Lions vs. 49ers highlights: Detroit wins, sets up big Week 18 showdown vs. Minnesota – USA TODAY

The Detroit Lions scored on five consecutive drives in the second half to pull away for a 40-34 win over the host San Francisco 49ers on the final “Monday Night Football” matchup of the season.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed 26 of 34 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs had 163 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in a standout night for the offense.
The two offenses combined for 914 yards on 129 plays and zero punts.
Both teams set the tone in the first half and combined for five consecutive touchdown drives to open the game. The first stop of the night was by the 49ers defense late in the second quarter with a turnover on downs deep in the red zone.
The 49ers couldn’t capitalize as kicker Jake Moody missed a 51-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the first half. San Francisco led 21-13 at half, the eight-point gap thanks to a blocked extra point by defensive lineman Maliek Collins.

Detroit scored a game-tying touchdown to open the second half before San Francisco responded in kind. The Lions scored 19 consecutive points, thanks to a pair of Brock Purdy interceptions, to take a 40-28 lead.
Gibbs scored the team’s final points of the night on a 30-yard touchdown run. Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs scored on a 7-yard touchdown run after an injury to Purdy on the final drive of the game to bring it to 40-34 after a missed extra point.
Purdy completed 27 of 35 passes for a career-high 377 yards and three touchdowns in addition to those two turnovers. Rookie wideout Ricky Pearsall was his favorite target of the night with eight catches, 141 yards, and a touchdown.
Detroit (14-2) closes the regular season in a battle for the NFC North title at home against the Minnesota Vikings (14-2). With a win or tie, they’ll take the division title and the No. 1 seed. If they lose, they’re down to the No. 5 seed and will play on the road to open the NFC playoffs.
San Francisco (6-10) wraps up a disappointing regular season on the road against the Arizona Cardinals (7-9). They’re out of playoff contention and looking at a top-15 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy went to the sideline with an injury after a sack on first-and-10 from the Lions’ 35-yard line. Backup Joshua Dobbs came in and led the offense down the field before running it in from seven yards out. Jake Moody’s extra point is wide right and the 49ers cut the Lions’ lead to six with 43 seconds to play.
Brock Purdy took a hard hit from Lions safety Brian Branch on a sack and the 49ers quarterback has come out of the game with less than two minutes to play.
Joshua Dobbs is in at quarterback for the 49ers.
Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs got to the edge and outran the rest of the 49ers defense for a 30-yard touchdown. Jake Bates’ extra point is no good, but the Lions hold a two-score lead with 2:58 to go in the fourth quarter.
After an unnecessary roughness penalty brought the 49ers offense past midfield, quarterback Brock Purdy threw his second interception of the game on the ensuing play. Lions safety Kerby Joseph collected his second interception of the night, his ninth of the season, on a pass intended for Ricky Pearsall.
Detroit’s offense takes over on their own 38-yard line with 7:34 to go in the game.
Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams slipped on third-and-8 from the 49ers’ 24-yard line and Detroit settled for a field goal. Jake Bates knocked it through from 42 yards out for the Lions to push the lead to six points with 10:29 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Lions’ defense got a stop on third-and-10 to force a long field goal. San Francisco kicker Jake Moody missed just left on a 58-yard attempt, his second miss of the night. The Detroit offense will take over at its own 48-yard line with 13:25 to go in the game.
Detroit capitalized on the Brock Purdy interception by driving 43 yards for the go-ahead touchdown from Jared Goff to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jake Bates’ extra point is good and Detroit takes its first lead of the night with 19 seconds left in the third quarter.
Goff went 4 for 6 passing on the drive for 34 yards and the touchdown.
Brock Purdy threw an interception on first-and-10 from his own 33-yard line, but it was called back due to defensive pass interference on Lions’ safety Brian Branch. One play later, Purdy sailed a throw over wide receiver Ricky Pearsall’s hand and Lions safety Kerby Joseph caught it for the first turnover of the game.
Detroit will take over at the 49ers’ 43-yard line with 3:58 to go in the third quarter.
