Sexual boredom outweighs desire in predicting womenâs relationship satisfaction – PsyPost
A recent study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy highlights the role of sexual boredom in shaping sexual and relationship satisfaction among women in long-term monogamous relationships. The research reveals that sexual boredom serves as a key factor mediating the relationship between sexual desireâboth for a partner and for othersâand satisfaction. Interestingly, the study found that experiencing desire for attractive non-partners does not necessarily undermine sexual or relationship satisfaction unless accompanied by sexual boredom.
Long-term relationships often experience shifts in sexual dynamics, making it important to understand the factors that influence satisfaction. Previous research has shown that sexual boredom is linked to diminished satisfaction, yet its exact mechanisms remained unclear. The researchers aimed to clarify whether sexual boredom acts as a bridge between sexual desire and satisfaction, helping to explain how and why desire for a partner or for others affects overall well-being in romantic relationships.
“As a clinician, I feel sexual desire issues are frequently related to boredom in sexual relationships,” said study author Leonor de Oliveira, a postdoctoral fellow at the Eli Coleman Institute for Sex and Gender Health at the University of Minnesota and author of Is it Normal? When we Talk About Sexuality the Answer is Usually Yes.
There are many other clinicians and sex experts that acknowledge this, including Esther Perel, David Schnarch, and Dan Savage, to name a few. However, research falls short in providing answers and insight on the exact mechanisms at play. I wanted to solve that.
The study involved 1,155 Portuguese women in long-term monogamous relationships lasting at least a year. Most participants were heterosexual, with a smaller proportion identifying as lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual. They ranged in age from 18 to 66, with an average age of approximately 32 years. The participants were recruited online and asked to complete a series of validated questionnaires assessing their sexual boredom, sexual desire, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction.
To measure sexual boredom, the researchers used the Portuguese adaptation of the Sexual Boredom Scale, which evaluates feelings of monotony and lack of stimulation in oneâs sexual life. Sexual desire was assessed using the Sexual Desire Inventory-2, which distinguishes between partner-related and other-related desires. Sexual and relationship satisfaction were measured using the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale and the Global Measure of Relationship Satisfaction, respectively.
Sexual boredom emerged as a stronger predictor of both sexual and relationship satisfaction than either partner-related or other-related sexual desire. Women with lower levels of sexual boredom reported higher satisfaction in these areas. Furthermore, the researchers observed that sexual boredom mediated the effects of sexual desire on satisfaction. In other words, higher sexual desire for a partner was associated with lower levels of sexual boredom, which, in turn, predicted greater sexual and relationship satisfaction.
“Our research shows that feeling bored with your sex life can be a big reason why people experience lower sexual and relationship satisfaction,” de Oliveira told PsyPost. “We found that sexual boredom acts as a kind of bridge, connecting low sexual desire to unhappiness in these areas. In fact, about one-third of how satisfied someone feels with their sex life, and just over a quarter of how happy they feel in their relationship, can be linked to this boredom.”
Another key finding was the nuanced role of sexual desire for attractive non-partners. Contrary to the common perception that such desires inherently undermine relationship satisfaction, the study found that these desires do not predict dissatisfaction unless accompanied by sexual boredom. When sexual boredom is low, desire for attractive others does not lead to dissatisfaction, suggesting that such desires may be a normal and even benign aspect of human experience in long-term relationships.
“In our study, we looked at two types of sexual desire: the desire someone feels for their partner and the desire they might feel for someone else they find attractive,” de Oliveira explained. “We found that feeling desire for your partner is linked to higher satisfaction in both your sex life and your relationship, especially when thereâs little to no sexual boredom.”
“On the other hand, feeling attracted to someone outside the relationship was linked to lower satisfaction, but only because of the role of sexual boredomâit didnât have a direct effect by itself. This suggests that other factors we didnât measure also influence how desire for a partner relates to satisfaction, but when it comes to attraction to others, sexual boredom is the main reason it impacts satisfaction.”
The research provides evidence that the presence or absence of sexual boredom can significantly alter the impact of desire on a relationship. But as with all research, there are caveats. The cross-sectional design makes it difficult to determine causation. Additionally, the sample was predominantly composed of young, educated women, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other populations.
“Our sample was non-probabilistic and consisted of volunteers who were relatively young and highly educated,” de Oliveira noted. “It is also possible that those who freely offer to answer questions about their sexuality are not very representative of the general population in their attitudes about sex.”
Future research could explore these dynamics in more diverse groups, including men, non-monogamous relationships, and older individuals. Longitudinal studies could also track how sexual boredom develops and fluctuates over time.
“In my wildest dreams, I would solve everyoneâs sexual boredom and prevent the over-pathologizing of peopleâwomen, as seen in this study, but not onlyâwho present with lower sexual desire than their partners by explaining the exact mechanisms and circumstances in which sexual boredom operates,” de Oliveira said.
“I want to highlight that boredom in itself is not threatening. We all feel bored at times for one reason or another and sex is not an exception. Boredom signals that we might need to change something to feel more excitement and pleasure. Like in any other area of our lives, when we are bored, we seek novel or engaging stimuli. Very often this will mean that we need to have a vulnerable conversation with a partner about sex, which many people find challenging. Boredom is not the problem, but discussing our sexual preferences or needs with our partners might be.”
The study, “The Mediating Role of Sexual Boredom in Womenâs Sexual Desire and Satisfaction,” was authored by Leonor de Oliveira, Pablo Vallejo-Medina, and Joana Carvalho.

