The opening sentence of the official Press Statement on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter (1924-2024) succinctly incapsulates the protocol, priorities and position of the global hegemon: “Jimmy Carter was a United States President, a U.S. Navy veteran, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and a humanitarian who dedicated his life to promoting peace, democracy, and human rights.” For his legions of admirers, Carter will perhaps be better remembered for his post-presidential contributions rather than the predicaments of his presidency.
The legacy of Carter, the 39th President of the US, who served for a single term between 1977 and 1981, is somewhat complicated. When he took over from President Gerald Ford, all was not well with the US. The 1970s had begun with the complete disgrace of US foreign policy in Asia, such as its support for the genocidal regime in Pakistan, indiscriminate bombardment of Laos, carpet bombing of Cambodia and multiple massacres of civilians in Vietnam. The war in Indochina had ended, but Carter was left with the task of clearing its geopolitical debris.
Things weren’t much better on the home front. The 39th Vice President Spiro Agnew had resigned when charged with tax evasion. President Richard Nixon had disgraced himself in the Watergate scandal. Hit by the oil embargo, the economy was in a tailspin with low growth and high inflation. The contempt for established authorities had created widespread cynicism. Carter’s first job was to reignite what he called “a fresh faith in the old dream” in his inaugural address.
Just as politicos of relatively weak countries are judged by their ability to resist “foreign intervention”, the leadership of powerful nations must exert power abroad to maintain their domestic legitimacy and international supremacy. Carter failed to prevent the fall of the Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in Iran, declined to offer him asylum and was completely unsuccessful in dealing with the 444-day hostage crisis in Tehran. The Operation Eagle Claw to rescue hostages ended in a disaster. He lost his re-election bid in November 1980 to the Republican candidate Ronald Reagan.
Compromised convictions
Realpolitik requires that principles be expended in the pursuit of permanent interests. Charged with handling the oil crisis, Carter stood firmly with Suharto in Indonesia, whose 32-year dictatorship has been labelled as “one of the most brutal and corrupt of the 20th century”. He supported the crooked dictatorship of President Ferdinand E Marcos in the Philippines.
Along with Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev, President Carter also sent a mercy appeal to Pakistani dictator Gen Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, but he had chosen not to use diplomatic and ‘other’ levers to ensure a fair trial for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He perhaps found that geostrategic interests in Afghanistan were more pressing than humanitarian concerns.
In a reluctantly critical piece “How Jimmy Carter Started America’s Afghanistan Folly”, Kai Bird, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and the author of the book The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter describes how Carter’s authorisation of aid to the Mujahideen was aimed at inducing a Soviet military intervention. A decision that was meant to be Soviet Union’s Vietnam ultimately turned out to be Vietnam 2.0 for the US too.
The role of the US in institutionalising three military regimes in South Korea remains unexposed, but it has been documented that the Carter administration supported the brutal crushing of the Gwangju uprising by military dictator Chun Doo-hwan. Even the supposed successes of his presidency, such as the formalisation of the diplomatic relationship with the People’s Republic of China on January 1, 1979, or the Camp David Accords, weren’t without negative consequences for the future of human rights, peace and democracy.
While recognition of the regime in Beijing was inevitable after the Nixon-Mao handshake of February 22, 1972, Carter’s endorsement of the earlier rapprochement pushed all possibilities of democratic transition in the communist stronghold into the background. It’s convenient to assume that Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin deceived the American president, but the fact remains that the peace treaty concluded between Israel and Egypt in March 1979 had intentionally left the fate of Palestine hanging in balance.
In his later life, Carter himself came to criticise Israel for imposing apartheid on the Palestinians. Israel’s continuing “Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza” is a testimony of the failure of the Camp David Accords. The 1979 Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II (SALT II) had to be withdrawn before its ratification.
Carter administration’s policies on the African continent proved to be more balanced. The white-only rule in Rhodesia ultimately had to make way for independent Zimbabwe. Condemnation of the apartheid was a signal to the world that the regime in South Africa had become unsustainable.
After the ratification, the Panama treaties were rightfully claimed as an unqualified success of the Carter administration. Unfortunately, the past and forthcoming president of the US is threatening to scrap the deal.
Convenient campaigns
Carter came into his own in his post-presidency years as he embraced global campaigns for human rights, health and habitat, with the turning point being the Carter Center which he founded in 1982 together with Rosalynn Carter. Its activities made him the “best ex-president America ever had”.
