The Pico and the Pico W are very similar and, with the exception of anything that uses the built-in LED, all of the programs presented so far work on both models. The important difference between them is that the Pico W has additional hardware that enables it to use WiFi. From the programming point of view, however, the task is to learn how to use the new WiFi driver and the LwIP library that provides higher-level networking. This is made more difficult than need be by the inadequate documentation provided for both. This will probably improve over time.
The Pico W has additional libraries to make it possible to work with the WiFi hardware without having to work at the level of the SPI interface. You can think of these libraries as forming a set of levels. The lowest level is the cyw43_driver which provides an interface to the hardware via the SPI interface. In most cases you can ignore the functions in this module apart from the ones concerned with scanning for access points and power management.
The pico_cyw43_arch library provides higher-level functions mostly concerned with setting up the WiFi and making connections. This is documented and is a good place to start.
The pico_lwip is a set of wrapper functions around the LwIP open source IP stack. This has been ported to the Pico and works with IP via the WiFi drivers. There is almost no documentation of pico_lwip but the original LwIP project is fully, if not particularly clearly, documented.
The WiFi hardware needs periodic attention and when used with an operating system this is usually taken care of by multithreading, but the Pico doesn’t have an operating system unless you install one. The pico_cyw43_arch library provides three different ways of achieving the regular attention that the hardware needs. The first relies on polling, the second uses interrupts and the third makes use of the threads provided by the FreeRTOS operating system.
The mode used depends on which library you link to in CMakeLists.txt. There are three choices, the first being pico_cyw43_arch_lwip_poll. Using this library the client program has to call cyw43_arch_poll() every so often to allow it to run the WiFi software so that it can call callbacks and generally move data. This is a very simple arrangement as it is entirely synchronous and there is no danger of a race condition and hence no need for locking of any kind. It has the disadvantage that it is not multi-core nor interrupt-safe. That is, if you are running code on the second core or if you are making use of interrupts, the networking code can be interrupted in ways that corrupt data.
The second choice is, pico_cyw43_arch_lwip_threadsafe_background. In this case there is nothing the client program has to do and the driver and LwIP code is called by an interrupt. This is multi-core and interrupt-safe, but only if you use locking when you call LwIP code. All callbacks are called in interrupt mode. Any code not run by LwIP has to be bracketed by the instructions cyw43_arch_lwip_begin and cyw43_arch_lwip_end. These apply locks which stop interrupts and other cores running the code at the same time. You don’t have to bracket calls to LwIP made within callbacks because these are being run by LwIP, but if you do they have no effect.
While you can use the threadsafe_background mode with freeRTOS, the preferred mode is to use it with pico_cyw43_arch_lwip_sys_freertos, the third library. The freeRTOS operating system adds the ability to run multiple tasks at different levels of priority – it provides a basic “threads” capability. This allows the LwIP software to run independently and in an organized way with your custom code. The installation and use of freeRTOS is a big undertaking and in most cases it is best avoided for simple WiFi applications.
The freeRTOS approach to WiFi is best taken if you want to use freeRTOS to structure your entire application. In the rest of this chapter the examples will use the threadsafe_background mode, but it is easy to convert them to polling mode by adding calls to cyw43_arch_poll(). It is important to notice that you can only use LwIP sockets if you are also using freeRTOS. Without freeRTOS you are limited to the “raw” LwIP APIs.
There is also a mode, set by using the pico_cyw43_arch_none library, which disables WiFi but allows access to the onboard LED. This is what was used in Chapter 2 to flash the onboard LED.

Mega Millions winning numbers 2024: Jackpot nears $1 billion for Christmas Eve drawing – ABC7 New York
NEW YORK (WABC) — A massive prize currently estimated at $944 million ($429.4 million cash) is on tap for the next drawing on Christmas Eve.
The jackpot rolled again after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night – the white balls 2, 20, 51, 56 and 67, plus the gold Mega Ball 19.
If won at that level, it would be the largest prize ever won in December and the seventh largest in Mega Millions history!
Thirteen Mega Millions jackpots have been won during December since the game began in 2002. Three were won in the days after Christmas, while the other 10 were won before Christmas. There has never been a jackpot win on Christmas Day, although over the years drawings have been conducted on Christmas six times – in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2020.
The Mega Millions jackpot was last won at $810 million in Texas on September 10.
