XRP trading volumes on South Korea’s biggest crypto exchanges have overtaken those of bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) in a sign of flurried interest that often precedes price volatility.
The cryptocurrency market continues to fall, losing some of its significant growth since the beginning of the year. Its capitalisation fell a further 1.4% to $3.23 trillion, matching the lows of the last week and a half. An attempt to stabilise on Monday failed amid a cautious mood in equity markets. It is too early to talk of a complete victory for the bears; rather, the bulls have not yet received any fresh impetus for buying from external factors.
Crypto market experienced higher adoption and inflow of institutional capital in 2024. Experts predict the trends to look forward to in 2025, as the market matures and the Bitcoin bull run continues.

Bitcoin (BTC) price hovers around $97,000 on Friday, erasing most of the gains from earlier this week, as the largest cryptocurrency missed the so-called Santa Claus rally, the increase in prices prior to and immediately following Christmas Day.
A record-breaking $18 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum options expire today, sparking anticipation of sharp market moves and potential volatility.
Crypto.com launches a US trust company to offer digital asset custody services, marking a major step in its North American expansion strategy.
The global cryptocurrency market cap shrank by $500 billion after the Federal Reserve's hawkish statements on December 17. Amid the market crash, Bitcoin price declined 7.2% last week, recording its first weekly timeframe loss since Donald Trump’s re-election.
Bitcoin price has surged more than 140% in 2024, reaching the $100K milestone in early December. The rally was driven by the launch of Bitcoin Spot ETFs in January and the reduced supply following the fourth halving event in April.

What do Fort Worth’s major hospitals want from Texas lawmakers? Here’s their wish list – KERA News

As Tarrant County lawmakers prepare to kick off the Texas legislative session Jan. 14, Fort Worth Report journalists are exploring the policies set to be reshaped in Austin. Click here for more legislative coverage.
As vice president of government relations at JPS Health Network, Ashlea Quinonez knows she has a responsibility to build relationships with Texas legislators.
By doing so, she’s able to advocate for the Tarrant County hospital district and its needs.
“I want them to know about JPS. I want them to know the incredible role we have in serving their community,” she previously told the Report.
In the coming weeks, she and other Tarrant County health system representatives will focus their efforts on Austin as Texas lawmakers convene for the 89th legislative session, which will run from Jan. 14 to June 2.
Stephen Love, president and CEO of the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council, said North Texas hospitals will work with state lawmakers in a “bipartisan way to address health care delivery and do everything we can to improve the delivery system and outcomes for patients.”
The Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council is made up of 90 North Texas hospitals that unite to advance health care in the region.
Medical City Fort Worth declined to comment on the hospital’s legislative priorities. A spokesperson with UT Southwestern Medical Center said the state agency doesn’t comment or take positions on legislative issues. Baylor Scott & White Health did not respond to the Report’s request for comment by publication time.
JPS plans to work with lawmakers in hopes of advancing investments into health care workforce programs. This includes supporting programs that grow the workforce pipeline, policies that enhance workforce safety and retention, and additional funding for health professional education and training.
During the most recent legislative session in 2023, state lawmakers unanimously approved the passage of Senate Bill 25 to create new scholarships for nursing students. JPS is hoping to see further investment to support that program, Quinonez said.
“Last session, the state passed the bill, but they didn’t appropriate any money to the bill. We will be going back this session knowing they are supportive of the different grant programs that have been proposed,” she told the JPS board of managers during a Nov. 14 meeting.
The hospital district will also advocate for stronger support for behavioral health services. That includes an increase in the Medicaid reimbursement rate for services, support for outpatient programs, and continued investment in mental health workforce and telehealth.
The Tarrant County Commissioners Court recently passed a resolution calling on lawmakers to establish and fund a new state psychiatric hospital in the county to “fill a critical gap.” The county’s previous proposal failed in the 2023 legislative session, according to KERA News.
Tarrant County is the largest county in the state without a mental health facility.
“There has been a lot of investment at the state level the last four to six years on behavioral health programs of all kinds, but we have a lot of work left to do,” Quinonez said.
JPS officials are also seeking to maintain stable, equitable hospital funding that preserves general revenue and upholds its trauma center. The hospital district operates one of two Level 1 trauma centers in Tarrant County.
“All of these priorities fall in line with our network-wide priorities of access, financial stability and workforce,” Quinonez said.
David Tesmer, chief community and public policy officer for Texas Health Resources, echoed JPS priorities, adding there is a need for more insured Texans through Medicaid and other coverage expansion.
Roughly 18.2% of Tarrant County’s population is uninsured. Texas reported more residents without health insurance than any other state in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available.
“We need to find ways to increase the number of Texans with affordable and comprehensive health insurance,” Tesmer said. “We’re not just talking about the health and welfare of individuals, but you’re also talking about impacting the economic vitality of Texas.”
Cook Children’s, the Fort Worth-based pediatric health care system, plans to continue to advocate for the health and well-being of children and families in North Texas.
Kim Brown, spokesperson for Cook Children’s, said the pediatric health system’s primary focus remains ensuring that “families have the freedom to choose a local, community-based nonprofit like Cook Children’s Health Plan for their health care coverage.”
Since March, Cook Children’s has been in a fight with Texas Health and Human Services over the future of its health care plan, which offers coverage to more than 125,000 families in the Tarrant County area.
The state agency’s $116 billion Medicaid contract proposal would drop the Cook Children’s Health Plan, alongside the Driscoll Health Plan in South Texas and the Texas Children’s Health Plan in the Houston area, from Medicaid STAR and CHIP plans starting in September 2025.
Following a lawsuit and temporary restraining order, officials with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission agreed to delay signing new Medicaid contracts until June 2025, giving state lawmakers the opportunity to weigh in on the proposal during the legislative session.
Cook Children’s has previously celebrated the agreement by stating that the motion will allow for all parties to come together “to find a solution that best supports families and communities.” Officials have criticized the state’s selection process as “deeply flawed” for failing to give preference to health plans with successful track records and giving an unfair advantage to one of the winning bidders.
“We will work closely with legislators to support the correction of the procurement process for the Medicaid STAR and Children’s Health Insurance Program,” Brown said in a statement.

