A Pharmacist’s View On Cannabis Education For Seniors – Forbes
Staff at Canna Remedies in Ewing, New Jersey welcome customers on the dispensary floor.
An estimated one in five older adults say they’ve used cannabis in the past year, a number that has been steadily climbing in recent years as more and more U.S. states legalize the plant’s use.
But after decades of criminalization, many older adults still have questions about cannabis as a medicine, and whether it can fit into their current health regimens.
Dr. Monica Werkheiser, Pharm D, Head of Operations at Canna Remedies, is one of many medical professionals around the country working to tackle these questions head on, both by offering educational programming and by meeting older adults where they’re at, literally and figuratively.
For Dr. Werkheiser and her team, that’s meant hosting information sessions at community centers and assisted living facilities or other convenient locations, and giving attendees a brief breakdown of cannabis medicine in a familiar context, as well as plenty of time for questions.
“At first I used to go in and just do a presentation, and people would listen, but they kind of phase out at a certain point. There’s only so much information you can take in. Then I tried the opposite, just saying, ‘Who has questions? I’m here.’ Two hours later, I was still answering questions, and realized we had to find a marriage of both.”
“What we’ve found most successful is taking maybe about 15 to 20 minutes to just give a basics of cannabis and then help them relate it back to things they’re familiar with: you know your heart medicine, and it works in your cardiovascular system. You know that you have neurological medicines, like gabapentin and Lyrica, and those work in your central nervous system. So, now we have cannabis, which works in the system called endocannabinoid, and when you can start to relate it to things that they’re familiar with, it becomes an easier conversation.”
“I’ve also noticed they’re happy to bring a pharmacist in, because they feel like they can ask the questions that they’d ask their pharmacists anyway.”
Overall, she said, older adults seem eager to learn about cannabis, and aren’t caught up in the stigmas of the past surrounding the plant.
“I remind myself that the generations that are older now were the people who were there in the ‘60s and ‘70s and had seen it around them, and kind of recognize the changes that have come.”
“We’re not in that generation of ‘reefer madness’ anymore.”
Dr. Monica Werkheiser, Pharm D, Head of Operations at Canna Remedies
Still, some seniors remain a bit hesitant to dive into the world of shopping for cannabis on their own, Dr. Werkheiser said.
“I realize you have to meet people where they’re at, and there’s still a fear of walking into the dispensary,” she said. “Maybe they’re willing to try a product, but there’s still a fear of walking in the door, and that’s why we’ve really gone to those places, to the community centers, to the clubhouse at a 55+ community, to a few assisted living facilities. We even offered delivery, just to see what would make them comfortable.”
Meeting older adults on their home turf has generated a big response so far, Dr. Werkheiser said. The ailments asked about vary, she said, and sometimes she’ll get questions about whether or not cannabis could help reduce the often high number of medications that patients are already on, the side effects of which may require treatment of their own.
“I would say probably the biggest questions we get are about sleep and pain. Sleep is the number one, and that’s where most people feel comfortable starting. But a lot of them do have the drug interaction question, and that’s been surprising to me, how many people are cognizant of the issue of medication interactions.”
In Dr. Werkheiser’s experience, cannabis can indeed be a good option to replace certain medications, particularly for sleep, pain, anxiety, and other common ailments or symptoms among older adults. She said she was also surprised to discover that, anecdotally, cannabis has seemed to be an effective replacement for blood pressure medication in some cases.
“That’s one of the things I’ve found most interesting,” she said. “I had known that obviously cannabis has an effect on blood pressure, and most studies out there talk about blood pressure actually increasing, but that’s with excessive use.”
“What I noticed with our senior population is that they actually had the opposite experience. I would get phone calls pretty frequently from cannabis patients saying that they were feeling dizzy, for example, and your first thought is generally that the patient has had too much [cannabis].”
“But I started to ask them to take their blood pressure at that time, and most of them had dropped below normal. And what we realized was that those people who were calling were on about two to three blood pressure medications, and with cannabis use they had to stop or reduce the strength of those medications because it was too much blood pressure lowering. So that became an interesting factor, and a few of the geriatric doctors started to realize that, too.”
“It’s not something that’s been studied,” Dr. Werkheiser said. “It’s just something that we started to notice as a trend.”
