“The Deliverance” would have worked just fine if it had functioned solely as a domestic drama infused with the thorny, real-world issues of addiction, poverty and racism.
This is territory director Lee Daniels knows well, having given us a searing exploration of these subjects with his Academy Award-winning 2009 film “Precious.” Daniels made his name as a filmmaker with an affinity for difficult characters and raw relationships, as we’ve also seen in “The Paperboy” and “The United States vs. Billie Holliday.” And he’s amassed an impressive cast here, including Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and “Precious” Oscar winner Mo’Nique.
But he’s taken all that promise and tacked a standard horror story about demonic possession onto it. He’s trying to slam two different movies together, with uneven and increasing unconvincing results. Once “The Deliverance” turns into a full-tilt genre movie, it offers the kinds of scares we’ve seen countless times before: kids skittering up walls and lingering in the air, graphically vile invective spewing from the mouths of babes, and the crack-crack-crack of evil contorting bodies in unnatural positions.
Trouble is, “The Deliverance” is far more effective when Day’s single-mom character confronts her metaphorical demons, rather than her literal ones.
The film is inspired by the case of Latoya Ammons, who moved with her family into a Gary, Indiana, rental home in 2011. Soon, she began noticing strange occurrences and disturbing behavior from her children. Eventually, a priest conducted an exorcism, and the house was demolished.
Here, screenwriters David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum have taken that core notion and moved it to the unstable home of Day’s struggling mother, Ebony, in working-class Pittsburgh. Day has an immediacy to her screen presence that can be startling, a volatility that makes her fearsome even before anything starts going bump in the basement. Raising three kids–teenagers Nate (Caleb McLaughlin) and Shante (Demi Singleton) and their younger brother, Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins)–while also tending to her own mother (Close), who’s suffering from cancer, would be enough responsibility for one person to handle alone. But Ebony is also an alcoholic fighting a constant battle to stay sober. Dealing with her mother, Alberta, offers its own set of challenges–and Close, chain smoking in a collection of flashy wigs and cold-shoulder tops, gives a brash performance that makes her Mamaw from “Hillbilly Elegy” look demure and mindful.
This time, Mo’Nique is the one investigating reports of abuse and neglect in the home as an agent of Child Protective Services, and that’s before the kids start acting erratically in school. A scene in which Ebony delivers a swift backhand to her youngest child for talking back at the dinner table reveals that such concern is warranted. Mo’Nique brings a world-weariness to the role but also a feeling of genuine concern. Similarly, Ellis-Taylor offers warmth and strength as an apostle–don’t call her an exorcist–who might just be the family’s salvation. But while Ellis-Taylor’s graceful presence is always extremely welcome, the supernatural element of the story that her character ushers in marks the point at which the film starts to decline.
It’s not that “The Deliverance” becomes too unsettling; quite the contrary, once it’s obviously about a demon feasting on Ebony’s family, it feels too safe. We’ve seen these images and heard these words before. What’s frustrating is that Daniels is a filmmaker known for leaning into the lurid, for milking the melodrama. He takes risks, for better and for worse, and that’s exciting. For a while, Ebony is an unreliable conduit into this scenario, so it’s intriguingly unclear as to what’s happening in a drunken haze and what’s a legitimate threat.
But once the film shifts into a different gear, Daniels can’t quite match the turbulent intensity he established earlier. There’s nothing in the iffy visual effects that’s as frightening as the real-world threats these kids face just getting through the day. And given the mish-mash of tones at play, it’s sadly fitting that the whole thing ends on an awkward note of rushed uplift.
On Netflix now.