San Francisco edge rusher Nick Bosa got his second sack of the night on third-and-3 to force a long field goal attempt for the Lions. Kicker Jake Bates made it from 57 yards out to cut the 49ers’ lead to four points with 4:25 to go in the third quarter.
The 49ers responded to Detroit’s touchdown drive with one of their own. San Francisco drove 84 yards in just six plays to score on a 5-yard pass from Brock Purdy to wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Jake Moody’s extra point is good as the 49ers are 4-for-4 on red zone trips tonight.
Purdy found wideout Ricky Pearsall for a 39-yard catch and run before tight end George Kittle rumbled for 22 yards to bring the 49ers in the red zone.
The Lions drove 66 yards over 10 plays over five minutes, capped off by a Jared Goff pass to tight end Sam LaPorta for a 6-yard touchdown. Goff rolled out to his right to find wide receiver Tim Patrick for the two-point conversion to tie the game with 9:58 to go in the third quarter.
San Francisco drove into scoring range for a quick few points before halftime but kicker Jake Moody’s 51-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. After the Lions kneeled out the final two seconds of the half, the 49ers hold a 21-13 lead at halftime.
Detroit will receive the second-half kickoff.
Detroit’s offense stayed on the field for fourth-and-3 on the 49ers’ 8-yard line. Quarterback Jared Goff fired a pass to tight end Sam LaPorta, but 49ers cornerback Renardo Green made the play to break up the pass and force a turnover on downs.
San Francisco takes over from the 8-yard line with 1:13 to go in the first half and one timeout.
Detroit’s marched 55 yards in eight plays to get inside the red zone for the second time on the night. The Lions will be facing first-and-10 from the 49ers’ 15-yard line after the two minute warning.
San Francisco’s star edge rusher left the Lions’ previous drive after taking a hit to the head and neck area during a sack. Nick Bosa went to the blue medical tent but was back on the field for the Lions’ current drive.
Two plays after completing a deep shot to rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy scrambled up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown. Jake Moody’s extra point is good and San Francisco has an eight-point lead with 6:13 to go in the half.
Both quarterbacks in this game are yet to throw an incomplete pass. Purdy is now 9-for-9 for 131 yards and two touchdowns passing in addition to three carries for 12 yards and a touchdown.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff found wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for a quick pass on third-and-12 from the 49ers’ 42-yard line but St. Brown flipped it up to Jameson Williams. He ran 41 yards down the right sideline for his second touchdown of the night. Jake Bates’ extra point is good and the Lions make it a one-point game with 10:09 to go in the second quarter.
San Francisco opened the second quarter with another touchdown, this time on a Brock Purdy pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk from 9 yards out. Jake Moody’s extra point is good and the 49ers take an eight-point lead with 14:53 to go in the second quarter.
Purdy went 4-for-4 passing on the drive for 48 yards. As a unit, the 49ers offense went 70 yards on just six plays and took 3:49 off the clock.
San Francisco has reached the red zone once again as the first quarter ends. The 49ers will face first-and-5 from the Lions’ 9-yard line to start the second quarter following an encroachment penalty on Detroit defensive lineman D.J. Reader.
The Lions responded to San Francisco’s opening-drive touchdown with a score of their own, this coming on a 3-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Jameson Williams. San Francisco defensive lineman Jordan Elliott blocked the extra point attempt but linebacker Fred Warner could not run it past the 30-yard line.
Detroit relied on the run game in their opening drive and got 36 yards on seven carries combined from Jahmyr Gibbs, Jermar Jefferson and Williams.
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy fired a pass to rookie wideout Ricky Pearsall for a 3-yard touchdown. Pearsall was initially ruled down at the one-yard line but review showed he crossed the plane with the ball for the touchdown. Jake Moody’s extra point is good and the 49ers take an early lead.
Purdy went 3 for 3 for 34 yards on this drive and made a key conversion with his legs on fourth-and-1 at the Detroit 5-yard line to set up the score. San Francisco went 61 yards in 11 plays for the score.
The 49ers vs. Lions matchup kicks off at 8:15 p.m. (5:15 p.m. PT).
ESPN again is the broadcast home of “Monday Night Football.” The longtime team of Joe Buck (play-by-play) and Troy Aikman (color) will be on the call, with Lisa Salters adding reports from the sideline.

