Darryl Purvis is a well-known name in the world of stand-up comedy.
“He’s probably the topmost respected comics in the country,” organizer David Green said. “He’s originally from Nova Scotia, but he’s lived in New York, he’s lived in L.A., he’s lived in San Francisco. He’s done comedy all over the world. He’s just one of the best.”
This has included several stops in Niagara, where he has performed at the grand opening of the now closed Showtime comedy club in St. Catharines and more recently a New Year’s Eve headlining gig at the Spotlight Comedy club, which opened in the same spot on St. Paul Street in downtown St. Catharines where Showtime was located.
And now Purvis will be back in Niagara on Feb. 22, when he headlines Comedy Night in Pelham at the Meridian Community Centre.
“He’s just, he’s just a very, very likeable guy, too.” Green said. “He’s not going to be swearing and causing controversy.”
Also on the bill are Rhiannon Archer, Rebecca Hardy and Ben McKay.
“I’ve known her for as long as I’ve been in comedy,” Green said of Archer. “She’s done all the big comedy festivals— the Winnipeg Comedy Festival shows on CBC. She’s hilarious.”
Green is looking forward to seeing how Hardy handles the next steps in her comedy career.
“I’ve known Rebecca for many years,” Green said, adding that comedy is only part of the St. Catharines woman’s artistic skill set. “She’s a player, stand-up, performing musician, improviser, and just watching how she’s progressed over the years and how she’s killing it with crowds everywhere I’m excited to see her in front of a big crowd.”
As for McKay, Green said he had heard good things about him, but it wasn’t until last year that the pair crossed paths.
“We did a fundraiser for Community Care (of St. Catharines and Thorold) last year, and we had a comic who couldn’t make it at the last minute, and somebody suggested Ben. He came down and, absolutely, he was the funniest guy on all show. Absolutely crushed it.”
