Predictions 2025: Watch for Kimono's Global Momentum and Local Revival – JAPAN Forward

JAPAN Forward
In 2024, I predicted that there would be a lot of attention paid to kimono around the world because of the number of kimono exhibitions that were happening. This is going to continue into 2025.
Although Victoria and Albert’s four-year run of “Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk” will finally close its doors at Dundee in January, it has been an amazingly successful exhibition — and it won’t be the last.
The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford started showing kabuki costumes in December and this exhibition will continue, with alternating outfits, through most of 2025. In the United States, the Museum of Fine Arts at St Petersburg will open “Kimono: The Triumph of Japanese Dress” on March 8.
But interest in the kimono is not confined to outside Japan. There will soon be an announcement about a major exhibition of important historical dress in Tokyo, too.
An unprecedented number of tourists arrived in Japan in 2024. With the weak yen, it is likely that at least as many will arrive in 2025. One of the popular activities for visitors is to dress in a rented kimono and go sightseeing in it. The rental businesses are likely to do good business this year too.
An interesting fact is that Japanese tourists also enjoy this activity. Renting a kimono means that someone will dress you, and so it takes out the stress of both carrying a kimono and being able to dress oneself well. The trend for having graduations in Japanese dress continues. Increasingly not only universities, but high schools are also doing this too.
Before writing this article I went and investigated some of the more fashionable spots in Tokyo: Ginza, Shimokitazawa, and Harajuku, looking at what young people are interested in wearing. Vintage casual wear is all the rage and there seem to be more shops than ever devoted to used clothing.
I was very surprised by the number of these that cater to men rather than women. Men are becoming much more fashion-conscious. One of the attractions of vintage wear is that each item is unique. This makes it unlikely to find someone else wearing the same piece of clothing.
This is also true of kimono. Vintage kimono continue to be very popular partly because of their uniqueness and partly because of their interesting and colorful designs that are unlikely to be found on new garments. Vintage clothing is also often cheaper and is considered by many to be more ethical than buying new.
The Lolita lacy dresses with flowered prints inspired by Victoriana in Harajuku could perhaps be a parallel universe to the floral antique kimono from the Taisho period that continue to be so popular.
Lace kimono have certainly increased in popularity over the last few years. The interesting thing about Harajuku as a district is the mix of high-end brands, new, small brands, and vintage. On the edgy side are the gothic-inspired black items with holes, trailing hems, impossibly thick-soled shoes, and metal accessories.
There is a small, but growing section of the kimono world that also enjoys incorporating this kind of dark look into kimono. Leather belts or corsets, instead of obi, straps, and other kinds of accessories with dark kimono and make-up. Drawing parallels between the worlds of fashion and kimono is informative when thinking about direction.
Fashion sociologist Christopher Breward writes about the importance of fashion in new urban spaces. The mercantile class bought the short-sleeved kosode and flaunted them in Edo in the 17th century and the flaneurs of Paris did the same in the 19th.
Fashion also tends to flow from young women to older women, and from younger women to younger men, with older men being the last group to leave their conventional clothing. It also spreads from large, urban centers and gradually moves out towards outlying spaces.
In 2024, I was invited to speak in Fukuoka, and also to attend a kimono party and do a talk-show in Toyama. In both cases, tickets were sold out. The image of regional centers being very traditional and not interested in new kimono is perhaps becoming outdated. I predict that I will be invited to more events in different parts of Japan in 2025.
Another driver of this interest in kimono in diverse regions could be the fact that these places are becoming more conscious about their own area culture and products. These are increasingly been seen as valuable resources. A vast number of kimono are not produced in urban centers but in outlying areas and a re-evaluation of these textiles is underway.
As the future of fashion looks increasingly about conformity, computer-based designs, and smart textiles, there is a backlash in which individuality, craftsmanship, and tailor-made are being valued.
The kimono made by hand, made to order, and made on old looms are a part of that culture of slow and quality fashion. Expo 2025 in Osaka will give further exposure to kimono and Japanese crafts.
2025 will be an important year for kimono. Jotaro Saito will continue to represent the high-end fashionable side of kimono, bringing pattern and high style to both men and women. The Tokyo brand Rumi Rock will celebrate its 20th year and Robe Japonica its 10th.
I predict that there will be more collaborations between kimono makers and brands and an increase in activity in outlying areas. It is sure to bring some surprises for both makers and wearers and all who love Japanese clothing.

MacAlpine's Diner reopens after pandemic challenges and perseverance from its loyal owner and customers – FOX 10 News Phoenix

Share

MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain is a staple in Phoenix at 7th and Oak Streets.
The past few years have been met with challenges – including closing down – but this year their doors are open for good.