Game time temperatures at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, will be in the mid-50s and there is no chance for precipitation, according to AccuWeather. Temperatures will dip below 50 degrees by the time the game ends.
The Lions still have a shot to play for the division and the No. 1 seed. They’ll need a win in Week 18 to make that happen. Here’s how the division stacks up:
The 49ers won’t have a chance to repeat as NFC West champs this year, as the division has been wrapped up by the Los Angeles Rams. Here’s how the division shakes out:
The first round of the NFL playoffs is the wild-card round, which will take place Jan. 11-13.
Seeds Nos. 2 through 7 in both conferences will face off in one of the six total matchups over the three-day opening round. This year’s playoffs will kick off with two games on Saturday, Jan. 11, continue with three more on Sunday, Jan. 12 and conclude with one game on Monday, Jan. 13.
The Lions have already clinched a playoff berth and will be either the No. 1 seed in the NFC or the No. 5 seed. It all depends on whether they can stave off competition from the Vikings in the race for the NFC North.
Detroit will be the NFC’s No. 1 seed if either of the following scenarios occurs:
Detroit will be the NFC’s No. 5 seed in either of the scenarios below:
There are only two ways for the Lions and Vikings to end up tied in the standings at season’s end. They are as follows:
If the Lions are the NFC’s No. 1 seed, they will get a much-needed first-round bye after which they would play the lowest-remaining seed in the NFC bracket.
If Detroit ends up as the No. 5 seed, it will go on the road to face one of the following three teams:
The 49ers were eliminated from the playoff picture ahead of their Week 16 game against the Dolphins. They failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2020.
San Francisco faced an uphill climb all season, dealing with countless injuries and ultimately succumbing to the dreaded Super Bowl hangover.

Poland has taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months, following Hungary's controversial tenure.
Under the slogan “Security, Europe!”, Poland is taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, marking the start of a six-month rotation for the second time in Poland’s history.
The country in presidency is tasked with guiding the council’s work and representing all member states in negotiations with other EU institutions. The spot rotates among the EU’s 27 member states every six months, with Hungary wrapping up its controversial tenure in December.
Marked by the ongoing war in neighbouring Ukraine and escalating tensions at the Polish-Belarusian border — which Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called an example of “hybrid warfare” — the Polish Presidency will take a broad view of strengthening European security and defence.
This means that Poland “will support activities strengthening European security in all its dimensions: external, internal, information, economic, energy, food and health”, according to the official program of the Polish presidency.
During the EU Presidency, Poland also plans to host over 300 official meetings, 22 informal councils of EU ministers, and about 200 cultural events.
Made up of all heads of state and government of EU member states, the European Council sets the agenda and priorities of the EU, and debates legislation proposed by the EU Commission.
“We are prepared to take over the presidency,” Adam Szłapka, the Minister for European Union Affairs, said in a press conference in December, “but for us it’s also important that Europe speaks our language and notices what’s most important.”
“Nothing is more important today than taking responsibility for our joint security,” he added.
The Polish presidency follows a controversial Hungarian one. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán used his presidency to repeatedly block EU sanctions against Russia amid the war in Ukraine, and tout his controversial “peace mission” for ending the war.
Poland’s rise to the forefront of the European Union also comes at critical point in the country’s domestic politics The rotation is just over a year after the ousting of Poland’s national-conservative Law and Justice government, and only a few months before presidential elections — which many see as a test for Tusk’s Civic Coalition party.
Poland, under the Law and Justice government, was once outlier to what were viewed as shared European values and common interests. The country faced fines and withheld funds for sparring with EU leadership on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights and migration, and for controversial judicial reforms that the EU deemed democratic backsliding.
“We have taken full responsibility for what is happening and will happen in Poland in the coming years,” Tusk, who is decisively more pro-EU than his predecessor, said in a statement given upon Poland’s taking of the presidency.
“What we inherited implores us to make difficult decisions.”

