President Donald Trump pledged Nov. 5 that the U.S. stands “ready, willing, and able to save” Christians in countries where they are being slaughtered.
“We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world. This is not going to happen,” Trump said in a video message from the White House. “The killing of Christians is not going to happen.”

Trump said Christians in Nigeria face especially severe persecution as Islamist extremists continue to massacre thousands for their faith.
“Thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he said of Nigeria. “I am hereby making Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). That’s a legal definition.”
Citing data from the Open Doors 2025 World Watch List, Trump said 4,476 Christians were killed worldwide last year. Roughly 3,100 of those murdered were in Nigeria.
Trump directed Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., and House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole, R-Okla., to “immediately look into this matter” and report back right away, stressing that America “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening” in Nigeria and other countries.
As CatholicVote previously reported, the Open Doors list found that more than 280 million Christians worldwide (roughly 1 in 7) face high levels of discrimination and violence for their faith.
North Korea remains the most dangerous country for Christians, while Nigeria is ranked seventh. The report noted that the faithful in Pakistan, Syria, Myanmar, and India also continue to face violence, imprisonment, and displacement.
Moore, a Catholic, thanked Trump in an X post for his “incredible leadership in defending persecuted Christians, especially in Nigeria.”
“Your bold and decisive action to protect our brothers and sisters in Christ will save thousands of lives,” Moore said in the post. “I am on it and will have more for you soon.”

Trump’s remarks build on earlier statements warning Nigeria’s government to halt the violence or face possible U.S. action. On Nov. 1, Trump said he had instructed the Department of War to “prepare for possible action” should the killings persist — one day after announcing the plan to place Nigeria on the CPC list.
