Richmond Police host successful annual gun buyback event – WWBT

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond Police Department is doing its part to get guns off the streets.
Officers spent Saturday morning at New Life Deliverance Tabernacle, buying back hundreds of guns from Richmond residents.
It’s part of the department’s mission to reduce the accessibility of firearms around the city.
“It’s very important because we want to have a safe way for our citizens to get rid of unwanted guns instead of having them lying around the house where we can have young hands get into them, children get into them,” Richmond Police Department’s Sgt. Tish Cushenberry said.
People got a gift card for each gun that they turned in.
“Each gun is worth $200 or $250, that’s determined on the type of gun it is and that’s cleared by our police personnel. So, you get $200 or $250 depending on the quality of the gun and the quantity that you have,” Sergeant Cushenberry said.
Dan Ryan turned in four firearms, he says, for the safety of children.
“I was concerned about getting rid of it,” he said. “I was in the moving and hauling business, and I accumulated some in my business, so I don’t need them. I don’t use guns,” event attendee Dan Ryan said.
The date for the next gun buyback event has not been set. However, Richmond Police say when that date is set it will be released to the public.