His first trip to the Everest region of Nepal in 1985 was personal, but subsequent visits in 2007, 2008 and 2013 were intended to assist the ongoing peace process. The problem with high-level visits is that dignitaries are often inadequately briefed about ground realities. In an interaction in 2007, it appeared that Carter had little knowledge about the situation in Madhesh.
Only an agitated and brash interlocutor from Madhesh could have had the temerity to ask the ex-president from Plains, Georgia whether he had heard about a derisive saying on the East Coast that ‘a man from South would have sh.t on his shoes’ in a desperate attempt to draw his attention towards the plight of Madheshis. He had replied in the negative with a straight face.
Carter came from the richest family of the Plains, with a landholding of several thousand acres and a flourishing peanut business. He was ready to listen but unwilling to advocate for economic and social justice in a country on the cusp of historic transformation. He chose to ignore the subtle political engineering and conferred international legitimacy upon an extra-constitutional regime conducting the polls to form Constituent Assembly II.
At his last press meet as the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh (1932-2024) had said, “I honestly believe history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media …”. Perhaps the technocratic premier Singh had been too optimistic: History is seldom kind to anyone be it the slave-owning George Washington, the hater of Indians Winston Churchill or the peace-loving Mahatma Gandhi. At its best, history is considerate towards iconic figures.
In a period when the Soviet Union showed hope to the Third World and the US ignited desires, Carter attempted to prove that human rights mattered more. Rest in peace, the venerable moralist and vulnerable pragmatist rolled into one—the life and time of ex-President Carter shows that in a world of uncertainties, all one can do is cope with a clear mind and a compassionate heart. On that reflective note, Happy New Year 2025.

Neyali Perez death: Foster mom charged with injury to disabled person after 16-year-old found dead inside her Heights area home – ABC13 Houston
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston foster mother is in jail on Tuesday night after being accused of causing horrific injuries that led to the death of a teenager under her care.
Back in March, 16-year-old Neyali Perez was found dead inside the home of her foster mother, Tracy Gonzalez.
On Monday, Dec. 30, Gonzalez was arrested in front of the same house on charges of injury to a disabled person.
Neighbors shared a video of Gonzalez being taken into custody on Monday in Independence Heights. The video also shows Child Protective Services workers taking her two younger daughters away.
According to records, Neyali Perez weighed just 78 pounds when she died and suffered from several horrific injuries.
"It is alleged (that when Perez was found), she was only wearing a diaper," a judge read out during Gonzalez's initial probable cause court appearance. "The records show that Houston Fire Department paramedics found Perez 'had stab wounds to the genitals, suffering from dehydration and malnutrition.'"
The news that Gonzalez was charged in the death of Perez shocked neighbors. The Rodriguez family lives next door, and until a year ago, they saw Perez regularly.
"She actually went to school with my daughter," Frank Rodriguez said, adding that Perez did not look outwardly handicapped. The family tells ABC13 that Perez told them that she had learning differences and had been diagnosed with autism.
"She was just a normal girl. Going to school," Rodriguez said.
The Rodriguez family says Perez stopped showing up for school a year ago but that when asked, Gonzalez always had an excuse.
However, new court records show her condition deteriorated considerably under Gonzalez's care, and the foster mother never notified authorities.
In February 2022, medical records show Perez weighed 118 pounds, 40 pounds heavier than her weight when she was found dead this past March.
Perez was found wearing nothing but a diaper, and her other clothes were all dirty.
Gonzalez is now behind bars with a bond set at $200,000.
Investigators say Gonzalez didn't report the condition of Perez because she didn't want to lose custody of her younger children.

PAWS Airdrop Listing Date: What Will be Expected PAWS Token Price? – CoinGape
TRENDING TODAY
Highlights
2025 will witness the most awaited Dog-themed cryptos, including PAWS, with a massive PAWS airdrop. Previously, the token generation event was set to happen in 2024 but got delayed more and more. However, the enthusiasm is persistent as the listing date approaches, most importantly regarding the PAWS token price and airdrop distribution. So let’s discuss that.
What Will be PAWS Token Price With Listing & PAWS Airdrop?