MacAlpine's has been around since 1929, and they're starting strong in 2025 with help from customers.
A step inside MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain will feel like a step back in time.
"Where else can you walk in the door and it feels like you've been taken back to 1950," said Holly Heizenrader, the daughter of owner Monica Heizenrader.
Homemade pies, 99 flavors of soda and chocolate malts are some of the most popular items on the menu.
Keeping the family-run business afloat meant the Heizenraders had to make sacrifices.
"I sold some of my family's jewelry and some other personal stuff just to keep it going. We love MacAlpine's so much that we just want to save it," said Monica.
Monica says MacAlpine's closed during the pandemic. They reopened in the spring of 2020 but closed after 6 weeks due to staffing challenges.
"I've had people in here crying because they never thought we'd be open again," Monica said.
Since then, Monica and her two daughters have been raising money through a GoFundMe and selling pies to ultimately get to this point: being open 7 days a week.
"I've been seeing a lot of people who used to come in pre-COVID. A lot of familiar faces," said Holly.
"The past week has been just amazing but we're going into the season and people are discovering that we've reopened. So we're really excited to have new customers and old faces come through the door," said Monica.
New faces include the Vasquez family who stopped by to enjoy a Velvet Elvis for the first time.
"I said, 'hey let's go try it out, see if we like it and try something new,'" said Jessica Vasquez.
"I love it in here and I like the vintage. I love everything. I love antiques," said Laura Marie Vasquez.
MacAlpine's is here to stay but they need the community's support.
"We're up and running and we need people to come see us and enjoy this amazing place," Monica said.
MacAlpine's is open for lunch 7 days a week. They're also open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.

What's Included in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Gold Edition? – GameGrin

Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver’s upcoming medieval RPG adventure Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is coming out, with pre-orders already open. As the team eyes an early 2025 release date, and loyalists can already purchase their desired edition, we’re taking a gander at what players can expect to get in the Gold Edition available for purchase.
Players will be able to take control of Henry of Skalitz once again as they set on an adventure that continues the narrative from where it left off. The war against Sigismund the Red Fox continues in this entry, as players engage in a bigger, better, and enhanced version of the original experience.
First, we’ll talk a bit about the pre-order bonus that’s going to be available. Those who purchase any edition before the release of the game will receive the Lion’s Crest Bonus Quest, which will be available on day one. Completing this questline will reward players with the Knight Brunswick armour, a legendary set that’ll help you in the war.
image 2025 01 02 100132691
Moving on to the Gold Edition, we’ll talk a bit about the DLC. The original title received 13 DLC, eight of which were paid and five of which were free DLC voice packs with HD quality. Following a similar suit, Kingdom Come: Deliverance does have three confirmed expansions coming. The Gold Edition will feature the Expansion Pass, which will come with the three upcoming expansions, giving players the opportunity to tackle the additional content as it releases. It’s worth noting, however, that this hasn’t been affected by the recent Steam change for the Season Passes, so we don’t have any additional information on it just yet.
Also part of the Expansion Pass is the Shields of Seasons Passing, which gives players the opportunity to customise their shield. This will let you add a hint of “you” to Henry as you venture through 15th-century medieval Europe and change the way you represent yourself during the narrative.
Unique to the Gold Edition, however, is the Gallant Huntsman’s Kit, which will let you dress up as a huntsman during the narrative. Dress the part as you venture out into the world to hunt down Sigismund the Red Fox, dressed appropriately with an outfit and crossbow to boot!
To summarise, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Gold comes with the following:
Writes in her sleep, can you tell?

How advice from mom changed the course of Tucker Wetmore’s life – Rural Radio Network

About Us
CLOSINGS & CANCELLATIONS
You probably know Tucker Wetmore as the country newcomer about to clinch his first #1 hit. But did you know he had a well-decorated athletic career before music?
“I grew up playing sports my entire life. Football, baseball, track,” Tucker tells ABC Audio. “[A] little bit of basketball [as well], but I stopped playing that pretty early on. It wasn’t my forte. I kept getting mono, so I was like, I’m done with basketball.”
“I went to college to play football [and] ended up getting injured,” he shares. “So that was kind of the end of my sports career.”
Having it come to a screeching halt was quite a blow to Tucker. He was down and out, uncertain of what to do next.
“I moved back home and I was super lost. I was like, ‘Ma, I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know what I want to do with my life,’” he recalls.
That’s when his mom came through with words that changed the course of Tucker’s life.
“She was like, ‘Just go sit in front of your piano or pick up your guitar. That was your therapy back in the day.’ So I wrote my first song that night and I never looked back,” he says. “I wrote my first song in 2019, I moved to Nashville in 2020.”
Tucker’s currently #2 and ascending to the summit of the country charts with his debut single, “Wind Up Missin’ You.”
Tucker will open for Thomas Rhett on his Better In Boots tour this summer, with the kickoff show slated for June 5 in Rogers, Arkansas. Tickets are available now at tuckerwetmore.com.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A group is suing Louisville to stop a planned development project at the Urban Government Center.
In the lawsuit, the German-Paristown Neighborhood Association claims the city violated procedures when awarding the project to a developer. The neighborhood association wants to stop any planned demolition of the site off Barrett Avenue and stop any plans to transfer the land to the developers.
Developers have plans to turn the former Urban Government Center into apartments, a hotel, office space, shops, and a parking garage.
