What Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias’ love of wrestling taught him about building his brand in comedy – Los Angeles Times

Breaking News
In the pantheon of stand-up comedy’s living legends, few names carry more weight than Fluffy. Though Gabriel Iglesias found major success using the moniker that has stuck with him for the majority of his career, he wasn’t really a fan of it at first. “It made me think of a cat or pillows or comforters or cotton candy,” he said recently sitting in his 14,404-square-foot Signal Hill compound, where he stores his touring merch, rows of custom VW buses, Marvel collectibles and more. “But [the name] stuck.”
With his distinct style, business sense and comedy that’s been steadily consumed by the masses for over a quarter of a century, the comic has developed a fabulist folklore around his rise to fame akin to his favorite sport — professional wrestling. It’s no surprise that his latest Netflix special, “Legend of Fluffy,” out Tuesday, takes fans through a giant retrospective of his career grinding on stage while zooming in on certain aspects of life: dating as a newly single man, trying to age gracefully, and a robbery that happened at his former home in Long Beach. Through the ups and downs of life, one thing that’s helped him achieve the heights of selling out Dodger Stadium multiple times and cranking out tours and specials one after the next is his ability to stay persistent, continuing to build a brand and always having a story to tell.
Can you tell us about the situation with coming up with the title of your new Netflix special?
The title of the special was supposed to be “Hard Rock Fluffy” because I shot the special at the Hard Rock Hotel [in Miami] and everybody was on board with it, and then we get a call from Netflix who said there’s money to be made on this and you can’t be promoting other brands. They didn’t like the fact that I was promoting Hard Rock on Netflix, and they’re like, “well, if something like that’s gonna happen there needs to be compensation for it.” I’m like, “well, it’s cool because I’m there and I play the Hard Rock so it helps me out” but they’re like, “yeah, no, can’t do it,” so then to just to be a jerk I was like what about “Rock Hard Fluffy”? You know, to try to open up the audience a little, but no, they didn’t go with that either so we had a lot of back and forth. They gave me about eight different titles but they sucked. Finally we landed on “Legend of Fluffy” because I figured there’s a lot of pieces of this special that have to do with the amount of time I’ve been doing this, and I was a big gamer back in the day, I had my gold cartridge, so I liked “Legend of Zelda,” so I said let me just play with that a little bit. So that special is called “Legend of Fluffy.”
In the special you also talk about people who saw you early in your career and are now bringing their kids or maybe their grandkids to see you perform. What’s it like to be one of these generational comedians in the world of stand-up?
A few years ago, a buddy of mine [told me] “You’re generational talent.” And I said, “What does that even mean?” He said, you got all these different generations coming out to see you, people that were kids the first time they saw you and now they’re adults and now some are bringing their kids. The fans are the ones that created that and now having kids showing up and they’re like, “yeah my dad told me about,” you know, I’m like, that just sounds weird, and I’m like, “oh my God I used to have hair,” so it is really really cool to see that. I think it’s really beautiful that people come out and tell me “I grew up watching you.” Every time they say that I get another gray hair comes out [on my beard] and then another [hair] falls off my head.
You’re probably one of the most positive, uplifting comedians in stand-up, but so much of the special you talk about recent stuff that happened to you that was very intense — some near-death experiences and a break-in that happened at your house.
I think some of the best bits came from something really messed up. [Thieves] broke into my house here in Long Beach. I talked about it in the special, I made light of it … I no longer live there, by the way, in case anybody’s wondering, I sold that house. But yeah, anytime things happen, good or bad. I will try to put it onstage. When it’s bad it probably resonates more.
Nobody wants to hear about you having a good day. They wanna hear about the struggle.
Your style of wearing Hawaiian shirts, shorts and Kangol hats have become part of your brand on stage when people think of “Fluffy.” Was that something that evolved over time or did you always dress like that on stage?
When I first started doing stand up in 1997, everybody was wearing dark colors. It was all about the cool dark shirt, the leather jacket, the black suit button up… I asked myself “how am I gonna be different here and also comfortable?” Because I don’t wanna wear a suit. I didn’t want to wear a suit when I had the 9 to 5 and I don’t wanna wear it now to do this. I remember watching Robin Williams, who was one of my comedy heroes, and he was always into Hawaiian shirts, just bright, colorful, nothing threatening about that, unless you’re Scarface. But if you’re wearing a Hawaiian shirt, you’re here to have a good time. With the shorts, same thing, I wanna be comfortable. I’m a California guy, we wear shorts here. You wanna have things that are memorable aside from having a great presence on stage. People are visual, so what do they remember? They remember the comedian that wears the Hawaiian shirt. The short nickname “Fluffy” [came about] because I tried using “Gabriel Iglesias” — I thought that was a beautiful, nice, wonderful name, and nobody remembered “Iglesias.” At the end of the night they remembered “Fluffy,” and that’s why I stuck with that. A lot of times you’ll try something and you don’t give it enough time to catch. And I learned a lot of that from watching wrestling. They just, they give a guy enough time and you’re like, “oh this sucks, this sucks, this sucks.” [Then finally] “I get it.” That’s why every single special I’m wearing a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and then with time the Kangol hat started happening so right now it’s part of the style. It was planned a long time ago and I just stayed with it and didn’t change.