Major Bitcoin Collapse Incoming Over the Next Two Weeks, Says Trader Nicholas Merten – Here Are His Targets – The Daily Hodl

Crypto analyst Nicholas Merten is leaning bearish on Bitcoin (BTC) as the flagship crypto asset hovers around the $94,000 price tag.
In a new video update, the host of DataDash tells his 510,000 YouTube subscribers that he is expecting Bitcoin to undergo a “major collapse” over the coming two weeks.
“Bitcoin is starting to showcase not only really worrying signs with its price action, we are obviously seeing altcoins follow as well. And even macro recessionary indicators starting to flare up in a significant way.”
According to Merten, the 21-day exponential moving average (EMA) – which had previously acted as a support level – is now acting as a resistance zone for the crypto king.
Consequently, the analyst warns that Bitcoin could now plunge below the $80,000 price.
“If we essentially are treating the 21-day [EMA] resistance, we’re looking for our next major moving average pairing as potential support. And the earliest that we’re going to probably reach there is probably the 100-day [EMA] which is down here at around $85,000…
So somewhere in the low $80,000 range. If that doesn’t hold, then we’re likely moving to the 200-day [EMA] which is down at around $76,000.”
Merten goes on to note that a Bitcoin correction would be devastating for altcoins.
“I’m not saying that this is the end of the world here but I am saying that this is a pretty significant correction where we could be seeing, from a top to bottom analysis, probably a 25% to 30% pullback…
That’s not something that would be the end of the world but it’s going to be a pretty bad situation for altcoins.”
Bitcoin is trading at $93,824 at time of writing.

As enterprises embrace hybrid and multicloud environments, they face increasing security challenges. These seven strategies will strengthen cloud security amid evolving threats.
January 1, 2025
By Manikandan Thangaraj, ManageEngine
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, enterprises are increasingly utilizing hybrid environments, complex network architectures, and multicloud infrastructure. With over 72% of organizations using multicloud applications, visibility and context can be a challenge, creating difficulties for security professionals working to block sophisticated threats.
Within such vastly distributed environments, it is important to secure digital assets and prevent attackers from exploiting any security loopholes and cloud misconfigurations. Bad actors are using AI to expand the attack surface and exploit cloud networks; however, there are steps to take to keep these attackers at bay.
First of all, reducing the attack surface does not necessarily mean reducing the number of cloud applications in the enterprise. Moreover, if bad actors are going to use AI to bolster their attacks, it stands to reason that organizations too should use AI in their cloud security strategy. By adopting AI-based behavior profiling, the security operations center can reduce the attack surface, automate workflows within applications, mitigate attacks, and remediate successful attacks.
Related:How to Create a Cyber Security Incident Response Plan
AI tools can facilitate quicker threat detection, investigation, and response. All healthy cloud security postures should utilize ML-based user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA) tools. Such tools effectively identify anomalous behavior across the network, while facilitating rapid investigation of potential threats and automating responses to mitigate and remediate attacks. Ideally, security professionals want to find vulnerabilities before an attack occurs, and such AI tools can help to do just that.
As enterprises continue to move to the cloud, identity security is beginning to complement, and even overtake, endpoint security. Security professionals are increasingly interested in who is behaving anomalously, rather than how, where, or why such behavior is occurring. By mapping cloud activities to users in the network, security personnel can derive contextual data by looking at who accessed which resources, data, and applications.
When a threat occurs in the cloud, it can sometimes be difficult to assess the potential impact across a distributed or multitenant surface. By utilizing a centralized platform, security personnel have access to a response center that can automate workflows by orchestrating with different cloud applications, which in turn reduces the mean time to resolve (MTTR) incidents and threats.
Related:Linux Security in the Cloud Era: Best Practices for Protecting Your Cloud Workloads
By analyzing data from the network and cloud services, security professionals can identify patterns, relationships, and potential threats. It is vital that an enterprise's correlation rules for cloud security data have been designed, tested, and carefully implemented. Such correlation activities can help defense systems find and analyze unusual traffic, anomalous account usage, or unauthorized access to cloud storage.
By correlating access and security logs from cloud applications, security personnel can identify attempts at data exfiltration from the cloud. As a quick example, if a SOC professional is investigating potential customer data exfiltration from a cloud-based CRM tool, he or she would want to correlate the logs of that CRM tool with the logs of other cloud applications, such as email or team communication tools. A correlation could reveal a compromised user account and/or exfiltration of data via the CRM tool.
It's worth highlighting what a danger shadow IT poses. The use of unsanctioned applications across the network — a trend that has risen since the pandemic — leads to security vulnerabilities and potential threats. Security personnel should frequently perform cloud security risk assessments and audits. By taking a bottom-up approach, CISOs can gain visibility into granular components, and then move on to assess the overall security posture of the network.
In case an attack is effective, it's vital to have an incident response plan (IRP), as well as a disaster recovery policy, and policies related to internal and external reporting. Across the globe, incident reporting requirements are becoming stricter, especially in the European Union. As a quick example, the recently enacted NIS 2.0 directive mandates that covered entities now have a mere 24 hours to report a cyberattack after the organization is cognizant of such an attack.
In addition to having an IRP and conducting regular risk assessments, it is also important to conduct penetration tests to ensure you always have access to sensitive data. Moreover, do not neglect to provide employees with security training, implement MFA, and regularly update all security tools.
Lastly, it's worth remembering that cybersecurity is an ongoing process —one that mandates constant attention and an ability to adapt to evolving threats. That said, by implementing these seven practices, organizations can mitigate threats, protect their network, and ensure the safety of all their digital assets.

