Back in 1962, Christianity Today heard from the first American to orbit the earth: astronaut and born-again Christian John Glenn.
From senior editorial project manager Mia Staub: For Christmas last year, my family got me a trip to the Austin Film Festival, and while I was there for vacation, I inevitably wrote an article about one of the movies I saw: Wake Up Dead Man.
The viewing experience was fascinating, which I get into in my review. But one of the parts I did not get to share in the review was that Rian Johnson, the mind behind the Knives Out movies, did a Q&A after. The first question in my mind after seeing the movie was whether Johnson is or was a Christian. Some of the details in the film were specific enough to believe someone who has read Scripture would know.
Johnson was in fact asked this by a Christian member of the audience, and his response was that he grew up evangelical but is no longer a believer. He did say that the thing that he loves about the church is its message to give mercy when people don’t deserve it. I chuckled in my seat, because that is the gospel. The very thing he longs for is the very thing Christ offers!
Wake Up Dead Man, along with The Phoenecian Scheme that I reviewed earlier this year, were encouraging to me in that both films engage with faith in a more lived-in way, rather than relying on tropes or stereotypes. They are a way to check the pulse of secular spaces. Both films are proof that people are asking questions about faith, so I pray that we as Christians are ready to receive and answer them when they come our way.
Did you know that younger generations are now attending church more regularly than older ones? And, they’re driving a Bible reading comeback? Research from Gloo and Barna confirms that Gen Z and Millennials are leading a church resurgence. If we want to engage these generations in meaningful ways, we’ll have to meet them where they are — online.

As we enter the holiday season, we consider how the places to which we belong shape us—and how we can be the face of welcome in a broken world. In this issue, you’ll read about how a monastery on Patmos offers quiet in a world of noise and, from Ann Voskamp, how God’s will is a place to find home. Read about modern missions terminology in our roundtable feature and about an astrophysicist’s thoughts on the Incarnation. Be sure to linger over Andy Olsen’s reported feature “An American Deportation” as we consider Christian responses to immigration policies. May we practice hospitality wherever we find ourselves.