PAWS coin is in the process of listing, but the team has not officially commented on the listing price, leaving the investors with random guesses. However, a few platforms have made some price estimates based on the similarity between PAWS and other dog-themed meme coins like DOGS. As per that, the PAWS token price could range between $0.0072 and $0.0078 per Binance.
However, the PAWS token price can vary greatly depending on user acquisitions, the total supply of tokens, and other factors. This is why only further updates and the TGE could clarify the situation.
The PAWS coin launch and airdrop have been in discussion for months, but finally, the investors are getting more clarity. Regarding the updates, the most awaited PAWS snapshot event has already happened on December 30, 2024, revealing how many tokens a user will receive with the airdrop. The eligibility for that has been cleared already, as the users need to be active users of the PAWS mini-app on Telegram and complete various simple tasks to earn the PAWS points. More importantly, the users need to connect their TON wallets before the snapshot to ensure they receive the airdrop.
However, users are becoming uneasy as the team has not cleared crucial information like the PAWS airdrop listing date, total supply, percentage of token distribution, and many other key details. Regardless, things will become more evident with time. Meanwhile, the team has advised the users to stay connected with the mini-app for further updates.
Crypto airdrops are a way to join the token’s community. More importantly, they allow users to earn free tokens with simple tasks, which is why investors have been eyeing the PAWS airdrop listing date to make some profits. With the token allocation revelation done, investors will find out how much they will receive and how much they could profit when the expected PAWS token price is around $0.007. However, things can change drastically, as many similar Telegram mini-games token launch teams have made last-minute changes in the airdrops, including Hamster Kombat, which is getting its season 2 soon. With that, the investors are hoping to see the HMSTR price rally to $1 after its collapse with last-minute changes in airdrop allocation. Now, we have to see what the PAWS listing will bring to users.

Despite the Mexican government’s efforts to reassure him in recent weeks, Donald Trump announced on December 22 that “immediately” after his inauguration, he would classify drug cartels as terrorist organizations. This measure, already floated during his first term, would authorize him to strike at criminal groups on the other side of the 3,152-kilometer border that separates the two countries, a scenario unacceptable to Mexico.
A few hours later, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed any form of US “interference” in her country. “We will never subordinate ourselves,” she declared, two weeks after she announced that she would stop publicly responding to provocations from the future president of the US, the country that receives over 80% of Mexico’s exports. The next day, she returned to a more conciliatory tone, declaring that the president-elect had “never spoken of intervention in Mexico” and promising that their governments would work in good harmony.
The exchange raised doubts about relations between Mexico and the US after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. “The Trump of 2024 is, in a sense, the same as that of 2016: unpredictable, defiant and swaggering, but in a supercharged version, with desires for revenge and accumulated resentments; he’s surrounded by sycophants and radicals who won’t slow him down and who are more familiar with the arcana of power,” noted Martha Barcena, who was Mexico’s ambassador to Washington between 2018 and 2020.

Top Critics Name Worst Movies Of 2024 – Forbes
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – APRIL 24: Chris Pine attends the Los Angeles premiere of “Poolman” … [+]
Critics have made their picks for the worst movies of 2024, which includes films featuring the likes of Chris Pine, Dennis Quaid, Zack Snyder and even Mickey Mouse.
While Hollywood gave fans plenty of reasons to cheer about with such critical successes as Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine and Longlegs—and more recently films like The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown and Nosferatu—the film industry produced its share of critical duds, too.
Some of the films that met the ire of critics were big-budget films, while others were independent films that featured the work of A-list stars.
Listed below are some of the films targeted by critics from their “worst” lists of 2024.
Variety movie critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge each had a list of that they thought were the five worst movies that played in theaters in 2024.
Gleiberman’s pick for the fifth worst movie of the year was Lisa Frankenstein—directed by Zelda Williams, who is the daughter of late acting icon Robin Williams—and written by Juno Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody.
Gleiberman wrote of the monster-themed romantic comedy, “It’s an undead teenage slasher romance that feels like the world’s most needlessly overcomplicated SNL sketch.”
The End—a survival comedy starring Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon—earned the No. 4 spot on Gleiberman’s worst films list, while Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid as President Ronald Regan, earned the No. 3 spot.
“Released just in time to grease the wheels for Trump’s victory, this schlock Ronald Reagan biopic was a hit in theaters, playing to an audience of make-TV-movies-bad-again nostalgists,” Gleiberman wrote of the film.
