Kung fu nuns kick their way to spirituality – The Express Tribune
FI
Nepal's nunnery is a beacon of gender equality
About a dozen nuns performed hand chops and high kicks, some of them wielding swords, as they showed off their martial art skills to hundreds of cheering well-wishers at the long-awaited reopening of their nunnery in Nepal.
The nuns of the hill-top Druk Amitabha Monastery, put on a show of strength to mark the institution's reopening five years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close its doors to the public.
The group of kung fu nuns, aged from 17 to 30, are members of the 1,000-year-old Drukpa lineage, which gives nuns equal status as monks and is the only female order in the patriarchal Buddhist monastic system.
Usually, nuns are expected to cook and clean and are not allowed to practise any form of martial art. But His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa, a monk who ranks only slightly below the Dalai Lama in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy, decided to train women in kung fu to improve their health and spiritual well-being. He opened the nunnery in 2009 and it now has 300 members aged between six and 54.
"We do kung fu to keep ourselves mentally and physically fit, and our aim is to promote women's empowerment and gender equality," said Jigme Jangchub Chosdon, 23, a nun who is originally from Ladakh in India.
The nuns come from Bhutan, India and Nepal and are all trained in kung fu, the Chinese martial art for self-defence and strength.
"With the confidence from kung fu, I really want to help the community, young girls to build their own strength," said 24-year-old Jigme Yangchen Gamo, a nun from Ramechhap in Nepal.
The nunnery's website says that the combination of gender equality, physical strength and respect for all living things represents the order's return to its "true spiritual roots".
In the past, the nuns have completed lengthy expeditions on foot and by bike in the Himalayas to raise money for disaster relief, as well as to promote environmentally-friendly living. Reuters

Aylmer Psychic Fair: Spirituality, Healing and Love – QCNA EN
Mélissa Gélinas LJI Reporter
Every spring and fall since 2022, Megan Driskell, a medium and Reiki teacher, invites people to participate in the Aylmer Psychic Fair, a spiritual event that she created.
Activities such as healing sessions, psychic readings and art workshops are among the many offered during the event. Everyone can participate in activities of all kinds allowing them, in turn, to discover people from the local spiritual community.
Megan began her career as a Reiki teacher and worked in this field for almost 10 years. Subsequently, she decided to work in mental health by becoming a coach to help people who had suffered from trauma. “I have always been very connected spiritually, but being able to heal from my own traumas gave me the opportunity to fully reconnect with my gifts,” Megan says.
With the Aylmer Psychic Fair, Megan aims to bring spirituality and healing to the community. “It helps connect people to love and healing,” she states. “It’s very motivating to see between 80 and 200 people present at each event.”
Megan knows the owners of Café Mulligan very well and the Aylmer Psychic Fair events have always taken place there. She is very connected with them, and she says they have always been there to support the vision of her project. “They are people with wonderful souls who are very concerned about everyone’s healing,” she states.
A group of women from the fields of arts and spirituality also work in collaboration with her during her events. “From the beginning, they have been an integral part of the Aylmer Psychic Fair,” she explains.