US and India to Promote Reciprocal Investments in AI Technology – PYMNTS.com
The United States and India plan to build new collaboration around artificial intelligence (AI) via investments and protections involving the technology.
These efforts were among several commitments to strengthen a strategic technology partnership between the countries following a meeting in New Delhi, the White House said in a Monday (Jan. 6) fact sheet.
At the Monday event, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the fact sheet.
Regarding AI, the officials said the countries will develop a government-to-government framework for promoting reciprocal investments in AI technology and aligning protections around the diffusion of that technology, the fact sheet said.
In addition, the U.S. and India will strengthen their cooperation around the national security applications of AI and the “safe, secure and trustworthy” development of the technology, per the fact sheet.
Sullivan and Doval have regularly engaged and have promoted concrete initiatives around AI and other technologies since the May 2022 launch of the India-U.S. Initiative on Critical and Emergency Technologies (iCET), according to a readout of the meeting issued Monday by the White House.
Together with AI, the two countries announced new collaboration in the fields of space technology, defense innovation, industrial cooperation, clean energy, critical minerals and semiconductors, per the fact sheet.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a press release saying that Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to greater cooperation between the two countries.
The release also noted significant advancement in the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership over the past four years in several areas, including AI.
It was reported in June that Amazon and Microsoft are among the Big Tech companies investing billions in India’s artificial intelligence efforts.
Microsoft has pledged around $3.7 billion to the southern Indian state of Telangana, where it will build data centers, while Amazon plans to invest around $12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by the end of the decade.
In March, it was reported that India’s IT ministry said AI tools that are “unreliable” or untested must get the government’s go-ahead before release.
We’re always on the lookout for opportunities to partner with innovators and disruptors.

As temps drop, here's how to deal with cold-stunned iguanas falling from trees – NBC Miami
With temperatures expected to drop in South Florida by Wednesday morning, so will the iguanas. As seen in past cold spells, when temperatures dip below 50 degrees, iguanas seemingly freeze in place.
Michael Ronquillo, a professional iguana remover, says this is due to their metabolism slowing down. The cold-blooded reptiles can’t function regularly in cold weather.

“They climb the trees to go to sleep but once they’re up there, they get so cold that they lose grip on where they’re at and they start falling from the trees,” Ronquillo said.
For the last five years, Ronquillo has owned and operated the Humane Iguana Control company, which specializes in preventative and removal services. Ronquillo says he’s removed iguanas as big as 6 feet long and weighing 25 pounds. He gets so many calls, he created his own expert iguana control guide for 2025.
Get local news you need to know to start your day with NBC 6’s News Headlines newsletter.
“Imagine, you come here early in the morning to walk your pets and you’re not aware there are iguanas up there. They can fall on you, on roofs, on cars,” Ronquillo said. “A six-foot iguana, 25 pounds… if it falls on you, you’re going to feel it.”
With calls expected to increase to up to 30 per day, Ronquillo says residents who want to take preventative measures should start with a tree wrapping service.
“When you wrap this around your tree, it is chest high. What happens is when the iguana climbs up, they can’t because it’s so slippery, they can’t grip it,” Ronquillo said.
He also suggests trimming back trees away from your property to prevent iguanas from falling into your pool or on your roof.
If you come across an iguana, he says you should call a professional to remove it unless you have experience. But do not bring it into your home. As soon as it warms up, it will begin to move normally again.
“If they are cornered, they will defend themselves. They will try to tail-whip you. They can whip their tales at 30 mph,” Ronquillo said. “They have very sharp teeth, very sharp nails, so if you don’t have experience, you should not attempt to grab them.”

The new norm
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set to be a very robust and in-depth sandbox RPG, and so it’s no huge surprise to see that it boasts a fairly big file size.
As per the ever-reliable PlayStation Game Size on X, Henry’s sophomore adventure will take up 84GB of your PS5’s storage space. We’ve seen heavier demands, of course, but it’s still a sizeable requirement.
If you’re the owner of a shiny new PS5 Pro, this file size probably won’t cause any issues thanks to that roomy 2TB drive. But if you’re on the base console — and you haven’t upgraded your storage over the years — then this is the kind of game that may force a deletion or two.
Special Deliverance
Most bigger budget PS5 titles tend to eat up around 50-80GB these days, but did you see Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 staking a claim on 84GB of your storage? Tell us what you’re deleting in the comments section below.

A little too much, some might say.

