During his final weeks in the White House, President Joe Biden is expected to issue an executive order prohibiting new offshore oil and gas drilling, a move that would help protect areas of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans from President-elect Donald Trump‘s incoming administration.
According to Bloomberg, people familiar with the plans said that Biden is expected to issue the permanent ban within days. The decree is based on the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, a 1953 law that lays out guidelines for oil and gas development in the United States outer continental shelf, and could allow Biden to withdraw large swaths of federal waters from future leasing, per the outlet.
Trump’s first term saw him roll back over 100 environmental regulations during his presidency, and allow the fossil fuel industry to increase carbon, mercury, and methane emissions. During his 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly said he’d be a dictator on day one back in office and vowed to “drill, drill, drill.” He also promised he would eliminate Biden’s key climate policies in the Inflation Reduction Act. 

Last month, the president-elect chose Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Environmental experts previously told Rolling Stone that the former New York Republican lawmaker is expected to pursue Trump’s agenda of repealing countless environmental regulations, potentially leading to billions of tons of noxious greenhouse gases being pumped into the atmosphere. 
As the president races to safeguard climate policies before Trump’s return to office, Biden is set to protect more US lands and waters than any other president. According to the Washington Post, the president also plans to create two new national monuments in California in order to protect roughly 644,000-acres in Southern California near Joshua Tree National Park by barring drilling, mining, and other industrial development in the area. 
Earlier this week, AP reported that the president’s administration said it submitted an application to withdraw 264,000 acres of federal lands in northeastern Nevada’s Ruby Mountains from oil, gas and geothermal leasing for 20 years.

Double-clickjack hack attacks strike.
Hundreds of millions of web users have been warned about a new and dangerous cyber attack that doesn’t care what browser you use—as long as you click twice. Here’s everything you need to know about the double-clickjacking hack attack.
Application security and client-side offensive exploit researcher Paulos Yibelo, with a long history of discovering vulnerabilities and novel security threats, has revealed what could be the new attack methodology with the biggest reach of them all—everyone using a web browser. In a blog post detailing what is referred to as double clickjacking, Yibelo describes in technical detail how hackers can compromise your credentials when you double-click in Chrome, Edge, Safari or just about any web browser client.
This entirely new threat surface is exposed by the fact that hackers can trick the user of almost any website and almost any web browser into clicking something without even realizing they are doing it. It’s a new take on the old clickjacking attack which employed various methods to get users clicking on hidden or otherwise obfuscated web page elements. Clickjacking became obsolete when browser developers built protections into their software to prevent just such an attack. Double clickjacking, however, gets around these protections by adding another layer of attack that relies upon mouse double-click timing to get the victim to validate a login or some other account authorization while thinking they are clicking something else, like a CAPTCHA, that is on the screen at the time. The TL;DR, in other words, is that a new window is opened, and the user is asked to double-click on a prompt while, in the blink of an eye, the hacker is switching context to a different window altogether.
I have approached Apple, Google and Microsoft for a statement.
“While it might sound like a small change,” Yibelo said, double clickjacking “opens the door to new UI manipulation attacks that bypass all known clickjacking protections,” and “seemingly affects almost every website, leading to account takeovers on many major platforms.” Yibelo highlighted the following reasons why the hack attack is so dangerous:
When it comes to attack mitigation, Yibelo said, “I’ve reported this issue to some sites, the results have been mixed. Most have chosen to address it while some have chosen not to.” As for end users, the advice for now has to be don’t click twice if you want to be sure not to fall victim to this new hack attack until in-browser mitigations are available.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Englewood Police Department said it’s noticed an increase in street racing and “speed exhibitions” in the city after local car shows or meet-ups. A new proposed code and administrative changes may create a deterrent.
The big windows at 5280 Furniture Direct give staff a front-row view of Santa Fe Drive.
“You could be here at like two in the afternoon, and then all of a sudden, it roars and you see just two cars going 100-120 miles per hour,” said Gilbert Garcia, the owner of the store.
The store sits right on the border of Denver and Englewood, two communities that have struggled to end street racing along Santa Fe Drive.
“Last year, in June, I was leaving the store. It was around 7, and at 7:15, I got a call, ‘Hey, get back to the store. Somebody hit the store,” Garcia recalls of the latest time a street racer lost control. “The previous owner from here also was driving down this street. Two racers were coming right behind him. He got scared, kind of tried to switch lanes right away, [and] ended up flipping his car right before Hampden.”
Englewood police say part of the problem is struggling to catch racers in the act or prove they broke the law after the fact. It’s typical that as soon as officers receive a call of street racing, the race is over and cars have dissipated by the time officers arrive.
Englewood city leaders are hoping to create a deterrent for “organized races,” something they’re defining as at least two cars racing with at least two spectators.
The new proposed code change would authorize cars used in races to be impounded. Those cars would not be released to their owners if the City of Englewood requests they be forfeited. A new proposed administrative change within the city would allow it to do just that.
“That’s great because somebody that thinks about it twice might save their life or somebody else’s life,” said Garcia.
Drivers do already face a 12-point traffic misdemeanor ticket for street racing in Englewood.
Englewood PD also participates in the Metro Denver Street Racing Working Group, led by the Colorado State Patrol. Their strategy includes contacting organizers of events that may lead to drag races afterward, working with property owners for trespass agreements and other proactive enforcement.
“Drag racing is extremely dangerous for several reasons. The excessive speeds involved greatly reduce a driver’s ability to maintain control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of accidents. Additionally, these events often take place on public roads, putting other motorists and pedestrians at significant risk of injury or harm,” Englewood PD said in a statement to Denver7.
The ordinance goes before Englewood City Council on Jan. 6.