Where did you learn about branding and marketing when it comes to comedy?
Before I got into comedy, I was actually working a lot in sales. I was always watching how people would promote their products and stuff like that. I worked inside of a Walmart inside of a kiosk selling cellphones back in the day and so we were always trying to come up with ideas for how to brand things better. I also go back to wrestling on this one. I watch a lot of wrestling and I see how they do their promos, how they dress, the lighting, the sound, the experience. A lot of that goes into it and I did have the idea of branding early on and I think a lot of times entertainers don’t take themselves serious enough to be considered a brand.
I didn’t like the nickname Fluffy at first because it made me think of a cat or pillows or comforters or cotton candy, but [the name] stuck. A friend of mine many years ago says, look, man, we’ll get these algorithms going and trust me, the Internet’s gonna take off. That’s how far back we were talking about it. He goes, we’ll start branding this now and you watch what happens and he was right, you know, now if you Google “Fluffy,” I’m the number one thing that pops up.
Fluffy Funko Pop dolls also became a hit in terms of a product people associate with you. How did you get involved with Funko to start making your own toys?
Funko is known worldwide. It’s like it’s the modern day Beanie Baby. I had gotten into toys, making my own self into toys with other companies in the past, and I’ve, I’ve been trying to evolve that and eventually we came upon these Funko Pops.
I wasn’t a fan of them at first, I didn’t know what they were. Someone pulled me aside and they’re like, these are really popular and I’m like, “it’s weird looking.” I started looking into it and next thing I know we make a phone call to Funko and said, “Hey look, you guys have television Funko Pops, you guys have movie Funko Pops, you don’t have comedians. You guys should have comedians there’s a lot of funny comics out there,” I told them I’m interested in being the first. And they’re like, “well, we know who you are, but it’s, that’s not our thing.” Two years later we tried again and they said, well we know who you are and we’re not interested in licensing, but if you’re serious, we’ll produce the figures for you but you have to buy so many and you sell them exclusively — we won’t even carry them in our stores, but we’ll make them.”
Mike Becker, the founder of Funko, later admitted to me they should have licensed my doll when they could because I sold so many, and yeah I think we’re on model Number 11 now on the Funko Pops. Again it’s about persistence. I think a lot of times people give up easily and, you know, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
People know you for collecting VW buses and Marvel memorabilia. Is there something that you collect that maybe people don’t know about?
I collect watches. I’m not wearing one right now, but I collect watches.
Where does that drive to collect stuff come from for you?
That comes from not having s— when I was a kid. I’ve always wanted this, this and that, and Mom’s like, “no, we can’t afford it, mijo.” So when I got in a position where I could get those toys that I wanted as a kid, I made sure that I did it. I figured I don’t have any crazy habits. There’s no drugs, there’s no nothing that’s like, you know, that I’m spending money on, so I’m like I’m gonna, I’m gonna buy the toys. I’m gonna buy the goodies.
The collection for Marvel, that comes from me being a fan of the brand. I love Marvel, I watch DC but I’m pretty one-sided on that one. I even got offered an opportunity to be in a DC film and I turned it down because I’m like, I’m gonna be a hypocrite if I do it. As far as the buses go, my first car was a 1968 Volkswagen bus. Many years later, I had gotten my ex her first car back and I said, you know what, I wanna get my first car back. I got one and then the guys that got me the car said, “if you want another one, let us know,” and then I was like, “well if you come across something cool let me know,” and it just kept going and going and going and now it’s, the whole building’s full… I recently got a free car from Volkswagen because they found out about the collectio. They came down here and they said, “Wow, you are passionate about our product.”
What’s one thing that you would like fans who watched you over your entire career to take away from this new special?
More than anything, I’m just grateful that I’m still here, you know what I mean? This career has a shelf life. It’s not supposed to last this long and so I feel very fortunate that I’m still able to do it, and the fact that we’re still going up, it’s, it’s insane to me. So I’m enjoying every day and I want fans to know that I feel lucky and I’m grateful, and if this goes away tomorrow we can say that we did all this.
[On a personal level], I think what resonates a lot is I make it clear I’m very flawed. I’ve got issues and problems and I’ve got no problem putting it out there. I’m confident in putting my business out there and letting people know what I’m like, so when they run into me in the street, they’re not surprised I’m the same dude.

