MacAlpine's Diner reopens after pandemic challenges and perseverance from its loyal owner and customers – FOX 10 News Phoenix

Share

MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain is a staple in Phoenix at 7th and Oak Streets.
The past few years have been met with challenges – including closing down – but this year their doors are open for good.

MacAlpine's has been around since 1929, and they're starting strong in 2025 with help from customers.
A step inside MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain will feel like a step back in time.
"Where else can you walk in the door and it feels like you've been taken back to 1950," said Holly Heizenrader, the daughter of owner Monica Heizenrader.
Homemade pies, 99 flavors of soda and chocolate malts are some of the most popular items on the menu.
Keeping the family-run business afloat meant the Heizenraders had to make sacrifices.
"I sold some of my family's jewelry and some other personal stuff just to keep it going. We love MacAlpine's so much that we just want to save it," said Monica.
Monica says MacAlpine's closed during the pandemic. They reopened in the spring of 2020 but closed after 6 weeks due to staffing challenges.
"I've had people in here crying because they never thought we'd be open again," Monica said.
Since then, Monica and her two daughters have been raising money through a GoFundMe and selling pies to ultimately get to this point: being open 7 days a week.
"I've been seeing a lot of people who used to come in pre-COVID. A lot of familiar faces," said Holly.
"The past week has been just amazing but we're going into the season and people are discovering that we've reopened. So we're really excited to have new customers and old faces come through the door," said Monica.
New faces include the Vasquez family who stopped by to enjoy a Velvet Elvis for the first time.
"I said, 'hey let's go try it out, see if we like it and try something new,'" said Jessica Vasquez.
"I love it in here and I like the vintage. I love everything. I love antiques," said Laura Marie Vasquez.
MacAlpine's is here to stay but they need the community's support.
"We're up and running and we need people to come see us and enjoy this amazing place," Monica said.
MacAlpine's is open for lunch 7 days a week. They're also open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
