David Roberts, Whitney Houston’s former bodyguard, in a recent interview, spoke about their not-so-professional" relationship. He served as the bodyguard of the American singer-actress from 1988 to 1995, who is, to date, widely recognised as one of the greatest stars in showbiz. In some time, Houston’s former bodyguard will be releasing his memoir, Protecting Whitney.
Ahead of the release of his memoir in January 2025, Roberts sat down for an interview with the Daily Mail, during which he opened up about his time protecting the iconic singer. During the conversation, the 73-year-old former police officer insisted that his utmost priority was always Houston’s safety. But one evening, when the star rested her head on his shoulder, he just wanted to “give up everything" and change the nature of his relationship with her.
“If you cross that line, you lose your objectivity, and that makes it dangerous for the person you’re protecting," said Roberts while talking to the media outlet. He further referenced the 1992 romantic thriller The Bodyguard, featuring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, which is said to be loosely based on the relationship between him and the singer-actress.
He added, “That was why Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner’s character in The Bodyguard) and Rachel Marron (Houston’s character) couldn’t be together — he crossed the line, and that was the end of him in the capacity of what he was employed to do."
Houston’s former bodyguard also discussed that some of the scenes in the 1992 film were exactly how they “actually lived through." “Little details such as Rachel holding onto the back of his shirt to escape crowds of fans. That was how we did it," mentioned Roberts.
David Roberts, who met Houston when she was just 23, now lives in Florida. In the same interview, the former policeman recalled the number of security threats she would receive when he served as her bodyguard. He revealed that these threats were mostly from “men who felt let down, embittered and cheated." “I put myself between her and those threats. ‘You want to get to Whitney? Go ahead and try, see what happens,'" he shared.
Speaking of Whitney Houston, the renowned singer-actress, also known as “The Voice", passed away in 2012 due to accidental drowning, with reports stating heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. She was 48. The iconic singer mostly struggled with drugs for much of her adult life and attended rehab many times. Initially, she began taking drugs as a way to cope with the pressure of fame.
