The eighth edition of SOJOM 2025, an international symposium On Joining Of Materials, got under way at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) campus here on Thursday.
Inaugurating the symposium, Joe Mohan, Director, Reactor Projects Group and Head, Special Reactor Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, said one had to be a complete engineer to be an expert in welding techniques.
Given the growing demand for clean energy and increasing intricacies in fabrication of various power plant components, there was a need to devise ways to compress schedules, optimise processes, widen applications of robotics, and use AI tools, he said.
S. Prabhakar, Executive Director, BHEL Tiruchi Complex, said the symposium offered a strategic platform to drive innovation, collaboration, and technological excellence in welding and joining. The outcome of the symposium would help BHEL in critical issues and achieve its targets, Mr. Prabhakar said and called upon the participants to develop strong industry-academia networks in India and abroad to enable technology transfer and joint research projects, training and innovation in welding technologies.
S.M. Mahajan, President, Asian Welding Federation, and Joel Andersson, Professor, University West, Sweden, spoke.
P.S. Ganesh, General Manager, Operations, BHEL, released a souvenir.
Over 500 participants, including researchers, industry experts, technologists, academicians, and representatives of various agencies were attending the three-day event organised by the Welding Research Institute of BHEL, Tiruchi, in collaboration with the Indian Welding Society (IWS) Southern Zone.  An expo on welding and allied processes was organised as part of the event.
SOJOM, a premier event dedicated to welding, joining, and allied processes, has been playing an important role in shaping India’s welding research and industrial applications for over three decades by providing a platform for researchers, industry experts, and technologists to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations. and discuss solutions for challenges in joining materials, said a BHEL press release.
