It takes a ton of cash, effort, and time to train an artificial intelligence model. And relatively little effort to steal it. No need for data theft or leaks.
You can swipe an AI using the model’s electromagnetic “signature”. Researchers from the University of North Carolina described such a technique in an article. They needed an electromagnetic probe, a few pre-prepared open-source artificial intelligence models, and a Google Edge Tensor Processing Unit. The method involves analyzing the electromagnetic radiation emitted during the TPU’s operation.
To decrypt the model’s parameters, the scientists had to compare the electromagnetic field data with the operational data of other AI models running on the same chip. The researchers managed to identify the architecture and specific characteristics known as layer details. This allowed them to create a copy of the AI model with 99.91% accuracy. Physical access to the chip is required for this — for probing and for running other models. The scientists collaborated directly with Google to help the company determine how vulnerable its chips are to attacks.
Attacks targeting side information channels related to device operations aren’t new. But this particular technique of extracting entire model architecture parameters is crucial, as the AI hardware outputs the result in plaintext. Models deployed on physically unprotected servers are vulnerable to it.
Researchers also suggest the possibility of stealing the model from smartphones and other devices. However, their compact design complicates monitoring the electromagnetic field.