Base, the layer-2 network launched by Coinbase in 2023, is firing on all cylinders as its ecosystem growth gains steam. It has overtaken other popular L2 networks like Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism to become the biggest platform in the industry.
Base Blockchain has also overtaken most layer-1 networks like Cardano, Avalanche, Tezos, Cronos, and Near Protocol.
For example, Base has a total locked value of over $3.6 billion and a stablecoin market value of $3.6 billion. In contrast, Arbitrum, established in 2021, has a TVL of $3 billion and a stablecoin market value of $6 billion.
The most notable competitor to Base is Cardano, which has a market cap of over $30 billion today. Base has 416 DeFi dApps, while Cardano has just 40 dApps and a TVL of $460 million.
The same performance is happening in the Decentralized Exchange (DEX) industry, where Base has become a major player. Data shows that it has handled over $180 billion in cryptocurrency volume since its inception.
Numerous decentralized applications (dApps) drive base Blockchain’s growth. Aerodrome has become one of the biggest DEX networks in the crypto industry, handling over $107 billion in transactions cumulatively and $31 billion in the last 30 days.
Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Swaap, and Sushi also thrive on the Base blockchain. Since expanding to the network in 2024, they have handled over $4 billion in volume.
Meanwhile, Base Blockchain is also seeing strong growth in other areas of the DeFi industry. Morpho Blue has gained a TVL of over $367 million in its network, a figure that is continung to accelerate.
Moonwell, another lending protocol that expanded to Base from Polkadot, has also seen strong growth, with its TVL soaring to over $158 million. The other top players in the Base Blockchain network are Extra Finance, Overnight Finance, and Beefy.
These numbers mean that the Base Blockchain would attract a substantially high valuation if it was to have an airdrop. A Polymarket poll places the odds of an airdrop in the first quarter at just 10%.
The best way to estimate the potential market cap of Base is to compare it with other layer-2 networks. Arbitrum, which is smaller than Base, has a market cap of $3.13 billion and a fully diluted valuation of $7.4 billion. Optimism has a market cap of $2.47 billion and an FDV of over $7.8 billion.
Therefore, there is a likelihood that Base would receive an FDV of at least $10 billion were it to launch an airdrop. That would be a big figure for Coinbase, which has a market cap of over $62 billion.
Since launching in 2012, Bankless Times is dedicated to bringing you the latest news and informational content within the alternative finance industry. Our news coverage spans the whole crypto-sphere so you’ll always stay up to date — be it on cryptocurrencies, NFTs, ICOs, Fintech, or Blockchain.

Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun in a still from ‘Love Me’ | Photo Credit: Bleeker Street
The first trailer for Love Me, a sci-fi drama featuring Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun, offers a glimpse into a post-human world where technology takes center stage. Directed and written by Sam and Andy Zuchero, the film explores themes of identity, connection, and transformation through a blend of live-action, animatronics, and classic animation.
Set in a future where humans have long been extinct, the story follows a digital buoy, voiced by Stewart, and a satellite, voiced by Yeun. These remnants of human innovation navigate a desolate Earth and orbit, seeking meaning and love with only the internet to guide them.
Kristen Stewart, speaking at Sundance earlier this year, described the film as a deeply personal exploration. “It’s about everyone… fears, insecurities, and the way we present ourselves. Watching it felt like seeing everyone I’ve ever met,” she told Deadline.
Love Me premiered to acclaim at Sundance 2024, winning the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize for its compelling focus on science and technology. The film’s unique narrative and visual storytelling have generated significant anticipation ahead of its U.S. theatrical release on January 31, 2025.

Bellator NYC results: Huge underdog Zach Freeman chokes out Aaron Pico in 24 seconds – MMA Junkie
Heavily hyped Aaron Pico is still a work in progress.
Zach Freeman (9-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) brought that fact into stark relief with an uppercut and guillotine choke that had Pico (0-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) tapping quick.
The lightweight bout opened up the main card of today’s Bellator NYC event at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It aired on pay-per-view following the Bellator 180 card on Spike with prelims on MMAjunkie.
It was over just 24 seconds into the fight when Pico tapped and briefly went unconscious as Freeman modified his choke and squeezed with a D’Arce.
Pico handed him the opportunity. Perhaps anxious to put a knockout on the board after promising one at the event’s weigh-ins, Pico immediately closed the distance and fired off an overhand right. Unfortunately for him, Freeman beat him to the punch with an uppercut.
Pico’s knees buckled and Freeman grabbed the neck. Pico tried to get free, but was quickly forced to tap.
The 33-year-old Freeman, who’d been 1-2 in his previous three outings, scores a huge upset. Pico, 20, goes back to the drawing board having learned a painful lesson.