In the new year, she said, she’ll be presenting and bringing along brand reps at events in multiple clubhouses in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where Canna Remedies operates, and even hosting an on-premises session in one of their front lobbies for members of a local VFW.
“And if they have guys who want to talk about cannabis use for PTSD, pains, whatever it may be, you know, we’ll be there. I have other pharmacist friends who’d be more than happy to come down and chat if they needed multiple people, and to offer bilingual services, because I think that’s a very underserved population.”
Dr. Werkheiser added, “I always think back to my own grandparents and what a game-changer cannabis could have been for them in their health struggles, if only somebody could have just said that to them.”
“As long as places will have me, I will continue to go out there. We’ve done everything from online classes to in person, worked with different events. Really, anywhere that they’ll have us to talk about it, of course, we’ll be there.”

How likely is the strategic Bitcoin reserve, and how could it impact Bitcoin's price? – USA TODAY
Thanks to this year’s rally in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), which recently broke through the $100,000 price level, the concept of a strategic Bitcoin reserve has rapidly transformed from an arcane campaign issue into an economic idea worthy of serious consideration. There’s even a piece of legislation, the Bitcoin Act of 2024, that lays out how it might become a reality as soon as next year.
But just how likely is this to occur? And what would be its impact on the price of Bitcoin? Let’s take a closer look.
From a conceptual standpoint, the strategic Bitcoin reserve is similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, created in 1975 in response to the energy crisis of that era. The goal at the time was to build a stockpile of 1 billion barrels of petroleum, to cushion the U.S. economy against potential external supply shocks.
Similarly, the strategic Bitcoin reserve is being created in response to economic problems currently facing the U.S. government, including a massive national debt of $35 trillion. According to Michael Saylor, founder and Executive Chairman of MicroStrategy, the strategic Bitcoin reserve would help stabilize the U.S. economy, strengthen the U.S. dollar and establish the U.S. as the global leader in the digital economy.
And, if Bitcoin’s price continues to soar over the next decade, the strategic Bitcoin reserve might eventually be used to pay down the $35 trillion in national debt. As Saylor recently suggested, the strategic Bitcoin reserve has the potential to create as much as $81 trillion in new wealth for the U.S. Treasury.
The concept of the strategic Bitcoin reserve first broke into the public consciousness in July 2024, during a Bitcoin conference in Nashville, when U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming) outlined details of how it would work. Since then, it has taken on a life of its own, with personal support coming from Donald Trump.
As the Trump administration sees it, the creation of the strategic Bitcoin reserve dovetails nicely with the goal of making America “the crypto capital of the world.” And it fits into Trump’s plans to support the Bitcoin mining industry within the U.S.
The current version of the strategic Bitcoin reserve, as laid out in the Bitcoin Act of 2024, would require America to buy 1 million Bitcoins over the next five years, roughly equal to 5% of the total supply of Bitcoin in the world.
The appeal of the strategic Bitcoin reserve goes far beyond the rallying cries of the “Make America Great Again” crowd. It also appeals to fiscal conservatives, who are calling on America to rein in its spending and pay down its debt. And, since Bitcoin is typically referred to as “digital gold,” the concept of the strategic Bitcoin reserve also has appeal for anyone calling for a return of the U.S. economy to the gold standard.
While there are legitimate reasons for a strategic Bitcoin reserve, the math behind it may not work. For example, according to one estimate, for the strategic Bitcoin reserve to have any realistic chance of helping to pay down the $35 trillion national debt, the market cap of Bitcoin would need to soar well past its current level of $2 trillion. It would need to skyrocket to a value of $1 quintillion.
Moreover, the actual logistics of how the reserve would work are unclear. If the plan is simply to buy all this Bitcoin with existing dollars, then it might lead to runaway inflation and an even bigger national deficit. So one idea is to sell gold reserves held by the U.S. government, and then use those proceeds to buy Bitcoin.
There’s a lot of discussion that needs to take place to make the strategic Bitcoin reserve a reality. Right now, prediction markets are giving it about a 33% chance of happening within the first 100 days of the Trump presidency.