Before that September 10 prize in the Lone Star State, the Mega Millions jackpot was won only twice earlier this year. A $552 million windfall was awarded to an Illinois online player on June 4, and a whopping $1.128 billion prize still awaits a ticket-holder in New Jersey; no one has yet come forward to claim that jackpot from March 26. If not claimed, this ticket will expire on March 26, 2025, and the unpaid prize will revert back to each participating Mega Millions jurisdiction.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350, according to Mega Millions.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 for one play.

Key Points
One of the prominent stocks driven by artificial intelligence (AI) is Palantir Technologies (PLTR 8.54%). From a low of around $6 per share at the height of the 2022 bear market, the SaaS stock‘s AI tools have driven a more than 12-fold gain in the stock in two years.
That may lead to questions of whether that can continue in 2025. Ultimately, one cannot predict what will happen to Palantir over the next year. Still, looking at the state of the business and its financials could offer insight into whether they should expect the bull run to continue, or whether they should sell the stock and lock in gains.
The current catalyst for Palantir stock hinges on AI-driven productivity gains.
Indeed, investors should first understand Palantir’s platforms have long depended on AI. Both Gotham and Foundry have applied this technology since well before investors had any understanding of it.
However, it reached a new level upon releasing its generative AI-driven Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) in 2023. Palantir introduced this technology to clients through AIP boot camps soon after, yielding massive productivity gains for its users.
On the Q3 2024 earnings call, Palantir highlighted how an equipment rental company increased its average revenue retention (ARR) 12-fold. The gains highlighted by the product led customers from a variety of industries to sign seven-figure deals with Palantir.
On the government side of the business, it reported its strongest sequential growth in 15 quarters. It credited TITAN, the Army’s next-generation intelligence ground station, for much of this growth. The company also mentioned the benefits of its Maven Smart System, which took what was a 2,000-person targeting cell and matched its performance with just 20 people.
Nonetheless, the main question for investors is how that translates into financial gains for Palantir. One has to wonder whether the exuberance is overly positive. Indeed, quarterly revenue growth has improved to 30% year over year. In comparison, its revenue of $2 billion for the first nine months of 2024 grew by 26% yearly.
During that time, the company’s operating expenses grew by only 9%. That allowed its net income attributable to stockholders in the first three quarters of the year to rise to $383 million, increasing 229% compared to the same period in 2023.
With an improved performance, Palantir raised revenue guidance for 2024 to just over $2.8 billion, up from the $2.75 billion range in the previous quarter. If that forecast holds, the revenue growth rate will hold at 26%.
Unfortunately for potential investors, these gains are likely baked into its stock price — and then some. This is not just because the stock is up by the aforementioned 12-fold gain in two years, or the approximate 300% rise over the last 12 months.
Instead, this is more likely a valuation call. Its trailing P/E ratio is about 368, which may not be representative of the stock’s value.
Nonetheless, with the trailing price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 67 and a forward sales multiple of 60, the stock shows clear signs of overvaluation. That sales multiple prices Palantir stock for perfection, indicating it could sell off at the first sign of less-than-ideal growth rates.
Given Palantir’s rise over the last 12 years, investors should not expect the increases to continue in 2025.
Admittedly, anything is possible with a cutting-edge AI stock like Palantir, and investors often choose to ignore high valuations when they see growth potential.
Nonetheless, investors take a tremendous risk when paying 60 times forward sales, no matter the long-term growth prospects. Such levels can lead those who are otherwise Palantir stock bulls to fear a significant retrenchment and sell, making buying the stock a highly risky prospect right now.
Indeed, the productivity gains Palantir’s software offers likely mean its growth story will not end here. However, with so much of its forecast growth already priced into the stock, investors should probably keep Palantir on a watch list rather than a buy list at this time.

Crypto Analyst Predicts Incoming Bitcoin Parabolic Rally, Says BTC at Point Where Things Get Exciting – The Daily Hodl
An analyst who continues to build a following with macro crypto calls believes Bitcoin (BTC) is almost ready to enter the parabolic stage of its market cycle.
Pseudonymous analyst TechDev tells his 490,300 followers on the social media platform X that Bitcoin is flashing technical signals that preceded steep rallies in the past.
The trader shares a chart suggesting that Bitcoin has breached the upper range of its Bollinger Bands in the two-month time frame after spending about two years recovering from a bear market bottom.
Traders use Bollinger Bands to identify potential periods of volatility expansion and determine whether an asset is overbought or oversold.
