScript in your web browser. Please click here to learn how.
A religious liberty advocacy organization awarded a group of residents in a Texas town this week for pushing back against a resident who attempted to have a Nativity scene outside their local courthouse removed.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty announced Tuesday that the citizens of Sweetwater were the recipients of its inaugural “Tiny Tim Toast” award for showing up in droves to express their opposition to taking down the Nativity scene outside the Nolan County Courthouse.
Sweetwater is a town of approximately 10,000 people about 40 miles west of Abilene.
Last week, there was standing room only when the Nolan County Commissioners Court held a public forum regarding a call from Carolyn Anne Frawley to take down the Nativity, according to CBS affiliate KTAB.
Frawley penned a letter to the editor of the local newspaper, the Sweetwater Reporter, expressing her opposition to the Nativity display on government property, citing the separation of church and state.
Faraway notably left “Christian” uncapitalized in her letter, despite capitalizing “Jewish,” “Muslim,” “atheist” and “freethinkers.”
“Not all residents of Nolan County are of one religion,” Faraway wrote in part. “There are people who are Jewish and maybe even Muslim and of course Atheist. Yes, we do exist even though many christians choose to ignore or use intimidation to keep Freethinkers whispering instead of speaking out.”
“The Obvious christian law display must be removed from our public property. The Nolan County Courthouse is a representative and place for government business for ALL Nolan County residents, not just christians,” she added.
Faraway also attended the meeting on Dec. 9, but was the only one who spoke out in opposition to the display, according to CBS affiliate KTXS.
“The religious display should be removed from the Nolan County courthouse lawn,” Frawley said. “It is a taxpayer-supported public building where county and city business is conducted. It is not a church and the display is an over-Christian display.”
KTXS noted that eight other people spoke in support of the Nativity display, and that authorities took no action on the issue, which allowed the display to remain outside the courthouse.
Mark Rienzi, who serves as president and CEO of Becket, praised the solidarity of Sweetwater residents who showed up in support of their Nativity scene.
“When the humbug spirit tried to snuff out Sweetwater’s cherished Nativity scene, the locals stood their ground with unshakable resolve,” Rienzi said in a statement provided to The Christian Post. “God bless them for the courage they showed in the face of adversity — it should be an inspiration to all those who wish to keep the Christmas and Hanukkah season sacred.”
The “Tiny Tim Toast” award — named after the boy in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol — took the place of Becket’s annual “Ebenezer Award,” which for 23 years highlighted “the most outrageous offenders of the holidays,” according to its website.
This year, the group decided instead to highlight “an individual or group who inspires hope and perseverance in the face of adversity during the Christmas and Hanukkah season.”
“Every Christmas and Hanukkah season, there are some bureaucrats and activists who seek to shut out the lights on religious displays and expression,” Rienzi said. “This year, Becket is happy to raise a hearty toast to all those who stood firm against these efforts, unwavering in defending faith’s rightful place in the public square. Here’s to you, the citizens of Sweetwater, Texas, for keeping the faith.”
According to Becket’s 2024 Religious Freedom Index, 62% of Americans believe that people of faith are crucial to solving the problems facing the United States.

Maha Kumbh’s spiritual, scientific, and economic significance, as well as its social equality – HinduPost

We’re aiming to add 2,500 contributions in the next 30 days, to help keep HinduPost free.
In a world characterized by the frenetic pace of modernity, few events possess the capacity to unite millions in the quest for a purpose greater than themselves. The Maha Kumbh Mela, a revered pilgrimage occurring four times over a span of 12 years, exemplifies this phenomenon. Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful assembly globally, attracts millions of pilgrims who immerse themselves in sacred rivers to purify their sins and achieve spiritual liberation. As pilgrims prepare for their journey to Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, they will partake in a series of spiritual rituals and embark on a journey that transcends physical, cultural, and spiritual boundaries.
There is a narrative behind every Hindu festive and ritual. They are honored with zeal and excitement, as well as a solid scientific, historical, and philosophical foundation. All of these characteristics combine to provide a reason to celebrate a festival or perform a ritual. These rituals are intended to guide a person down a spiritual road where they can achieve perfect psychological equilibrium, renewal, and relaxation.
Here are some scientific elements of the Mahakumbh Mela:
The Maha Kumbh Mela is a festival that incorporates science, astrology, and spirituality. The dates of the Maha Kumbha are calculated using scientific techniques, the majority of which utilize planetary placements. When the planet Brihaspati (Jupiter) enters the astrological sign Vrishabha (Taurus), it corresponds with Surya (Sun) and Chandra (Moon) entering Makara (Capricorn). These changes affect the water and air, resulting in a completely positive atmosphere in the holy city of Prayagraj. Simply being there at that sacred site and taking a holy dip in the Ganges can spiritually enlighten a soul, reducing physical and mental stress.