From my perspective, the creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve is far more likely to happen at the state level first. Ten U.S. states have already proposed some form of a Bitcoin reserve, including Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania. The Texas proposal is especially interesting, because it suggests that the state might be able to build up a Bitcoin reserve simply by encouraging Bitcoin miners in the state to pay their taxes in Bitcoin.
Given the influential role of the U.S. in the global economy, creating a strategic Bitcoin reserve would likely encourage other nations to start buying Bitcoin in bulk. Already, a handful of nations have hatched plans for a Bitcoin reserve. And some have suggested that China and Russia could get into the act, if this turns into a “Bitcoin arms race” between rival superpowers.
That’s why the strategic Bitcoin reserve could send Bitcoin’s price soaring. It would set off an unprecedented wave of Bitcoin buying by governments around the world. And it would help speed up the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin as the world’s premier digital currency.
Keep your eyes on what’s happening in states such as Texas. Once a few states figure out the logistics of how a strategic Bitcoin reserve would actually work, that’s when action can happen at the federal level. If all goes according to plan, the strategic Bitcoin reserve could become the mega-catalyst that launches Bitcoin on an epic rally for years.

India commits US$ 85 million to WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre – World Health Organization
Worldwide, traditional medicine is used by billions of people for their health and well-being. At a signing ceremony in Geneva, the Government of India committed US$ 85 million over 10 years, 2022–2032, to support the programming of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre. India’s 10-year financial contribution will support a cross-sectoral program of work to strengthen the evidence base for traditional medicine by providing data and evidence on traditional medicine policies, practice, products, and public use.
The WHO-India donor agreement is part of a US$ 250 million investment from India in support of the establishment of the WHO Global Centre of Traditional Medicine in 2022, which includes financial support for the workplan of the Centre, interim premises and a new building. This support will scale up WHO’s capacities on traditional medicine across technical divisions and regions in the spirit of global collaboration and solidarity. Part of this substantial contribution from the Government of India will also be included in WHO’s Investment Round to resource WHO’s core work during 2025–2028.

“India’s commitment and leadership in expanding the evidence-based contribution of traditional medicine to the health and well-being of all people and the planet, comes at an opportune moment,” said Dr Bruce Aylward, Assistant Director-General of the Universal Health Coverage and Life Course division of WHO. “Traditional medicine, supported within national health systems, can allow us to reach those most often left behind. Integration of traditional practice and knowledge is critical to achieving health for all.”
“The signing of this donor agreement is a major milestone towards achieving the shared vision of Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi and WHO Director-General Tedros for the development of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre at Jamnagar in India,” said Vice Minister Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
“India remains committed to supporting WHO in its work to strengthen traditional medicine systems globally for achieving universal health coverage and serving the entire humanity, especially through this Global Centre in Jamnagar, which would help focus these efforts to benefit all Member States,” said Ambassador Arindam Bagchi, Permanent Representative of India to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva.
The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre is is a knowledge hub focusing on five inter-connected areas of work: research and evidence; primary health care and universal health coverage; Indigenous Knowledges and biodiversity; digital health applications; and the biennial WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit and collaborations. The Centre is led by Dr Shyama Kuruvilla, Director a.i.
The first WHO traditional medicine global summit was held in August 2023 in Gujarat, resulting in the a multistakeholder action agenda, the Gujarat Declaration. The next WHO Global Summit is planned for November 2025, following up on the anticipated launch of the 2025–2034 Global Strategy for Traditional Medicine at the 78th World Health Assembly in May 2025.
India’s support for traditional medicine has been expressed through a variety of long-standing partnerships with WHO. In 2023, India signed a five-year agreement to support the technical work of WHO’s Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCI) unit. The unit is supporting the development of the Member State-requested new WHO traditional medicine global strategy (2025 – 2034), and publishes key benchmark documents, standardized terminologies, and other evidence-informed technical products to support the safe and effective integration of traditional medicine in national health systems.
The Centre and TCI collaborate closely with teams across WHO to advance WHO’s multisectoral agenda on traditional medicine, including through regular meetings of the WHO Technical Expert Network, coordinated by the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre and TCI, to promote a One WHO approach on traditional medicine across headquarters, regional and country office.

Internet Archive Takes Another Blow in Court on Copyright – Publishing Perspectives

The four publishing houses’ lawsuit success is upheld in the US Second Court of Appeals: ‘The Internet Archive lost again.’