Iowa law going into effect will heavily tax glass, metal smoking devices: Local glass makers respond – WQAD Moline

MUSCATINE, Iowa — In just a few days, an Iowa law taxing glass and metal smoking pipes will go into effect.
It adds a 40% tax to glass and metal smoking devices and requires retailers to buy a $1,500 permit every year. They also need a tobacco license and have to conceal devices from anyone under 21. Money from the tax and licenses goes to specialty courts and diversion programs. Those are intended to help those struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues.
RELATED: New Iowa laws going into effect on Jan. 1, 2025
One business facing those changes is Oxy Glass Art in Muscatine. Run by husband and wife team Timmie and Torie DePauw out of their home studio, they’ve branched out into creating all kinds of pieces in the last year. That includes memorial pieces, jewelry and ornaments.
“The pipes are still like 75% of our business,” Torie said.
They sell at craft fairs on both sides of the river and to local smoke shops. But in the New Year, that Iowa law will make their business more expensive to run.
“For any small business it’s just another big bill on top of already being kind of hit from being taxed for everything,” Timmie said.
The DePauws said larger shops sell imported products at a fraction of the cost, meaning those customers pay a smaller tax.
“People are not gonna pay that when it’s convenient just to go to Illinois,” Torie said.
She said eating the cost of the tax would make it too expensive to do business.
In preparation for the new law, they said they’ll apply for the right permits and sell where they can.
“The bill as I understand it does not attack wholesaling, so as we go into the New Year, we plan on continuing to sell art as normal, applying for the license, and wholesaling our glass to the shops as normal for now,” Torie said.
She asks those who disagree with the law to write to their state senator.
“All that we really have control over is spreading the word and writing to the people that are in charge,” Torie said.
State Sen, Dan Dawson from Council Bluffs sponsored the bill. In a 2021 Des Moines Register article, he’s quoted saying glass pipes are primarily used for drugs like methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine. The DePauws said people don’t typically buy handmade glass pipes for hard drugs.