Gleiberman wasn’t the only critic who panned Reagan. The film also earned a collective 18% “rotten” rating from 68 Rotten Tomatoes critics, but that didn’t deter audiences from going to see the movie anyway.
No. 2 on the Variety critic’s list was the genre-mashing satire Rumours, starring Cate Blanchett, while Chris Pine earned the dishonorable distinction of making the No. 1 worst film on Gleiberman’s list with Poolman.
“Even if you’re a fan of Chris Pine, you may stare slack-jawed at this absurdist disaster of an L.A. noir, which he directed, co-wrote, and stars in,” the critic wrote in Variety.
Variety critic Peter Debruge named the Netflix-produced sci-fi space opus Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut as his pick for the fifth-worst film of 2024.
“Honestly, can you think of anything more gratuitous or unnecessary than a two-part Star Wars knockoff directed by pop-culture remix artist Zack Snyder? How about a bloodier (but weirdly sexless) six-hour director’s cut of that same movie,” Debruge wrote.
No. 4 on Debruge’s list was the big-screen adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s classic children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon, starring Zachary Levi. Meanwhile, writer-director Johnny Mack’s church movie spoof Not Another Church Movie—starring Vivica A. Fox and Mickey Rourke—took the No. 3 spot on the critic’s “worst” list.
No. 2 on Debruge’s list was the Mickey Mouse-skewering horror movie The Mouse Trap, the latest film to brutally take advantage of a beloved character becoming available to slice and dice in the public domain, a la Winnie-the-Pooh.
“The film provides zero scares and countless questions, like why can he teleport, and why would anyone scream after seeing a guy in a Mickey Mouse mask?” Debruge asks in his review.
No. 1 on Debruge’s worst movies list is writer-director Luc Besson’s crime thriller DogMan, starring Caleb Landry Jones.
“Besson’s third-rate Joker rip-off is ill-conceived on every level — a convoluted act of misplaced empathy in which a police psychologist struggles to tame a deeply traumatized outsider who was literally raised in a doghouse,” Debruge wrote.
While some individual critics named the worst movies of 2024, critic aggregation sites like Metacritic also assembled a list of the worst films cinemas had to offer this past year.
Metacritic’s list consisted of 15 films, which included high profile animated releases like The Garfield Movie (No. 14) and the disastrous remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgård (No. 13).
Also making Metacritic’s “worst” movies list was director Eli Roth’s adaptation of the blockbuster video game Borderlands (No. 8) and Marvel’s movie dud Madame Web (No.6), starring Dakota Johnson.
Earning the No. 1 spot on Metacritic’s worst movies of 2024 list was the obscure sci-fi horror comedy Lumina, which only featured one notable name—Eric Roberts—who only appeared in a cameo role.
Metacritic’s summary of the film noted that it was the only film that earned a single-digit Metascore ranking (6 out of 100) all year.
“You may laugh at parts of Lumina—critics definitely did, while noting that the humor was not intended—but the nearly two-hour film is probably far too long to justify watching it ironically,” the Metacritic summary read in part.
Here is the entire list of Metacritic’s worst 15 movies of 2024, along with their respective Metascores.
15. Killer Heat (33)
14. The Garfield Movie (31)
13. The Crow (30)
12. Poolman (29)
11. AfrAId (28)
10. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (27)
9. Mary (27)
8. Borderlands (26)
7. History of Evil (26)
6. Madame Web (26)
5. Krazy House (23)
4. Reagan (22)
3. Duchess (22)
2. City of Dreams (14)
1. Lumina (6)
While Rotten Tomatoes didn’t release a list citing the worst films of 2024, a search of the site reveals that the review aggregator did give one film a 0% “rotten” rating this year.
The Sylvester Stallone action film Armor earned the lowly score—based on 23 reviews—when it was released in November.

Media Miss by the Left: Biden-Harris relationship, meetings since election have been ‘frosty': WSJ – Straight Arrow News

The relationship between President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has been described in a Wall Street Journal report as “frosty” since the election. Meetings between Biden and Harris have not been warm or friendly, according to the report.
The report highlights a lack of collaboration between Biden and Harris in recent months. Sources indicate that both leaders have struggled to maintain a positive working relationship, while White House staffers have reportedly called the work environment “draining” and “depressing.” One White House spokesperson denied reports that Biden and Harris aren’t getting along.