By Porter Anderson, Editor-in-Chief | @Porter_Anderson
This is the case, originally filed in June 2020, Hachette Book Group et al v. Internet Archive et al, our readers will recall, in which Judge John G. Koeltl of the United States district court in the Southern District of New York produced a 47-page decision, carrying a firm rebuke of the controversial concept of “controlled digital lending” on which the Internet Archive has sought to base its position. When the Internet Archive appealed that March 2023 ruling, four major publishers—Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Penguin Random House, and Wiley—went back to court a year later, in March of this year, with a brief opposing the Internet Archive’s effort to appeal Koeltl’s decision.
It’s that appeal from the Internet Archive that today (September 3) has been rejected by the Second Course of Appeals—another profound victory for the publisher-plaintiffs and the authors and vast readership they represent. The publisher-plaintiffs in this case, supported by statements from the International Publishers Association (IPA) and others:
As the Association of American Publishers today writes in a special message to members of various news media, “In the court’s words, ‘Applying the relevant provisions of the Copyright Act, as well as binding Supreme Court and Second Circuit precedent, we conclude the answer is no,”
That means “no” to what the AAP has called “a legally absurd theory of fair use” that the Internet Archive attempted to use as its rationale.
Maria A. Pallante
Maria A. Pallante, the AAP president and CEO, says, “Today’s appellate decision upholds the rights of authors and publishers to license and be compensated for their books and other creative works and reminds us in no uncertain terms that infringement is both costly and antithetical to the public interest.
“Critically, the court frontally rejects the defendant’s self-crafted theory of ‘controlled digital lending,’ irrespective of whether the actor is commercial or noncommercial, noting that the ecosystem that makes books possible in fact depends on an enforceable Copyright Act.
“If there was any doubt, the court makes clear that under fair-use jurisprudence there is nothing ‘transformative’ about converting entire works into new formats without permission or appropriating the value of derivative works that are a key part of the author’s copyright bundle.”
Many in the American and international book publishing industry will hope that this is a concluding moment in this years-old drama precipitated by the actions of the Internet Archive—once valued and admired by many in the book business. As Andrew Albanese writes at Publishers Weekly today, “With the exception of an en banc hearing before the full Second Circuit, the appeals court decision leaves only the Supreme Court for the Internet Archive, suggesting the case may finally be winding down after years of contentious legal wrangling.”
At least one factor of some promise in this long legal slog is that the place and purpose of copyright—and the intent of the protections that the courts have said were violated by the Internet Archive—have had their visibility raised in the broader culture. This case took a major question of now-reconfirmed copyright infringement into a level of public view that many such niched issues don’t reach.
“The Internet Archive has long offered a system called the Open Library,” writes Amelia Holowaty Krales at The Verge today, “where users can ‘check out’ digital scans of physical books. The library was based on a principle called ‘controlled digital lending,’ where each loan corresponds to a physically purchased book held in a library—avoiding, in theory, a piracy claim. It’s a fundamentally different system from programs like OverDrive, where publishers sell limited-time licenses to ebooks on their own terms.”
At Bloomberg Law, Kyle Jahner writes,”Four major book publishers again thwarted the online repository’s defense that its one-to-one lending practices mirrored those of traditional libraries, this time at the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Copying books in their entirety isn’t transformative, and lending them for free competes with the publishers’ own book and ebook offerings, the unanimous panel said.”
In his report at Vice, Luis Prada brings a find simplicity to the actions being reported across such a broad swath of popular tech-related media outlets, writing, “In 2023, the Internet Archive lost that historic copyright case and vowed to appeal. The ruling on that appeal just dropped. The Internet Archive lost again.”
And Pallante and her team point to a couple of the more salient points from today’s decision that says, “If authors and creators knew that their original works could be copied and disseminated [free of charge], there would be little motivation to produce new works. And a dearth of creative activity would undoubtedly negatively impact the public. It is this reality that the Copyright Act seeks to avoid.”
And there’s this: “The Internet Archive’s Free Digital Library does not ‘improve the efficiency of delivering content’ without unreasonably encroaching on the rights of the copyright holder; it offers the same efficiencies as publishers’ derivative works while greatly impinging on their exclusive right to prepare those works.”