Astrology: The celebration takes place when the sun, moon, and Jupiter are in certain positions. River confluences: The event takes place at river confluences where unique forces are thought to act at specific periods in the solar cycle. Water: The event is thought to benefit the body (72% water) by connecting with the energy churning of the waterways. The Maha Kumbh Mela is a massive gathering of people from all across India who come to wash in the sacred Ganges River. The event is filled with information and features numerous rituals and cultural activities.
The Kumbh Mela is not only the world’s largest human gathering, but also one of the most spiritually profound, attracting millions of devotees, saints, and seekers from all over the world. The next Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people to reconnect with their spiritual essence, cleanse their soul, and embark on a sacred journey that has been practiced for millennia.
To summarize, the positions of many planets have an effect on our planet’s water and air. At certain planetary positions, the positive energy levels of a specific location during a specific time rise to a high, creating an ideal environment for spiritual growth and awakening.
Economic importance of Kumbh Mela
The Prime Minister recently unveiled 167 development projects totaling ₹5,500 crore in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to prepare for the Maha Kumbh 2025. Sah’AI’yak, a multilingual AI-powered chatbot, was introduced to help devotees in 11 Indian languages. The Mahakumbh, which covers around 4,000 hectares, is expected to attract 40-45 crore pilgrims, making it the world’s largest religious gathering. KV Raju, economic advisor to the Uttar Pradesh government, claims that with a projected 45 crore pilgrims, the Mahakumbh might produce at least Rs 2 lakh crore.
Former IAS official Avnish Awasthi, who advises the Chief Minister, projected that if each pilgrim spends 8,000 rupees, overall economic activity might exceed 3.2 lakh crore rupees, highlighting the event’s colossal financial significance. Senior tourism experts feel that the Mela’s infrastructure and global exposure will benefit tourism for many years to come. The upgraded amenities and connectivity will make a lasting impact on the region.
According to an earlier CII report, the last such Maha Kumbh in 2013 earned total revenues of Rs 12,000 crore, which included infrastructure improvements to airports and hotels, while the Kumbh Mela in 2019 garnered total revenues of Rs 1.2 lakh crore. Although the Kumbh Mela is spiritual and religious in nature, the economic activities related with it employed over six lakh people in 2019 across a variety of sectors, according to the CII.
The Yogi government is making substantial efforts to improve the state’s tourism economy, with the approaching Maha Kumbh playing an important role in this initiative. It is expected that approximately 45,000 families will benefit from direct or indirect job possibilities related to this magnificent event and lakhs of people across a variety of sectors.
Tracing History: A Journey across Time
The Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage, is held four times every twelve years in four separate locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Kumbh Mela 2025 will take place at Prayagraj, where the sacred rivers Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati meet at the Sangam. The Kumbh Mela has thousands of years of history, with early allusions dating back to the Maurya and Gupta periods (4th century BCE to 6th century CE). The early meetings, albeit not as huge as the present Kumbh Mela, attracted pilgrims from all around the Indian subcontinent. The Mela’s importance expanded with the emergence of Hindutva, with emperors such as the Guptas elevating it to the status of a venerated religious gathering.
The Kumbh Mela was supported by a number of royal dynasties during the medieval period, notably the Chola and Vijayanagar Empires. In the nineteenth century, figures such as British colonial administrator James Prinsep documented the Kumbh Mela, noting its ritualistic rituals, massive congregations, and socio-religious dynamics at play. These testimonies provided vital insights into the Kumbh’s evolution and durability over time. The Maha Kumbh Mela took on even greater significance after independence, representing national unity and India’s rich cultural legacy. The Kumbh Mela, recognized by UNESCO in 2017 as an intangible cultural property of mankind, is a witness to the survival and adaptation of traditional traditions in the face of modernism.
Unity in Diversity:
The Maha Kumbh brings together millions of people from many castes, creeds, and walks of life, fostering social harmony and cultural exchange. The Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025 is more than just a gathering; it is a journey towards oneself. Beyond rituals and symbolic deeds, it allows pilgrims to engage in inner thought and deepen their connection with the holy. In a world dominated by the demands of modern life, the Maha Kumbh Mela stands out as a symbol of togetherness, purity, and enlightenment. This eternal trip serves as a strong reminder that, despite humanity’s diverse pathways, we are fundamentally united—a common quest for peace, self-realization, and an unwavering regard for the sacred.
Conclusion
Every spiritual or religious activity in Sanatan dharm has a strong connection to human and societal upliftment, which promotes social harmony while also reminding us that Sanatan dharm does not believe in caste discrimination, thereby boosting millions economically. The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 has the potential to not only enrich spiritual lives, but also to accelerate long-term economic growth in Uttar Pradesh. With its vast size and the jobs it will generate, the event aims to leave a lasting legacy, transforming the state into a global economic hub. The event’s economic impact is not just immediate, but it will continue to stimulate tourism, infrastructure, and job creation in the region for many years.