Opinion | Why Pakistan's Relationship With The Afghan Taliban Is On A Collision Course – News18

The recent cross-border strikes by Pakistan and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), backed by the Afghan Taliban, have heightened tensions between the two neighbours. Traditionally, before the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, Pakistan was a strategic ally of the Taliban. Pakistan provided sanctuary, training, and logistical resources throughout the Taliban’s power struggle, thereby gaining a strategic foothold in the region.
The dynamics post-2021 have changed dramatically, with escalating tensions and inimical relations arising from political, territorial, and strategic security differences. While Pakistan celebrated the Taliban’s resurgence as a potential strategic win, the fallout has proven otherwise. The deep fault lines in their relationship, conflicting interests, and the Taliban’s assertion of independence and nationalism have transformed their alliance into an adversarial relationship, drawing the two nations into conflict.
Pakistan, which played a key role in the Taliban’s rise in the 1990s, has supported the Sunni Islamist group for years. During the 1980s, Pakistan’s President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq and the ISI, aided by the CIA, trained around 90,000 Afghans, including Mullah Omar. Pakistan provided sanctuary, training, weapons, financial support, and logistical assistance to the Taliban during their consolidation of power in their first rule. For over two decades, it played a double game by acting as an American ally in the war on terror while simultaneously backing the Taliban. The vision of achieving strategic depth in Afghanistan, reducing India’s influence, and using the Taliban as a strategic asset was a core foreign policy goal.
The collapse of the Afghan government in 2021, following the US withdrawal, marked the return of the Taliban 2.0 to power. Pakistan’s hope of deepening its strategic influence through a client regime in Kabul, however, backfired. The Taliban’s takeover rendered Pakistan’s utility as a counterweight to the government in Kabul obsolete. Ironically, the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan strengthened the TTP, which was viewed as an ideological group adhering to a strident Deobandi interpretation of Sunni Islam. This development became a significant irritant for Pakistan, as the TTP intensified its terror activities within the country unchecked.
The Durand Line Dispute: The Durand Line, a colonial-era demarcation marking the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, remains a significant point of contention. This border divides Pashtun tribes between the two nations and has been disputed by Afghanistan, giving rise to cross-border hostilities.
For Pakistan, the Durand Line symbolises its sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where Pashtun nationalism is deeply entrenched. In response, Pakistan has fortified its Afghan border with fencing to curb cross-border militancy, smuggling, and infiltration—a strategy inspired by its fencing along the Line of Control with India.
The Taliban, however, rejected the fencing, viewing it as an infringement on Afghanistan’s sovereignty and a threat to the unity of Pashtun communities. Clashes between Afghan and Pakistani forces along the border have escalated, intensifying cross-border hostilities.
The Resurgence of the TTP: The resurgence of the TTP and the rise of radical Islamist terror attacks have caused significant turbulence in Pakistan. Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the TTP has exploited the situation to regroup and intensify attacks on Pakistani soil, targeting security forces and government assets, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The TTP aims to replicate in Pakistan what the Afghan Taliban achieved in Afghanistan: the establishment of an Islamic emirate.
The Taliban-led Afghan government’s reluctance to crack down on the TTP, which shares ideological and operational ties with them, has infuriated Islamabad. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to TTP militants and facilitating cross-border terrorism. From the Taliban’s perspective, pressuring the TTP risks alienating their militant base and undermining their credibility among Pashtun nationalists.
