It was a successful homecoming for Lafayette Christian School on Friday night as the Cougars dominated Harvester Christian 44-0. There was little hope for the Hawks, who were physically outmatched from the outset.
A 49-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Jeffcoat on the opening possession of the and would set the tone for the rest of the game. The Cougars unveiled a new power-run formation to start the game, and it was extremely effective against the overmatched Harvester defense.
“I knew the old heads would like that one,” LCS coach Jarred Pike said, chuckling. “I loved it, I absolutely loved it.”
Lafayette Christian reverted to its standard offensive approach on the second drive, and it was more of the same as the Cougars marched right down the field. Liam Carroll found the end zone from two yards out to double the lead.
The Cougars would score once more before the end of the first quarter when Logan Childree found Jonathan Ross for a 38-yard touchdown. The impressive CLS defense forced a turnover on downs to give the offense the ball back. The Cougars would strike less than 30 seconds into the second quarter when Childree connected with Ross for their second touchdown of the game, this one from 25 yards out.
“Logan is really developing and has a good arm,” Pike said. “Jonathan has been our no.1 receiver the last couple of years, so there is no surprise there, but their connection is really starting to get going.”
Childree is in his first season as the team’s starting quarterback.
The special teams would get in on the scoring when Johnathan May jumped on a botched snap in the end zone on the ensuing possession for Harvester to put the home team up 34-0.
May was just getting started on the second quarter as his 19-yard rushing touchdown put the Cougars up 41-0 on the eve of halftime.
“He played offensive line for us last year, but we have him at running back this year, and he’s a tough kid,” Pike said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid. He runs hard every time he touches the ball.”
Lafayette Christian was driving to end the first half, but decided to show some mercy and didn’t score again before the break.
The Cougar defense did not allow a single first down in the first half. Harverster would eventually get one in the third quarter against the backups of Lafayette Christian, but the drive would end when Connor Hudson intercepted a pass.
Cody Batistini also interpreted a pass in the second half, setting up the final score of the game, a 38-yard field goal from Bradley Miller.
The Cougar defense has been on a tear the last three weeks, allowing zero points in all three games. This is the first time in program history that the team has accomplished that feat.
“We have a bunch of guys that are flying to the ball and making tackles,” Pike said. “Everybody is on a mission to make plays on defense.”
Lafayette Christian has won five games in a row since dropping its season opener to Unity to move to 5-1 on the season. During that five-game winning streak, the Cougars are outscoring opponents 240-26.
The Cougars will travel to take on Central Christian next Friday as they look to make it six consecutive wins.