Healing with herbs – Detroit Lakes Tribune

DETROIT LAKES — In the summer of 2023, Danika Leitheiser, a long-time Detroit Lakes artist known for projects like her Kiddie Land prints and her “ever-evolving” creativity, decided to explore gardening with a specific goal in mind.
“I wanted to grow plants that were useful,” she said. “I didn’t just want flowers.”
Her early gardening efforts included herbs and lavender. Over time, Leitheiser found herself drawn into the world of herbalism, exploring how natural properties can enhance and support the body’s systems.
Leitheiser said the craft of herbalism is complex and, much like her art, always evolving.
“I’d be learning about Hawthorne berry or mugwort and all the different benefits of that one herb. And I’d be like, ‘I need to put that in that remedy,’” she said. “And now I have this huge cupboard full of simples, which is … every bottle is one herb.”
Leitheiser discovered tincturing with the desire to help people heal. Tinctures are concentrated liquid extracts of herbs, created by soaking plant materials — such as leaves, flowers, seeds or roots — in a solvent like alcohol or vinegar to draw out their medicinal compounds. This traditional method is a cornerstone of herbalism.
Leitheiser found tinctures especially effective and noted that other extraction methods, such as using oil or water, are also common in herbal practices.
“There are all these different ways of making preparations,” she said. “Each preparation extracts different medicinal constituents out of the herbs.”
As her interest in the craft grew, Leitheiser began exploring how these tinctures could be combined to address specific health concerns and individual needs.
“I (learned) more about this herbal stuff and I wanted to see what else I can do with these tinctures I have,” she said. “I could mix them together to make different formulas for very specific ailments and people’s body types. And that’s when I realized that I really wanted to share it somehow.”
Driven by a desire to share her knowledge, Leitheiser created a Facebook group, “The Cupboard,” in the fall of 2023 for those interested in learning about herbal remedies and sharing their experiences. There, Leitheiser shares recipes for teas, ciders and pet remedies, offers consultations, and provides various other premade remedies.
One of Leitheiser’s motivations for exploring herbalism was to help support her daughter, who has epilepsy.
“I was doing a lot of learning on how I could help her and the root causes and everything,” she said.
Leitheiser describes herbal remedies as a holistic approach that can complement Western medicine, offering supportive options for well-being.
“Herbalists have a responsibility to know if there’s contraindications with an herb and a certain medication,” she said. “In my consultation sheets that I’ve developed, I ask a bunch of questions and I figure out exactly how that person’s body works, the energetics of their body. It’s a very, very personal and subjective form of healing.”
Leitheiser said that anyone interested in learning more about herbalism and herbal remedies can join the Facebook group and ask questions.

“This is for everybody,” Leitheiser said. “It’s the peoples’ medicine.”

Crypto Price Predictions 2025: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP And New Altcoins – FinanceFeeds

As we say farewell to 2024, traders are looking ahead to what could be the most bullish year for the cryptocurrency industry ever.
Excitement is high about the potential for top cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP. Meanwhile, traders seeking to maximize their gains are considering new altcoins like Best Wallet token and Solaxy. Let’s look at how far they could go.
Prominent asset manager VanEck suggests that Bitcoin could reach $180K in 2025, peaking in Q4.
VanEck suggests that BTC will hit a mid-term peak in Q1 of 2025, followed by a 30% retracement and subsequent recovery to $180K.
crypto bull market
However, other asset managers are even more hopeful about BTC’s potential. Charles Schwab representatives say that Bitcoin could reach $1 million if the United States is to implement a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
From its current price of $94K, VanEck’s prediction of Bitcoin reaching $180K equates to a 91% gain. However, the asset manager’s outlook for Ethereum is less optimistic.
VanEck suggests that Ethereum will trade at $6K in 2025, an 81% increase from its current valuation of $3.3K.
However, other experts have more optimistic outlooks for ETH in 2025. For instance, Gigantic Rebirth (GCR), a trader known for predicting Luna’s downfall, says that ETH will hit $10K this cycle.
GCR X post
Ali Martinez, a prominent technical analyst with over 100K followers on X, suggests that $8.4 is a “conservative target” for XRP in 2025.
This would set a new record high for the coin and give it a market cap bigger than Ethereum’s.
Should Ethereum reach the $6K target, XRP will still be smaller. Nonetheless, Martinez seems highly optimistic.
He noted that XRP has broken from a “multi-year descending triangle” and even provides an optimistic target of $48.12.
https://twitter.com/ali_charts/status/1865720166514040862
Given that XRP already has a $119 billion market cap and is priced at $2.08, the latter target is highly unlikely. Even if it occurred, demand at such levels would almost certainly be unable to match sell pressure, causing the price to crash back down as quickly as it rose.
Traders seeking gains of that magnitude usually opt for newer altcoins with significantly lower market caps.
According to top industry analysts, the spotlight is on two new presale tokens that could provide up to 100x returns.
Starting with Best Wallet token, it’s the new native cryptocurrency to Best Wallet, the fastest-growing Web3 wallet.
Best Wallet token is currently available to purchase via a token presale, offering investors a chance to get in on the ground floor.
The wallet offers an extensive range of features, including a presale aggregator, a crypto debit card, decentralized spot and derivatives exchanges, a staking aggregator, and more.
The presale aggregator has already provided investors with 10x gains on Pepe Unchained and 50x gains on Catslap.
Holding the $BEST token unlocks benefits like trading fee discounts, higher staking yields, governance rights, and access to promotions on partner projects.
This expansive ecosystem has caught the attention of ClayBro, who told his 134K YouTube subscribers that Best Wallet can 100x in price.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTO3L96SxxM
The presale is ongoing and has raised $6.1 million so far.
Solaxy is another innovative presale project tipped for 100x gains in 2025. The project is building the first Solana layer 2 blockchain, helping solve the network’s congestion issue.
Transaction fees and wait times are creeping up on Solana, and an average of 40% of non-vote transactions are failing. Solaxy will handle some of Solana’s workload on a layer 2 blockchain, making transactions cheaper, faster, and more reliable.
The $SOLX token is also available to buy on the Ethereum blockchain, adding to its growth potential.
Umar Khan recently posted a video on the 99Bitcoins YouTube channel, which boasts over 700K subscribers, suggesting that Solaxy could 100x this cycle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ_hkxKxFS8
Khan highlighted that Solaxy is gaining significant momentum in its presale. Currently, the total raise sits at $7.2 million.

