Margaret Harrison, an adult education instructor, expressed her amazement at her English as a Second Language students, praising their motivation and determination to learn. From left are Juan, Harrison and Jhonattan.
Greenwood County’s Adult Education Center stands out as a vital resource for adult learners, earning recognition for its commitment to helping individuals become productive citizens through education and opportunity.
The center gives adults who have not met high school diploma requirements the opportunity to earn a General Education Diploma (GED).
Open to individuals 16 and older who have officially withdrawn from school, the center enrolls weekly, with students starting classes after completing their orientation session.
Travis Blizzard, director of the center, said enrollment is flexible, allowing students to join or restart the program at any time.
Students who are 16 are encouraged to enroll the semester they turn 17, as they must be at least 17 to take the GED exam.
The center has been named one of the top 10 programs for high school equivalency diploma competition, achieving the highest number of GEDs awarded.
It also received the Young Adult Program Award, recognizing the top 15 programs in the state for measurable gains among students aged 17 to 21.
Additionally, the center earned a Top 10 College and Career Readiness Award for its high participation and was honored with a Top Enrollment Growth Award in the state.
As of December 2024, the center has served 200 students, solidifying its role as a vital resource for adult education in the community.
The GED program covers four subjects — mathematical reasoning, reasoning through language arts, social studies and science — administered as separate tests.
Students begin with the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine their placement, followed by regular progress evaluations to determine their readiness for the remaining tests.
Classes are self-paced and tailored to individual needs, with flexible morning, evening and hybrid learning options.
“This flexibility allows them to attend as much as they possibly can and maximize their growth,” Blizzard said.
The center also offers adults who previously earned 18 to 22 high school credits the chance to complete their high school diploma, by providing another path to success.
Additionally, the center offers English as a Secondary Language (ESL) classes for foreign-born adults to improve their English proficiency and was recognized as one of five districts to receive an ESL performance award.
Margaret Harrison, adult education instructor, shared her admiration for her ESL students, praising their determination and motivation to learn.
“They’re just amazing,” Harrison said.
Alongside communication skills, students also study geography, history and government.
In addition to educational programs, the center provides opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials like Work Keys and WIN, as well as certifications in Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) and manufacturing.
“We have folks that already have a GED and their diploma, so they think we’re not a service for them, but we can be a service for them too,” Blizzard said.
Blizzard expressed that the center aims to be a workforce development program designed to help industries with their various needs.
The center stays connected with students through regular check-ins to provide support and address their individual needs.
“When we show that we really care, the students can feel it, and they start to care themselves,” Peggy Cannon, adult education instructor, said.
Partnerships with organizations such as SC Works Upper Savannah further connect students to resources, while MAT TRANS offers transportation assistance to ensure accessibility.
Serving Greenwood and surrounding areas such as Laurens, Abbeville, Donalds and Newberry, the center attracts students who may work in Greenwood and benefit from its flexible scheduling.
Blizzard joined the center in 2021 after working in various roles within District 50 since 1997.
He shared his teaching experience showed him the challenges many children face, reinforcing the importance of giving them a second chance to succeed.
His connection to adult education is also personal, as his father earned his GED and took great pride in his accomplishment.
Despite rising GED exam costs because of increased fees from the testing company, Blizzard said that the center continues to cover both testing and class fees for its students.
The center follows District 50’s modified calendar while also offering a summer program and a condensed schedule during intersession.
Blizzard expressed enthusiasm for the center’s continued growth and thanked the staff, community and students, emphasizing their essential role in its success.

Brown County Public Health offers radon test kits – NUjournal

NEW ULM — Free radon test kits are available in Brown County while supplies last.
Test kits can be picked up at the Brown County Public Health office, 1117 Center St. and at Sleepy Eye, Springfield and Comfrey City Hall.
“We have lots of older homes in Brown County with leaky foundations, sump pump and septic systems,” said Brown County Public Health Director Jaimee Brand.
She said Brown County and surrounding counties have some of the highest radon levels in Minnesota.
In Brown County, over 70% of homes that tested for radon from 2010 to 2020 had elevated levels. Every January, Brown County Public Health, alongside the Minnesota Department of Health, promotes the importance of testing your homes for radon.
Two of five Minnesota homes have dangerous levels of radon, an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that can cause lung cancer.
In Minnesota, the average radon level is over three times higher than the national average, making the need for testing a huge importance. Radon comes through the soil around homes and seeps through sealed cracks in basement floors and walls. If radon is detected in homes, a licensed professional can install a system to reduce radon concentrations. Homes in Minnesota should be tested at least every five years.
If a large amount of radon is present in the home, the radioactive particles from the radon gas are breathed into the lungs. Exposure over long periods can increase the chances to develop lung cancer. More than 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon every year in the United States. Testing is the only way to determine if your home has elevated levels of radon.
About 21,000 people die each year in the United States from lung cancer due to radon exposure. Radon can be reduced with a mitigation system, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
Radon is produced from the natural decay of uranium and radium found in rocks and soil. Radon gas is in the soil. Because soil is porous, radon moves up from the soil and into homes.
Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in smokers. If you smoke, the combined risk of smoking and radon exposure is much higher.
Test kits can also be purchased for $5 through the department of health at www.mn.radon.com.