In fact, 84GB is not that bad. It is to be expected as games get more complicated.
For comparison, Hogwarts Legacy is 81GB, Black Myth WuKong is 108GB, and Horizon Forbidden West is 130GB.
I have 21 PS5 games in my library. They take up a total of 1.22TB on my M2 SSD storage.
Hopefully the beginning is not as brutal as the first.
Yeah so glad I upgraded to pro that 2tb storage is so so nice
I really wanted to like the first one, it's right up my alley , but I found it a buggy broken mess with crappy textures and poorly optimised for consoles , 20 fps sometimes ,hopefully they've put more effort into the console versions and took advantage of the pro.
Could be far worse but either way i have more then enough space for it.
So delete a game before I download. Cool. I delete games as soon as I’ve finished them anyway.
@Bunchesopuppies Honestly i found the beginning fine as its not too combat focused and is pretty scripted, its when you're expected to learn the combat that the difficulty quickly sets in.
As long as it’s not a ridiculously massive storage eater like those Call of duty games 👀
@lazarus11
Odd, not my experience at all. It was solid, few bugs, with minimal “jank”, which surprised me at the time as I’d never heard of the studio. It’s one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had, so I am definitely hyped to see what they can do with the sequel.
84gb sounds quite tame.
Was expecting you to be saying 120+ or something
That's really not that bad. Unless a person regularly plays COD, GTA, and 2k (in which case where would they find the time?) there's a decent amount of space on the base console. You either don't have the time/money/interest to play enough games regularly to fill up a hard drive, or you've expanded your storage/plan to. 80 is on the larger side, but triple digit games are the real monsters.

Gulfstream, FHBPA Reach Legislation Change Agreement – BloodHorse.com
Racing at Gulfstream Park
Edited Press Release
1/ST's Gulfstream Park and the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association have reached an agreement to support changes to Chapter 550 of the existing state legislation that will enable Gulfstream Park's live racing schedule to become independent of the venue's pari-mutuel license.
The basis for the agreement, unique and designed to address the needs of Florida and consistent with similar gaming entities in the region, allows 1/ST to pursue necessary opportunities for development at Gulfstream Park. The agreement ensures purse revenues are unaffected and provides for additional contributions by Gulfstream Park to horsemen's workers' compensation premiums and meaningful increases to Thoroughbred aftercare efforts in Florida.
House Bill 105 was filed Jan. 6.
"As a supporter of the Thoroughbred horse racing industry, I'm proud to sponsor House Bill 105," said representative Adam Anderson. "Gulfstream Park and the horse racing industry are integral to our state's economy and cultural heritage. Gulfstream Park is not just a premier destination for racing; it's a vital part of its local community, agriculture business, and state economy, providing jobs and driving tourism. Florida's horse racing industry is a symbol of excellence and tradition, and I will continue to advocate for policies that ensure its growth and success, securing its future in Florida for generations to come."
Gulfstream Park is one of the top racing destinations in North America and the jewel of Florida's Thoroughbred racing industry. It is expected to run more than 200 live race days in 2025. It houses 1,500+ horses at Gulfstream Park, 1,400 horses at Palms Meadows Training Center, and supports the interests of nearly 6,000 Florida horse owners and trainers. It is the only pari-mutuel facility in North America with three racing surfaces—dirt, turf, and all-weather Tapeta—and is home to the Pegasus World Cup (G1), Thoroughbred racing's premier luxury and lifestyle event. Gulfstream Park is an entertainment destination center that combines live horse racing and wagering with a casino, live shows, and lifestyle-oriented recreation and leisure activities in the Gulfstream Park Village.

"We look forward to the upcoming legislative consideration process and to working in collaboration with Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and other stakeholders to advocate for the passage of the statutory amendments to Chapter 550 that will provide the necessary foundation to support an economically sensible plan to protect year-round racing at Gulfstream Park," said 1/ST president of racing Stephen Screnci.
"The Florida Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association and 1/ST share an understanding of the issues critical to and facing year-round Thoroughbred racing at Gulfstream Park, and are committed to the same outcome," said FHBPA executive director Herb Oster. "By supporting the statutory amendments to Chapter 550 to enable Gulfstream Park's live racing schedule to become independent of the venue's pari-mutuel license, we are securing a sustainable future for horsemen in Florida that sensibly addresses the challenging economic realities facing the industry."

