Nigerian President Bola Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency Wednesday after President Donald Trump put pressure on Tinubu due to the mass kidnappings and murders of Christians in the region.
The declaration also included an order for the country’s armed forces to increase recruitment numbers, and it called on police to recruit 20,000 more officers, making the total 50,000. (RELATED: Trump Vows To End Third World Migration After Deadly National Guard Shooting)
“My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas,” the order said. “The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.”
This will be accomplished by utilizing the National Youth Service Corps as training depots, and the order directs officers away from VIP guard duties so they can focus on “security-challenged areas.” Nigeria’s government is also deploying trained forest guard members to “flush out the terrorists and bandits lurking in our forests.”
“There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” the declaration continued.
“There must be no compromise, no collusion and no negligence. The Nigerian people are counting on you, and this administration will provide the support you need to succeed,” the statement added.
Twenty-five schoolgirls were abducted from a Nigerian boarding school in November, and 50 children taken from a Catholic school escaped several days later.
“Let me take this moment to commend our security agencies for working together to secure the release of the 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the 38 worshippers in Kwara State,” Tinubu said. “We will continue to sustain the efforts to rescue the remaining students of Catholic School in Niger State and other Nigerians still being held hostage.”
He also advised mosques and churches to seek police and security protection when they gather for prayer.
Some claim these attacks are predominantly perpetrated by radical Islamists and are targeted at Christians or moderate Muslims.
“Nigeria is ground zero, the focal point of the most brutal and murderous anti-Christian persecution in the world today,” Republican New Jersey Rep. and House Subcommittee on Africa Chairman Chris Smith stated during a November hearing.
Trump also issued a late October statement designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” Trump said.
Trump also referenced numbers gathered by Open Doors, which reported that at least 3,100 Christians have been killed in Nigeria — a large portion of the estimated 4,476 Christians murdered worldwide, according to their 2025 dataset.
Nigeria’s new CPC status opens up a variety of economic and diplomatic tools the U.S. can use against the country until it gets the conflict under control.
Days after Nigeria’s new status, Trump issued a warning on Truth Social.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” the post stated.
He continued by instructing the Department of War to prepare for possible action, adding that if the U.S. does attack, it must be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”
“WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!” the statement concluded.
While Tinubu does not mention Trump, his threats or the allegations that victims are targeted because of their Christian faith, the declaration shows Tinubu is starting to take the issue head-on. (RELATED: Cities Wage War On Churches Feeding The Homeless Just In Time For Thanksgiving)
“Our administration will continue to guarantee peaceful coexistence and preserve our union,” Tinubu said. “I urge all Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant. Report suspicious activities. Cooperate with security agencies. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win.”
