Numerous falsely accused Christians vindicated in India – The Alabama Baptist

Scores of Christians have been vindicated by India’s Supreme Court, which recognized that the judicial system was being used as a “tool of harassment of innocent persons.”

According to a 158-page judgment issued Oct. 17, a number of people in India’s Uttar Pradesh state who had been charged under anti-conversion laws were vindicated, Morning Star News reported.
Among them were Vijay Masih, pastor of Evangelical Church of India in Fatehpur; staff members from Broadwell Christian Hospital; and officials with Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences in Prayagraj, among others.
The false accusations of forced conversions began in April 2022, when a group of Hindu extremists locked themselves inside Masih’s church during a worship service. They called the police, claiming 90 Hindus had been forcibly converted to Christianity. 
Masih and 35 other Christians were arrested, and Masih was jailed 100 days.
In January 2023, four more police reports targeted 47 individuals for alleged forcible conversions. Some were from the previous group; five were ages 11 to 17; and nine others were jailed.
The advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom International provided legal support, Morning Star reported.
India is No. 11 on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of the 50 places most difficult to be a Christian.
Uganda’s constitution and laws allow for freedom of religion, including converting from one faith to another, but December was a deadly month for Christians there.
