Lunch and Learn series on vision, heart, and sleep health – Alpena News

Mar 1, 2025
ALPENA — The Community Outreach Committee of MyMichigan Health Foundation’s Development Council serving Alpena will host three new Take Time for You Lunch and Learn programs this spring. Topics will feature area physicians speaking on vision, cardiovascular health, and sleep. The one-hour programs include lunch and will be held in the Medical Center’s Auditorium. The cost is $10 per session or $25 for the series of three programs.
The series starts at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19. Ophthalmologist Bob Currier, D.O., will kick off the series with Vision for Life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 12 million people 40 years and over in the U.S. suffer from vision impairment. It’s estimated that half of visual impairment and blindness can be prevented through early diagnosis and treatment. Attendees will learn what can be done to address some of the most common eye afflictions including glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts.
Then, at noon on Wednesday, March 26, Cardiologist Daniel Harber, D.O., and Cardiac Manager Renee Lamp, B.S.N., will host Cardio Compass. Despite heart disease being the leading cause of death in the U.S. for the past 100 years, more than half of adults are unaware of its prevalence. Heart disease is an umbrella term that includes various conditions such as blood vessel disease, irregular heartbeats, congenital heart defects, and more. Attendees will learn facts regarding heart health, other heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation, and more about the Medical Center’s cardiac services.
The series continues at noon on Wednesday, April 9, with Pulmonologist Daniel Maxwell, D.O., presenting Sleep Soundly, Live Well. Sleep apnea is a serious, even life-threatening, disease that causes sufferers to repeatedly stop and start breathing while asleep. Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to heart, kidney, and metabolic health complications. Attendees will learn more about this sleep disorder and its impact on day-to-day activities, as well as treatment options.
Pre-registration is required. Call 989-356-7351 or email molly.signs-schindler@mymichigan.org.