Watch Kristen Stewart like you’ve never seen her before in first trailer for sci-fi romance Love Me – PinkNews
Kristen Stewart stars in the upcoming film, Love Me. (Bleecker Street)
Kristen Stewart is showing a completely different side to herself in the first trailer for the sci-fi romance film Love Me.
The upcoming movie sees the Love Lies Bleeding star and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun as two robots – with Stewart representing an ocean buoy and Yeun as a satellite orbiting Earth – who fall in love online.
Taking place “in the not-too-distant future, after the end of humanity” the film is set across “billions of years” as Stewart and Yeun’s AIs are depicted analysing YouTube lifestyle content to replicate what they discover to be human behaviour.
The result? Two robots discover what it means to be alive and make a life with each other.
It’s a far cry from Stewart’s other upcoming projects, including her “hard to watch” directorial debut The Chronology of Water, her first-ever TV role as lesbian astronaut and physicist Sally Ride in The Challenger, and the reignition of her infamous vampire themes in Flesh of the Gods.
The official logline reads: “Long after humanity’s extinction, a buoy (Stewart) and a satellite (Yeun) inherit the Earth, and with only the internet as their guide, learn what it means to be alive and in love.”
In an interview with People, directors Sam and Andy Zuchero said: “We wanted to make a movie that would make you feel big and small at the same time.
“It’s the story of two completely new beings—the AI in two machines—who evolve into virtual avatars and then into flesh and blood humans.”
The film marks the first feature for the married team, which sees a combination of animation, live action, animatronics and game engine software to depict the “longest-spanning love story ever told”.

Love Me is set to land in theatres on 31 January 2025.

BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF Sees a Record Single-Day Outflow of $332M – CoinDesk
The largest public fund tracking bitcoin (BTC) recorded its highest outflows on Thursday, nearly one year after going live.
BlackRock’s Nasdaq-listed IBIT, which holds over $53 billion in net assets, saw over $332 million leave the fund on Thursday, according to data source SoSoValue. These exceed a short-held previous record of $188 million in late December.
IBIT has recorded a string of outflows since Dec. 20 for the first time in its history, data shows, ranging from $17 million to as much as Thursday’s figures.
Large outflows can be seen as a lack of confidence in the ETF's strategy, sector, or broader market segment. However, it could also be due to investors rebalancing their portfolios or taking profits, not necessarily a negative outlook on the ETF.
Other ETFs recorded inflows, however, with Bitwise’s BITB taking on $48 million and Fidelity’s FBTC taking in $36 million. Grayscale’s GBTC was the only other ETF with outflows at $23 million.
Bitcoin trades just under $97,000 at writing time, up 1.5% in the past 24 hours.

BRICS+ and the redefinition of global trade in 2025 – ET Edge Insights – ET Edge Insights
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolving global economic landscape, with BRICS+ emerging as a transformative alliance and India positioning itself as a key destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). As 2025 approaches, both developments hold significant potential to reshape global trade dynamics and economic power structures.
India’s FDI Boom: A Driver of Growth
Navigating Global Headwinds
While both BRICS+ and India’s FDI growth signal strong potential, challenges remain. A stronger US dollar and the imposition of new trade barriers could pose risks, particularly for emerging markets like India. However, India’s economic resilience offers optimism. Recent policy changes, such as the Reserve Bank of India’s recognition of Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPIs) exceeding 10% as FDI, are expected to further strengthen foreign inflows and buffer against external shocks.
A Path Forward
As 2025 approaches, BRICS+ and India stand at the forefront of global economic change. BRICS+ must navigate internal complexities and external pressures to realize its vision of a multipolar trade framework. At the same time, India’s FDI momentum offers a clear path for growth, driven by reforms, strategic investments, and a focus on sustainability.
With strategic cooperation, pragmatic policies, and resilience, both BRICS+ and India have the opportunity to reshape the global economic order, unlocking innovation, growth, and opportunities in the years ahead.