The Taliban’s Shift Toward Independence: The Taliban’s transformation from an insurgent group to a governing entity has brought heightened sensitivity to Afghan nationalism and sovereignty. Pakistan’s strategic attempt to position the Taliban as a proxy ally and secure a dominant role is perceived as interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.
This nationalist stance forms the cornerstone of the Taliban’s foreign policy and survival strategy. They have sought to diversify their global relationships, engaging with China, Russia, and even making Track 2 overtures to India. Pakistan, besides shared borders and religious affinity, has little potential in its present state to contribute to the development of Afghanistan.
In 2024, the Taliban organised a Regional Cooperation Initiative meeting, which included representatives and envoys from 12 leading stakeholder countries, including India and Pakistan. This region-centric approach aimed to build regional legitimacy and foster constructive engagement between Afghanistan and neighbouring countries. Ironically, it also underscored Afghanistan’s broader strategic interests, which diminish Pakistan’s significance in the regional landscape.
The role of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) and hostilities from Baloch separatists further complicate Pakistan’s security landscape. The Afghan-based terror group opposes both the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and the Pakistani government, which it seeks to overthrow to establish a transnational caliphate. The ISKP continues to pose a significant and ongoing threat to Pakistan.
In Balochistan, separatist groups have aligned with the TTP, targeting Chinese investment infrastructure and Pakistani security forces. The failure to cope with these threats exacerbates Pakistan’s insecurity, particularly in a region critical to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). These vulnerabilities have introduced additional complexities to the Pakistan-China relationship.
Pakistan faces significant challenges in managing its relationship with the Taliban, compounded by the fragility of its worsening economic and political situation. This limits Islamabad’s capacity to act against Kabul or risk opening another front. Additionally, the historical inability of major powers like Russia and the US to rein in the Taliban highlights the difficulty of achieving Pakistan’s strategic depth ambitions.
While Pakistan retains some leverage through religious affinity and shared borders, the Taliban’s nationalist orientation and pursuit of international legitimacy have curtailed Islamabad’s influence. Meanwhile, China has deepened its ties with the Taliban-led government, maintaining its embassy in Kabul, exploring economic opportunities, and proposing the extension of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan. This has added a new layer of competition, further eroding Pakistan’s leverage.
Strained Pakistan-Taliban relations present strategic opportunities for India to engage diplomatically and economically with Afghanistan and gain leverage. However, the challenge remains its policy of non-appeasement with militant organisations. A fine balance, coupled with a discreet diplomatic presence, will be essential for safeguarding India’s strategic interests in the region.
India has already invested significantly in Afghan infrastructure and development projects, positioning itself as a dependable partner. A weakened Pakistan-Taliban alliance ought to reduce Islamabad’s leverage to use Afghanistan as a base for anti-India activities.
However, instability in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region carries the risk of spillover effects in India, potentially emboldening Islamist forces and radical groups. Moreover, China’s expanding influence in Afghanistan, by way of resources and infrastructure projects, adds a layer of complexity to India’s strategic calculus in the region.
The intensification of hostilities between Pakistan and the Taliban has heightened instability in the region. The disputed Durand Line, cross-border terrorism, and Afghan nationalism present complex challenges. For Pakistan, this strained relationship jeopardises both its internal security and its strategic aspirations.
For the Taliban, asserting their sovereignty remains a top priority, even at the cost of turning a blind eye to the TTP and alienating its former ally, Pakistan. Its focus continues to be on achieving international legitimacy and securing financial aid for development. Its desire for strategic autonomy further complicates its relationship with Pakistan.