Researchers found that oxytocin, delivered via nasal spray, increases feelings of guilt and shame and makes people less likely to harm others, even if it benefits others, highlighting its potential to enhance moral sensitivity and empathy.
A new study has found that married or cohabiting people have fewer manipulative traits and favor passionate, selfless love styles, while singles display more playful and obsessive love styles.
A new study examines how couples’ earnings evolve over decades of marriage, exploring patterns of financial contributions and their relationship to socio-economic factors. By focusing on long-term trajectories, the research provides new insights into economic roles within marriages.
Recent research found no meaningful link between sensitivity to negative stimuli and conservative ideology, challenging a popular theory. It suggests political differences may stem from other psychological or contextual factors, not negativity bias.

US Court Appearance Scheduled For Do Kwon Amid Claims Of $40 Billion In Crypto Losses – Bitcoinist
Do Kwon, the South Korean entrepreneur behind the failed cryptocurrencies TerraUSD and Luna, is set to appear in a Manhattan federal court on Thursday, facing serious criminal fraud charges.Â
This follows his recent extradition from Montenegro, where he had been detained for over a year after attempting to use falsified travel documents at the countryâs Podgorica airport.
Kwonâs legal troubles stem from the catastrophic collapse of his digital currencies in 2022, which resulted in an estimated loss of $40 billion for investors.Â
The SEC and the Manhattan US Attorneyâs office allege that Kwon misled investors about the stability of TerraUSD, a stablecoin purported to maintain a value of $1. The failure of TerraUSD, along with its sister token Luna, triggered a broader downturn in the cryptocurrency market, impacting established digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC).
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have charged him with multiple counts, including securities fraud, wire fraud, commodities fraud, and conspiracy. However, Do Kwon has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he acted transparently regarding the workings of his products.
In a significant development last June, Kwon agreed to pay an $80 million civil fine to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of a $4.55 billion settlement related to his company, Terraform Labs.Â
As part of the settlement, Do Kwon also accepted a ban on future cryptocurrency transactions. Despite this, Kwonâs legal challenges are far from over, as he faces the potential for criminal penalties in the US judicial system.
During a civil trial in April, a federal jury found Kwon and Terraform Labs liable for defrauding investors. Closing arguments from Terraformâs legal team contended that Kwon had been truthful about his products, even as they failed. However, Do Kwon was absent from the trial due to his detention in Montenegro.
As Bitcoinist reported, Montenegro’s Minister of Justice, Bojan BoĆŸoviÄ, signed the extradition order for Kwon last week, rejecting South Korea’s request for his return. This decision came after a legal battle that involved extradition requests from both the US and South Korea for over a year.Â
Do Kwon joins a growing list of cryptocurrency executives facing legal repercussions following the market’s downturn in 2022.Â
Notable figures include Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the collapsed FTX exchange, who is currently appealing a 25-year sentence for defrauding customers, and Alex Mashinsky, former CEO of Celsius Network, who recently pleaded guilty to fraud charges.
As Kwon prepares for his court appearance, the outcome could have significant implications for the future of cryptocurrency regulation and investor protection.Â
The courtroom drama is poised to draw considerable attention, not only due to Kwon’s high-profile status but also because of the broader impact his case may have on the rapidly digital currency landscape.
At the time of writing, Terra’s Luna Classic (LUNC) token is trading at $0.0001148, up 1.2% in the 24-hour time frame.Â

Cryptocurrency remains a golden opportunity for investors looking to achieve life-changing wealth. Happy Birthday, Bitcoin! The top cryptocurrency is old enough to drive – Quartz
Bitcoin is now 16 years old!
Satoshi Nakamoto, a name used by the creator (or creators) of Bitcoin, mined the first Bitcoin block on Jan. 3, 2009. This âgenesisâ block followed the release of a Bitcoin whitepaper on October 31, 2008, which laid the foundation for the now-leading cryptocurrency.
2024 proved to be a landmark year for Bitcoin, culminating in an all-time high of $108,135 in December. Hypothetically, had someone invested $1,000 in Bitcoin on January 3, 2024, they would have witnessed a 115% growth in their investment, and seen it rise to $2,150.
Over the past 16 years, Bitcoin has grown from a novel idea into a global phenomenon, shaping the cryptocurrency market and disrupting financial systems worldwide. From its humble beginnings in 2009, to its climb to $1 in 2011, and to its momentary rise above $100,000 in 2024, the journey so far reflects Bitcoinâs disruptive power.
Letâs dive deeper into Bitcoinâs journey and see how it came to be a mainstream asset.
Bitcoin rocketed in popularity after COVID-19 lockdowns. In 2021, it gained acceptance in mainstream finance with endorsements from influential figures. One of the pivotal moments was its inclusion in 401(k) plans, which marked a significant shift in how traditional retirement savings strategies embraced digital assets.
After a prolonged bear market connected to the FTX collapse in 2022, Bitcoin made a strong comeback in 2024. Early on in the year, Bitcoin reached a high of $73,000 due to the SECâs approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, followed by the U.K.âs approval of Bitcoin-linked securities being listed on the stock market.
In a year alone, the U.S. Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated over $21 billion in total net flows, a noteworthy achievement considering the typical challenges faced by new ETFs. By comparison, it took gold ETFs around five years to reach the same level of net inflows.
Adding to the 2021 momentum, high-profile endorsements from business leaders, including Tesla (TSLA-6.56%) CEO Elon Musk, played a crucial role in amplifying Bitcoinâs appeal. In 2021, Tesla spent $1.5 billion on the cryptocurrency. Other publicly traded companies also added Bitcoin to their balance sheets.
As of Dec. 30, 2024, business intelligence firm MicroStrategy owns the most at 446,400 Bitcoin.
The entry of financial giants including BlackRock and Fidelity into the crypto world has bolstered the proposition that cryptocurrency could be the future of finance. Financial institutions are working on the tokenization of funds, and they seem to no longer see blockchain as a threat but rather as a tool.