Alex's (Second) Most Anticipated Game in 2025: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II – Gamereactor UK

Even without the titans that lie later in the year, early 2025 already looks to be one of the most-stacked years we’ve had in quite some time. Civilization VII, Avowed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Monster Hunter: Wilds all release in February, and all of them could have been my (second) most anticipated game of next year, but while I look forward to all of those experiences, one title stands taller than the rest.
That game is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. I only played the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance this year, getting to grips with a trip to medieval Bohemia ahead of jetting off to Prague for a preview of the sequel. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a great game, but it also has its share of clunkiness here and there. In the hours I’ve spent with Kingdom Come: Deliverance II so far, that all appears to have been washed away.
In the same way that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Baldur’s Gate III defined their franchises even though they were sequels, Kingdom Come: Deliverance looks to set the bar high, taking the feedback that Warhorse got from its community and applying it into the new game. The graphics are prettier, the combat is more polished with the introduction of each weapon having its own fighting style, and the quests seem deeper and more intricate than ever.
As it feels like the live-service trend is coming to an end, it feels like the industry is largely still figuring out what the best way to make money is, while Warhorse seems instead focused on carving out its niche in the unique RPGs it is fascinated by. Kingdom Come: Deliverance gets a reputation sometimes as being more of a historical simulator, but even as someone who loves his history, I can say that it’s clearly a game first.
I might still be holding my breath until the end of the year for Rockstar to finally launch Grand Theft Auto VI, but I know that at the beginning of 2025 a great wide world awaits, and good ol’ Henry will be ready to make a name for himself once more.
It’s hard to top GTA VI for the game that excites us most, but early 2025 will give us an RPG experience that is likely to be as exciting as it is immersive.
And it’ll definitely make it, as the game has gone gold.
"60FPS is not out of reach for us."
Henry of Skalitz returns to give us a historical RPG that packs plenty of realism and drama.
The game had planned to release this year, but it’s not that long of a wait to see it early next year.
You’ll also have a chance to play the game at the event.

Borders are places of encounter, joy, and co-creation, according to Eva Moya, Chair of Social Work at the University of Texas, El Paso.
The community of El Paso is one such place, where people enter the United States from Mexico, seeking asylum and opportunity. It’s also a place where human need is high, with food, shelter, and health services in demand among those in the community and recent arrivals.
Stepping into that gap is the Health Outreach Prevention and Education, or HOPE, a collaborative program, run by the University of Texas, El Paso, School of Social Work. The program includes 85 organizations that provide a variety of services, including healthcare, food, housing referrals for people who are unhoused, access to public health department programs, community health workers support for navigating services, and more. The organization also hosts health fairs to connect vulnerable populations to vital care while addressing health disparities in El Paso County.
So far, the program has reached over 1,600 people, offering on-site services and referrals to safety-net services that can improve their health. The program also involves university students training in health fields so they can gain experience with patients.
“We’re adding a dimension of humility and exposure so that the next generation of professionals are better equipped to refer to the individual who is marginalized as an individual who is worthy of dignity and respect,” said Moya.
A $200,000 grant from Direct Relief’s Fund for Health Equity, made possible with support from the AbbVie Foundation, allowed the University of Texas at El Paso School of Social Work to expand the HOPE health fairs to unsheltered and uninsured people across El Paso and beyond.
Since 2021, Direct Relief, through its Fund for Health Equity, has granted more than $50 million to 163 organizations across the U.S.