Recently, Biden has publicly reflected on the end of his tenure, saying he regrets appointing Merrick Garland as attorney general and that he believes he could’ve beaten President-elect Donald Trump if he had stayed in the race.

Sister Wright Shares 4 Lessons for Deliverance From Today's Storms – Church Newsroom

By Rachel Sterzer Gibson, Church News
During a Tuesday, November 5, devotional at Brigham Young University, Sister Amy A. Wright, First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency, testified of a loving and merciful God who has established “a divine pattern of deliverance for His children.”
To begin her address to those gathered in the Marriott Center on the Provo, Utah, campus, Sister Wright invited listeners to study Acts Chapter 27, which recounts how the apostle Paul navigates a dangerous sea voyage.
“As we study his deliverance from this perilous journey, we discover there is a divine pattern of deliverance in our own lives and lessons to be learned that will help us successfully navigate the storms of our day,” Sister Wright said.
After being arrested and sent to Rome, the apostle Paul was placed under the guard of Julius, a centurion.
“Julius not only allowed some of Paul’s friends to accompany him on his journey but also granted the apostle liberty of visiting the Church in Sidon. The companionship of Paul’s noble friends undoubtedly strengthened him for the trials that lay ahead,” Sister Wright shared.
Another example of “good friends” can be found in Mark 2, Sister Wright said, when a man “sick of the palsy” was carried on a mat by four friends to be healed by Jesus.
“I admonish you to seek friends who will lead you to Jesus Christ,” Sister Wright told listeners. “Friends who will not be easily deterred. Friends who will pick you up and carry you, if need be, to the feet of the Savior. Friends who follow the counsel of Jesus Christ’s living Prophet. And most importantly, I pray that you will be that kind of friend.”
As Paul sailed near Cyprus, the captain of the boat decided to change course and seek protection “because the winds were contrary” (Acts 27:4).
As individuals navigate the storms of life, it is essential that they too seek protection, Sister Wright said. “Jesus Christ has the power to give us the protection we need. Trust Him. We access His power by virtue of the covenants we have made.”
President Russell M. Nelson has testified, “Each person who makes covenants in baptismal fonts and in temples — and keeps them — has increased access to the power of Jesus Christ” (“Overcome the World and Find Rest,” October 2022 general conference).
At a port called Fair Havens on the south side of the island of Crete, Paul — as a prophet, seer and revelator — foresaw the danger that was to befall the ship.
Unfortunately for Paul and the others on the ship, “The centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul” (Acts 27:11).
Sister Wright admonished listeners to always follow the Prophet. “How blessed we are to have a living Prophet on the earth, President Russell M. Nelson — a prophetic voice of warning, guidance, counsel and love. A Prophet who boldly and lovingly testifies of what we need to know and do to effectively traverse the trials of our day,” Sister Wright said.
Despite Paul’s warning, the ship set sail, and just beyond Crete, the wind turned dangerous.
In an effort to save the ship, the sailors threw over the cargo and tied cables around the bottom of the ship to strengthen the hull. Eventually, an angel appeared to Paul, saying “Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee” (Acts 27:24).
Paul told the crew, “Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me” (Acts 27:25).
Sister Wright noted that Paul did not simply state he believed in God but that he believed God.
“The scriptures are replete with powerful assurances that God verifies His word. … He knows us. He loves us. And He has a plan for us,” she said.
Paul and his companions spent two weeks in the terror of the storm. Knowing they were drawing close to land, the scriptures say they feared they should fall upon rocks, so “they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day” (Acts 27:29).
Sister Wright asked: “Do you ever find yourself during the struggle of life ‘wishing for the day’ — praying for and seeking calmer seas? When do those calm seas come? … There is always going to be something in life we wish was different. Instead of ‘wishing for the day’ — wishing and waiting and hoping for calmer waters — we would be wise to strengthen and fortify our anchors.”
These four anchors, or lessons, learned from Paul’s sea voyage tethered Sister Wright to the Savior as she navigated a cancer diagnosis several years ago, she said. “And because of that experience, I will be tethered to Jesus Christ for the rest of my life.”
In conclusion, she testified, “Jesus Christ is He who stands ready at our hour of need to assist us. May we rejoice in our redemption and with bowed knee acknowledge the Son of God as our Redeemer and Deliverer is my prayer.”