TechDev’s chart also suggests that the two signals were present during the 2016 and 2020 market cycles – just before BTC ignited parabolic surges.
“This is where things have gotten exciting.”
Looking at BTC from a different perspective, TechDev says Bitcoin is in the early stages of a parabolic ascent based on the crypto king’s logarithmic moving average convergence divergence (LMACD) indicator. The LMACD indicator is designed to reveal changes in an asset’s trend, strength and momentum.
“Paying attention to the high time frames (HTFs) offers the best chance to trade the cycles.
$30,000 was not the top, because HTF expansion had not ended.
$50,000 was not the top, because HTF expansion had not ended.
$70,000 was not the top, because HTF expansion had not ended.
$90,000 was not the top, because HTF expansion had not ended.
And HTF expansion still has not ended.”
Based on the trader’s chart, he seems to suggest that Bitcoin will not witness a cycle top until the LMACD on the two-month chart hits its resistance at 0.12. BTC’s LMACD appears to be currently hovering at 0.04.
At time of writing, Bitcoin is trading for $97,274.

U.S. Marines in a communications shop played a little prank on naive young guys who arrived, right out of bootcamp, at Camp Pendleton many years ago.
Our World War II-era radios had big glass tubes that broke or burned out often, so every private or Pfc spent some time running around Southern California to different supply shacks with a clipboard full of requisitions. If a kid looked young and innocent enough, the comms sergeant would send him out in search of some fallopian tubes.
The joke was, company supply would say, “Awww man, fallopians — maybe you should try battalion supply,” then battalion would say those are handled at division level, division would send the guy to regiment and so on. Pretty soon, our gullible naif would be filling out a form asking Washington to send us a big batch of fallopian tubes.
I don’t know how many young Marines fell for it. But when they sent me, I jumped in a Jeep and went to the camp PX to read comic books and drink milkshakes all day.
Then I went back to the radio shack and acted all chagrined. Awww, you guys…
The fallopian trick worked because the schools in those days taught nothing about human reproduction. We knew the crude terms for various activities and bodily attractions; we just didn’t get any factual or biology-based stuff in the classroom.
The Marine Corps probably replaced those big glass tubes with some kind of chips long ago, and the old salts surely have clever new hoaxes for recruits.
Maybe in a few years they can bring back the fallopian fakery — at least for Marines from Florida.
Our Department of Education, complying with legislative edicts, is yielding to the Victorian prudery of pressure groups like Moms for Liberty. The department has decreed that sex-education curriculums in public schools should avoid, as much as possible, discussion of what used to be blushingly called “the facts of life.”
The idea, often cited by Gov. Ron DeSantis, is that the state should educate, not indoctrinate. Therefore, instruction regarding human reproduction should start with abstinence and … well, it should pretty much end there, too. It’s a lofty ideal and scientifically accurate insofar as abstinence works every time it’s used.
Only trouble is, going back to the time of Adam and Eve, it isn’t abstinence that’s failed — it’s trying to abstain that a lot of people can’t quite manage.
“A state government should not be emphasizing or encouraging sexual activity among children or minors, and is therefore right to emphasize abstinence,” a Department of Education official told the Associated Press.
But that’s like saying learning about Beethoven will tempt children to write symphonies, or studying politicians will produce a generation of shameless liars. Remembering our own teens, we can safely assume middle- and high-school kids are already aware of this stuff, with no “emphasizing or encouraging” by teachers.
It would be nice if we could keep our kids blissfully innocent well into adulthood. But we can’t.
What bothers the parental pressure groups and Republican legislators, really, is that instruction about sex will get into moral issues and acts that make some folks blush. If anybody really must mention homosexuality, transgender matters or abortion, they want it framed as something shameful and perverse — y’know, the right kind of indoctrination.
Is it better for young people to get information in the classroom, or have attitudes shaped by TV situation comedies or — heaven forfend — the internet? Education is education, even when it makes us uncomfortable, even when we wish we didn’t have to talk about things.
When my son was in fourth grade, there was a “Newspapers in Education” program that provided copies of our paper to the schools every morning. I offered to get my kid’s class signed up, and his teacher was delighted — but asked that we wait until President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky were off the front page.
OK, we can keep it age appropriate. Fourth graders don’t need the same curriculum high schoolers will use. But any education is better than graduating high school thinking fallopian tubes are part of an old-time radio.