Latest from Mormon Land: How Joseph Smith made headlines in 2024 – Salt Lake Tribune

The Mormon Land newsletter is The Salt Lake Tribune’s weekly highlight reel of news in and about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Join us on Patreon and receive the full newsletter, podcast transcripts and access to all of our religion content. How Joseph Smith made headlines in 2024
With the coming Monday marking the 219th anniversary of Joseph Smith’s birth in Sharon, Vermont, it’s time once again to remind readers and listeners of stories and podcasts we produced this year about a church founder who continues to make headlines:
• In the wake of assassination attempts on Donald Trump, we noted that Smith became the first U.S. presidential candidate ever to be slain during a White House campaign when a mob gunned down the 38-year-old religious leader June 27, 1844, at a jail in Carthage, Illinois.
• On the day he died, he penned a missive to wife Emma. A new exhibit at the Church History Museum in downtown Salt Lake City allowed visitors to view that last letter.
(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Church founder Joseph Smith's letter to wife Emma dated the day of his death on June 27, 1844.
• A church history professor at Brigham Young University drew parallels between today’s political climate and that of Smith’s era.
• Nearly 200 years after publication of the Book of Mormon, the seer stone church historians say Smith used to translate — at least in part — the faith’s signature scripture became the subject of a current debate in, of all places, a federal courtroom.
• Highly regarded scholarly works have documented that Smith had at least 33 wives, and historians widely accept that the church leader preached, albeit privately, and practiced plural marriage. But so-called polygamy deniers persist. This “Mormon Land” podcast explored what the evidence really shows.
Joseph Smith, top left, and some of his wives, clockwise from top middle: Emma Hale Smith; Eliza R. Snow; Martha McBride (Knight Smith Kimball); Marinda Nancy Johnson (Hyde Smith); and Zina Diantha Huntington Jacobs (Smith Young).
• A new book examined Smith’s uncanonized revelations that few members know about, including a prophecy on war and teachings about God’s name.
(The Salt Lake Tribune; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Church President Russell M. Nelson, center, surrounded by newly constructed temples in Utah, Wyoming and Argentina.
As the church undertakes a historic temple-building blitz, Exponent II blogger Candice Wendt offers a wish list for changes she would like to see in the faith’s most sacred spaces.
She imagines, for instance, temples that:
• Are “more community-oriented,” suggesting a return of cafeterias for shared meals inside the structures.
• Feature “multiple Adams and Eves from many racial and ethnic backgrounds, speaking many languages.”
• Represent the faith’s belief in Heavenly Mother “through both art and in the presentation.”
Open their doors to the general public.
• No longer require members to pay tithing to participate in temple rituals.
(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Painting depicts the birth of Jesus.
Christians sing the holiday hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” but was Jesus really born there? Would a pregnant Mary have ridden on a donkey? And who were the Magi?
Bible scholar and social media star Dan McClellan sheds light on what the Gospels say, what historical records show, and what Luke, frankly, invented.
Listen to the podcast.
Riffing off the enormous popularity of the Hulu reality TV show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” a Washington Post article declares 2024 the “year of Mormon women.”
“At a time when conservative politics, personalities and media are surging in popularity,” the piece proclaims, “women ‘Saints’ aren’t just mirroring pop culture, they are, perhaps for the first time, at the forefront of it.”
(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Couples wait to be legally married in Kananga, the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Nov. 30, 2024.
Latter-day Saints united recently with government officials and interfaith leaders as they continued to push for legal marriages in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the traditional practice of the bride’s family demanding a dowry, or “bride price,” has sometimes made such unions unaffordable for couples.
“Our constitution acknowledges family as a natural foundation of the human community,” a provincial governor said in a news release. “I hereby commit to make the process of civil marriage to be smooth and easy.”
The event featured civil weddings of 53 Latter-day Saint couples.
• $eminary? The church has billions of dollars, so why are some instructors paying for their own ink and printer paper?
• Brigham Young has a new companion. A statue of Martha Hughes Cannon — a Latter-day Saint physician, suffragist and public health trailblazer from Utah who became the nation’s first woman elected to a state Senate — has joined a sculpture of the pioneer prophet in the U.S. Capitol.
(Mark Schiefelbein | AP) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, center left, and Arline Arnold Brady, center right, the great-granddaughter of Martha Hughes Cannon of Utah, join others in unveiling a statue of Cannon during a ceremony on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, in Washington.
• A Latter-day Saint lawyer has been selected to lead a group with huge sway over Donald Trump’s judicial nominees.
• Tribune guest columnist Eli McCann recalls an unremarkable yet unforgettable, inexpensive yet priceless Christmas gift.
• Is it Spotify Wrapped or Spotify Warped? Tribune guest columnist Rebbie Brassfield reflects on her dance with naughty lyrics.
• One’s a Hugh Grant thriller, one’s a hot-mess reality show — and both center on stereotypes about Latter-day Saint women.
