Re “Racism in Jesus’ name?” Nov. 12: Letters to the editor writer Mike Howard left me scratching my head.
I reviewed Nov. 3 columnist Pranav Jani’s observations, and found no implication that Jesus was being portrayed by him as “a White racist.” Nor did I understand if Howard was talking about Hindus, Christians or whomever, with “they don’t have the right to bully others or to force their beliefs on the rest of us.”
Jani’s view, with the nauseating examples given, is that prejudice and racism exist toward those who don’t happen to identify as Christians; and that there is widespread sentiment that this country is a “Christian nation,” despite the Constitution’s Establishment Clause which quite intentionally forbids this.
He lamented that in his view, Kash Patel and Vivek Ramaswamy caved to the MAGA faction so as to grab power, and ignore the vitriol aimed at their Hindu/Indian identities.
The sad reality is that there are those who want to appeal to the nation’s largest voting block using theatrics like waving around a Bible for a photo shoot, bowing their heads in public as if praying and calling deportation “the Lord’s work.”
Religion, unfortunately, continues to be exploited by politicians and others as a means to an end.
