The phenomenon is short-lived and has the potential to be the strongest of the year
As has become customary for stargazers, the Quadrantids will be the first star shower of the year, with the night sky showing up to 120 shooting stars per hour.
Once the Earth‘s atmosphere reaches the place where the remnants of asteroid 2003 EH are floating in space, the spectacle will begin.
According to information from the website space.com, the first star shower of the year will be visible on the night of 2 to 3 January 2025, for a period of no more than six hours, due to the fact that the Earth quickly crosses the remains of the comet and that is why the Quadrantids is such a fleeting phenomenon.
The Quadrantids have the potential to be the strongest star shower of 2025 and according to EarthSky, the predicted peak is from 4:53 am (Eastern time) until dawn.
A quarter moon will light up the night, so it is not recommended that stargazers take trips in search of dark skies to appreciate the event.
However, the best places to view the phenomenon are in the western regions of the United States, in the hope that the moonlight will allow the fireballs of the Quadrantids to be brighter and more visible.
The rate of Quadrantids is recognized by NASA as one of the most intense throughout the year, with a frequency of more than 100 per hour from a point approaching the North Star.
The Quadrantids take their name from the constellation Quadran Muralis, which has not been recognized by the scientific community since 1920, as most of the stars are now part of the constellation Boyero.
This meteor shower, whose source is the aforementioned comet 2003 EH1, found its point of origin in 2003. NASA, in December of that year, Peter Jenniskens of NASA’s Ames Research Center found evidence that it was related to the aforementioned comet, which probably broke up 500 years ago.
The Quadrantid meteor shower is less recognized than the Geminids and Orionids because it is dimmer fainter and easier to miss.
This meteor shower, which traditionally occurs during January, can have a large number of spiritual meanings. According to science, meteors are made of stardust connected to the origin of the universe, giving it important cosmic significance.