Without a concerted effort to address these pressing issues, the Pakistan-Taliban relationship is likely to remain fractious, fuelling regional instability. Pakistan, on the verge of a survival crisis, can ill afford another front, nor can it be a spectator to the TTP’s enlarged footprint and intensified attacks. Ultimately, destiny has boomeranged on Pakistan with a clear message: ‘As you sow, so shall you reap.’

AI In Malaysia’s Education – OpEd – Eurasia Review

A Journal of Analysis and News

By
As Malaysia prepares to embrace AI in education, educators need to equip themselves with the skills necessary to navigate this evolving landscape. By doing so, they can become effective advocates for their students and the future of Malaysian education. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in education presents significant opportunities and advantages, yet it also introduces challenges and potential drawbacks.
With Malaysia moving towards incorporating AI into its educational system, especially following recent remarks by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, it is essential to consider both the benefits and the risks carefully. AI can enhance teaching support, personalize learning, and streamline administrative tasks, but it also raises ethical concerns around bias, misinformation, and the evolving roles of educators. The intersection of AI and education in Malaysia is a dynamic landscape where innovation and caution must coexist, requiring a thoughtful approach to its adoption.
Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science focused on creating machines, systems, or software capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as reasoning, problem-solving, learning, perception, understanding natural language, and decision-making. AI aims to simulate or replicate human cognitive functions and adapt to new information and situations. The development of AI has progressed significantly over the decades, from early examples like Theseus, a remote-controlled mouse in the 1950s that could navigate a maze and remember the path it took, to today’s advanced AI applications powered by increased computing power, cloud technology, and access to large datasets. AI is now used in various fields, including conversational agents like ChatGPT, driverless cars, medical diagnostics, and dynamic pricing models, making its potential in education both exciting and concerning.
In the context of Malaysian education, AI presents both pros and cons. On the downside, one of the primary concerns is bias. AI systems are only as reliable as the data they are trained on, and if this data contains biases, AI tools could perpetuate stereotypes and social inequalities, which is a significant concern in Malaysia’s diverse society. For instance, biased grading algorithms could unfairly impact students based on race, gender, or socioeconomic background. Additionally, AI can generate errors and misinformation, providing inaccurate or outdated content that can mislead students and educators. This necessitates a critical approach to evaluating AI-generated information rather than accepting it at face value.
Another drawback is the potential for cheating, as students can easily use AI tools like ChatGPT to generate essays, answer quizzes, or complete assignments, raising concerns about academic integrity. Although AI detectors exist, they can sometimes mistakenly flag original student work as AI-generated, complicating the situation for educators. Moreover, excessive reliance on AI could lead to reduced human interaction in learning, which may result in students feeling isolated. This is particularly problematic in Malaysia, where cultural values emphasize communal learning and personal connections, and such isolation could negatively impact student engagement and retention rates. Lastly, there are concerns about job displacement among educators, as the use of AI raises questions about the future of traditional teaching roles.
On the positive side, AI can greatly assist educators by streamlining tasks such as lesson planning and grading, allowing Malaysian teachers to focus more on engaging with students and providing personalized instruction. AI can also offer instant support to students, helping them with difficult concepts when teachers are unavailable, which is particularly valuable in resource-limited Malaysian schools.
Furthermore, AI-powered platforms can deliver individualized learning experiences by tailoring content to meet the diverse needs of Malaysian students, including those from different linguistic backgrounds. Enhanced contextual learning is another benefit. AI tutors can simulate interactions with historical or literary figures, providing students with immersive and engaging learning experiences that align with Malaysia’s educational goals of fostering critical thinking and creativity. Additionally, AI can analyze student performance data to provide personalized feedback and support, helping educators identify struggling students and develop effective interventions, thus enhancing the overall learning experience.
Balancing the benefits of AI in Malaysian education with its potential drawbacks requires careful planning, ongoing evaluation, and thoughtful consideration of how AI can best be integrated into the educational system. While AI has the potential to empower educators, and accelerate learning, and personalized educational experiences, the risks of bias, misinformation, and student isolation must be addressed to ensure a positive impact on students and teachers alike. As Malaysia prepares to embrace AI in education, it is crucial for educators and policymakers to thoughtfully explore AI’s potential and align its integration with national educational goals and values, equipping educators with the skills necessary to navigate this evolving landscape and become effective advocates for their students and the future of Malaysian education.

Officials with the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C, created an animated video showcasing the ancient site where the Megiddo Mosaic would have been found in Israel. The mosaic is on display for first time since being found.
While on a class trip to the historic Ein Karem village in Jerusalem, Israel, a 10-year-old discovered an unexpected surprise.
Nehorai Nir was picking edible plants with his class and believed he saw a red pomegranate on the ground.
“I ran to pick it up and discovered a worm inside, so I reluctantly put it down — but on the way back up the hill I suddenly saw a colorful object shining in the dirt,” Nir said, according to an Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) press release.

The cross medallion is about 100 to 200 years old, so it is not classified as an antique, but it’s still a rare object, according to the IAA.

“The manufacturing method demanded expert craftsmanship which includes setting glass and tiny coloful precious stones, placed with exceeding precision to form miniature patterns,” said Dr. Amit Re’em, IAA Jerusalem district archaeologist.
Re’em added, “This technique was developed in Rome about the year 1800 or slightly earlier, and continued until the early 20th century.”
“Besides its beauty, the significance of this medallion is embedded in its findspot — Ein Karem, a site venerated by Christianity.” Re’em said.

The village’s rich history also includes two churches, the Church of the Visitation and the Church of Saint John, that draw generations of pilgrims to Ein Karem.
IAA Director Eli Escusido said in the press release, “This exciting find in the very month that Christians celebrate Christmas puts the spotlight on Ein Karem as a central place of Christian pilgrimage in the Land of Israel.”