Three 2024 Health Stories That Made Me Smile – Forbes

As 2024 draws to a close, I’d like to highlight three recent health care stories that put a smile on my face.
The first is from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Their transplant surgery team recently completed a record-setting combination of 20 transplant surgeries as part of a “chain” to match compatible donors with appropriate recipients.
For example, suppose Mrs. Adams needed a kidney and her husband Mr. Adams was willing to donate one of his kidneys to her, but he was not a suitable tissue “match.” Similarly, Mrs. Baker needed a kidney and Mr. Baker was willing to donate a kidney, but he was also not match for his wife. An appropriate matching algorithm could find suitable pairings such that Mr. Baker could safely donate his kidney to Mrs. Adams (and Mr. Adams to Mrs. Baker), such that everyone benefited. Neither couple alone could meet their spouse’s needs, but by collaborating, everyone wins.
In the recent Ohio State University example, the surgeons were able to find a “chain” of 10 recipients (and 10 donors) such that each recipient received a compatible kidney from a suitable donor. As expected, everything had to work right for the chain to succeed. The transplant team performed 20 surgeries over two days (10 surgeries to remove the kidneys from the donors and 10 more to place the kidneys in the recipients.) As the medical team noted, “A change in health status as simple as a cold or fever could have broken the exchange.”
Stanford professor Alvin Roth won a Nobel Prize in 2012 for his work in developing matchmaking methods such as used by the organ transplant team. If you want to see a fascinating video featuring husband-and-wife team Drs. Dorry Segev and Sommer Gentry on the mathematics and the biology of transplant matchmaking, I highly recommend this short 21-minute documentary, “The Right Match.”
Kidney transplant in the urology, Nice, France, kidney is taken from a living related donor, the … [+] recipient’s wife The end of the operation to remove the donor’s kidney Stitches. (Photo by: BSIP/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)
The second story came from Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado. The hospital is using specially trained therapy dogs to help medical staff cope with stress and burnout. For example, OB-GYN physician Dr. Kristina Fraser was able to spend a few minutes petting one of the therapy dogs just before tending to an urgent pregnancy delivery. The dogs help the doctors, nurses, and other medical providers enjoy a much-needed “calming moment” before proceeding with the next task.
Heck, I felt calmer just listening to the story.
The full story from NPR’s Morning Edition is available here.
My final feel-good story of 2024 is that we have eradicated “murder hornets” in the US. These giant hornets can be very deadly to humans, and can also wreak enormous damage to honeybee hives. According to Sven Spichiger, pest program manager of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, “I’ve gotta tell you, as an entomologist—I’ve been doing this for over 25 years now, and it is a rare day when the humans actually get to win one against the insects.”
2025 will undoubtedly bring a new round of challenges (and opportunities). But for now, we can look back 2024 and enjoy some health successes. Happy New Year to everyone!
