The Indonesian Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) for the first time in history will hold a joint Christmas celebration on December 20, 2025. Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar called this step a form of the Ministry of Religion’s commitment to maintaining diversity and strengthening religious harmony in Indonesia.
In his statement quoted from Republika, Nasaruddin emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony in the midst of the nation’s plurality.
“This is what we have to take care of. Indonesia is the most beautiful painting on earth. Don’t mess with God’s painting,” he said at the Ministry of Religion’s Office at the Sea Light: Christmas, Loving God, Harmony and Humanity Together event held by the Directorate General of Christian Guidance, Tuesday, November 25.
So far, Christmas celebrations in government circles have generally been held sectorally by Christians and Catholics. However, the Ministry of Religion as a state institution has never held a joint Christmas celebration. Therefore, Nasaruddin called this year’s implementation a historic momentum.
“Masak kementerian lain melakukan Natal bersama, Kementerian Agama enggak? Selama ini ada Natal Kristen, Natal Istiqlal, tapi Natal Kementerian Agama-nya tidak ada. Tahun ini kita akan membuat sejarah,” tegas Imam Besar Masjid Istiqlal tersebut.
According to him, the holding of this joint Christmas is a symbol that the Ministry of Religion is a big home for all religious people. He hopes that this step will be an example in building tolerance across faith.
In his remarks, Nasaruddin reiterated that harmony is the main requirement for the progress of a country. He gave an example of many rich countries who fail to enjoy their wealth because they are trapped in internal conflicts.
“Without harmony, it doesn’t mean anything,” he said.
The Minister of Religion is also grateful that Indonesia is still a relatively peaceful country, and according to him it cannot be separated from the role of the Ministry of Religion in maintaining religious harmony.
“The key word for bringing this nation together is the Ministry of Religion. That’s why I really ask, we at the Ministry of Religion must be united,” he said.
He emphasized that holding a joint Christmas was not aimed at uniforming the beliefs between religious believers, but a form of respect for tolerance and togetherness.

“Tolerance is clearly the definition. As long as we are consistent with this tolerance, there will be no problem. All religions justify tolerance, no religion rejects goodness,” said Nasaruddin.
With this step, the Ministry of Religion hopes that the momentum of Christmas can strengthen unity and become a space for dialogue and respect between religious believers in Indonesia.
