Sniper Elite III, released in 2014, left mixed impressions. The game had good potential, but the developers were prevented from fully realizing it by releasing it on two generations of consoles at once. For a project about a sniper, shooting from a rifle seemed inconvenient – primarily the locations themselves, which were poorly suited for long-range attacks, interfered. Often, you had to crawl around the maps and eliminate enemies with a pistol, not a rifle. Therefore, fans expected real improvements from the fourth part – and this time the developers did not disappoint: they managed to create, without exaggeration, the best game in the series.

Launching the game solely for the plot is still pointless. As before, cutscenes and other videos can be safely skipped in order to quickly get to the next mission. The main character is again Karl Fairburne – a professional sniper, sapper and simply a jack of all trades, capable of blowing up a tank in a couple of shots. In the third part, he went to Africa, and now fate brings him to war-torn Italy. The goal is to destroy a superweapon that the Nazis can use to tip the scales of World War II in their favor. The developers tried to give the story more depth, but it is still impossible to get particularly carried away by what is happening on the screen. The characters look cardboard and predictable, and the emotions on their faces evoke laughter rather than sympathy. Perhaps someday, by the seventh or eighth part of the series, we will wait for a decent script – but looking at the general focus of the game, it is hard to believe in it. In the end, Carl single-handedly kills hundreds of soldiers and manages to remain unnoticed. How does this fit with the real history of World War II?
But there is good news. The limitations of previous consoles are gone, so the developers have gone all out: the maps have become huge, much larger than the African levels from Sniper Elite III. And they are not just big, but also diverse – forests, snowy expanses, sunny streets of Italian towns. Before each mission, Carl communicates with allies, takes on additional tasks and sets off on a journey, where the player is given complete freedom of action. There are only eight main missions in the campaign, and at first this number seems ridiculous. But don’t rush to conclusions: taking into account side objectives, each mission can take from an hour to an hour and a half, especially if you play stealthily, avoiding alarms and cleverly hiding from enemies. If earlier, enemies, having noticed Karl, would organize a raid all over the area, now you can simply slip away to the other end of the map and continue the mission without unnecessary noise.
Large maps are also great for using a sniper rifle. Finding a secluded place – be it a tower, an attic or just a hill – is easy. And if you can’t find anything, you can simply hide in the bushes. From any position, a couple of targets will definitely appear in front of you. At standard difficulty levels, aiming and hitting enemies becomes so easy and enjoyable that shots, accompanied by spectacular X-Ray animation, will delight you for many hours. Constant movement, searching for convenient points and careful work from cover are especially exciting in co-op. One player tracks enemies through binoculars, the other eliminates them. You can mark not only soldiers, but also equipment or explosive objects – and no one forbids you to set a small trap by dropping something heavy on the enemy’s head. In addition, the fourth part finally fixed the annoying bug of the co-op: now both players see a spectacular X-Ray animation with each beautiful hit, and not a couple of times during the entire campaign, as it was before.

To make life easier for snipers and make the gameplay a little more enjoyable, the developers equipped the main character with special subsonic cartridges. These cartridges muffle the sound of a shot so much that almost no one hears it. An excellent option for situations when there is complete silence around, and the slightest clap can attract unnecessary attention. Thanks to them, you can quietly eliminate enemies without attracting the attention of the entire area. However, the old methods of remaining unnoticed have not disappeared: you can still hide behind the roar of working generators or time your shot to coincide with the roar of a flying plane to mask the sound. Such opportunities significantly simplify the life of a shadow hunter, although you should not completely relax – no one has canceled the stretched tripwires on the approaches to the position. You never know where exactly the enemy will decide to sneak up from. Moreover, opponents, especially at high difficulty levels, know how to act unexpectedly. Even one careless shot without a silencer can turn into big problems: a patrol immediately responds to the noise, goes on reconnaissance and begins actively combing the area. And if you are spotted, get ready for alarm and a new wave of soldiers.
Although the artificial intelligence of enemies can hardly be called exemplary – they often act illogically, can literally walk past a corpse at point-blank range or forget about it a minute later – nevertheless, they try to avoid dangerous places and actively comb the territory. Within the framework of Sniper Elite, this looks quite organic: the player has to be attentive, plan their actions and try to eliminate witnesses as quietly as possible. And if at standard levels you can still afford to miss, then in the “Authentic” mode any mistake is very expensive. In this mode, the interface is completely removed: there is no map with enemy designations, no ammunition indicators, not even hints about health status. Each reload requires a thoughtful approach, because the cartridges in a partially used magazine are lost. The game becomes much more difficult and interesting: you have to really carefully approach the choice of weapons, evaluate characteristics such as shooting stability, sight magnification and recoil. What seems unimportant on normal difficulty turns into a question of survival here. Before starting such a test, it is worth preparing thoroughly: study the maps, remember the patrol routes and think over alternate escape routes.
Once the main campaign is completed up and down, the “Survival” mode comes into play. Everything is simple and clear here: a team of four Karls holds the line, protecting boxes with supplies from new waves of advancing Nazis. In the event of a serious injury, comrades can come to the rescue, and a successful defense brings a decent amount of experience. This experience can then be spent on unlocking useful skills that will come in handy in the main story campaign. For example, the skill of increased ammo collection from corpses becomes indispensable when completing the game on a high difficulty. Of course, “Survival” will not offer anything radically new for those familiar with the series – the mechanics have remained the same – but as a way to warm up before serious tasks or just have a fun evening with friends, it is perfect.
But the multiplayer, alas, is far from being diverse. Among all the available modes, only “Control” stands out. The idea is simple: a radio appears on a huge map, and two teams – red and blue – begin to fight for its capture. As soon as the device is in the hands of one of the teams, the countdown begins. If a team holds the radio for several dozen seconds, it is awarded a point. At the same time, opponents can intercept the radio at any time – and this makes the matches especially tense: often at the very end, someone makes a daring dash and turns the tide of the game in the last seconds. These moments are especially bright and memorable. All other multiplayer modes, unfortunately, are much less exciting: players sit on hills, aim at each other through rifle sights and slowly, sadly wait for their next victim. Without much fire and excitement. Overall, Sniper Elite remains true to itself: quiet hunting, tactical thinking and planning your actions are rewarded, and any mistake can turn into a real disaster. For those who are ready to delve into the nuances of the mechanics and show patience, the game will give many bright moments.
Exploring huge maps is fun. Tracking enemies through binoculars and marking them is fun. Making precise shots and watching the bullet fly in slow motion towards an unsuspecting target is fun again. While in other games open locations are often added just for show, without much meaning, here they really work for the gameplay. In Sniper Elite 4, large maps are designed to make you feel like a real sniper, a hunter in the shadows. And it’s especially cool to play in co-op, where you can think through tactics together with a friend.