Establishing A Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Could Supercharge the US Dollar – Eye On Annapolis
Early 2024, Cynthia Lummis, the junior United States senator from Wyoming since 2021, advanced the Boosting Innovation, Technology, and Competitiveness through Optimized Investment Nationwide Act. This act entails establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve to cope with unexpected events. The aim is to acquire 1,000,000 BTC over a five-year period that the government must hold onto for twenty years. Satoshi Action Fund’s Dennis Porter confirms 11 states and two nations will introduce the strategic Bitcoin reserve legislation in due time.
Thus far, the Federal Reserve has focused on short-term securities, like Treasury bills and notes, yet quantitative easing has encouraged the most powerful economic institution in the US to purchase mortgage securities and commercial paper. Bitcoin can be used to preserve value, just like gold, making an undisputed champion in global trade, dominating transactions across borders. Donald Trump, who has won the presidency, wants to maintain the current reserves held by the government and even continue to buy Bitcoin, which will then be transferred to the Treasury, placing restrictions on potential future sales.
Traditional investors view Bitcoin as a safe haven asset, so they expect it to retain or even gain value during intervals of economic uncertainty and market turbulence due to its revolutionary approach to wealth storage. The cryptocurrency is on par with gold: both are scarce, decentralized and have been used as a store of value throughout time. Bitcoin is sometimes called digital gold.
Bitcoin isn’t an infinite resource, meaning no new coins will be released after it reaches the limit of 21 million, and this built-in scarcity contributes to its value. The decision to buy depends on your individual perspective and goals. You can use the currencies or the existing crypto assets in your account to buy Bitcoin in just a few taps and even set up recurring buys to automate the process, choosing the frequency. If you learn the basics, you’ll be on the road to investing in no time, so if you’re a total newbie, develop a deeper and more meaningful comprehension of the subject.
The cryptocurrency market is slowly but surely maturing, with digital assets making their way into regulatory frameworks. The US Securities and Exchange Commission approved 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs this year, simplifying investment in the sector by providing investors exposure to the best asset in terms of performance. Institutional investors, endowments, hedge funds, and private corporations are now investing in Bitcoin.
Countless letters were sent to US senators, prompting them to co-sponsor and support the BITCOIN bill, which demonstrates interest is at a record level, most of it coming from individuals who already own cryptocurrency or have exposure to Bitcoin via an ETF. According to Lummis’s proposal, the US Central Bank should leverage existing funds to purchase Bitcoin, identical to its gold allocation.
The network effects, immutability, censorship resistance, capped supply, and decentralization make Bitcoin stand out from the crowd. It complements traditional currencies, such as the dollar, and offers an alternative means of exchange. One day, Bitcoin could replace the dollar entirely. Incorporating Bitcoin into the Federal Reserve’s asset allocation requires an elaborate legal framework that addresses the following areas:
Nations with more volatile currencies actively use Bitcoin and dollars, meaning it would be in the US’s best interest to take an active stake in the former further to consolidate its position as the world’s largest economy.
In Bitcoin’s case, the blockchain is decentralized, so no person or group can change the software that runs on the network. Decentralization presents an attractive solution to bureaucracy, insensitivity to public needs, public inaccessibility, and lack of accountability, to name but a few. Making Bitcoin a reserve asset challenges the established dogma, so it will fail to live up to its potential to create more economic freedom.
Bitcoin represents liberty, power, and independence from government constraint and control, and designating it as a strategic asset could lead to centralization, which means it could be more prone to failures or attacks on critical infrastructure points. Put simply, having the government print more US dollars to buy Bitcoin would make it pointless. If crypto assets are a lenient vehicle to invest, they must trade on their own, without government intervention. By making it an integral part of the US policy, Bitcoin could lose its core qualities, even if its value increases. As a strategic asset, it’s powerful, but the cryptocurrency must be thoroughly managed to ensure the desired outcomes.
The dollar is still a global superpower, enabling the United States to borrow money without difficulty and impose financial sanctions to maximize its economic impact. Bitcoin has considerable value apart from what’s reflected in its forever fluctuating market cap, so integrating it into reserve assets is not only an option but a necessity, ensuring protection against geopolitical and economic uncertainties. As more and more institutions vouch for Bitcoin, its ascension to major policy is a possibility.
The process of confirming new reserve assets is complex as it involves decision-making at the highest levels of government and financial institutions. The president doesn’t have authority over such matters. El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as a legal tender, integrating it into the national economy – regret or reward? You be the judge. In any case, mistakes are opportunities to grow and change.
