The Life of Former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis – tovima.com
Kostas Simitis, Greece’s former Prime Minister, died this morning, January 5, at the age of 88.
Former Minister Kostas Simitis played a defining role in shaping Greece’s economic and political landscape at the turn of the millennium.
Born in Athens in 1936, Simitis focused his political life on reforming Greece’s economy and bringing the country closer to Europe.
Simitis’ long political career began with studies in law at the University of Marburg in Germany and economics at the London School of Economics.
In 1965, Simitis co-founded the “Alexandros Papanastasiou” Political Research Group, aiming to research Greece’s economic and societal challenges. As the country fell under the military dictatorship, his activism took a more defiant turn. The group evolved into the anti-dictatorship “Democratic Defense,” and Simitis became a target of the regime.
During the dictatorship, Simitis fled abroad and was brought to trial in absentia before the Military Court for attempted arson and violation of the law on explosives. In retaliation, his wife, Daphne Simitis, was arrested and held in solitary confinement for two months.
He taught as an assistant professor at the University of Konstanz in 1971 and continued as a full professor of Commercial and Civil Law at the University of Giessen from 1971 to 1975. In 1977 he was elected full professor at the Panteion School (now Panteion University). He spoke English, French and German.
Following the fall of the dictatorship, Simitis became a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in 1974.
Over the years, he held several key ministerial roles, including Minister of Agriculture, from 1981 to 1985, where he ensured the successful integration of Greek agriculture into the European agricultural policy, as well as the multiplication of subsidies; Minister of National Economy, from 1985 to 1987, where he implemented the first strict stabilization program, which addressed macroeconomic imbalances; Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs during the ecumenical government, under the presidency of Professor Xenophon Zolotas (November 1989 – February 1990); Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology and Minister of Trade simultaneously, from 1993 to 1995. During this time, he set the framework for a long-term development policy for the Greek economy.
Simitis’ ascent to the premiership in 1996 marked a new era for Greece. Succeeding Andreas Papandreou, he focused on reforming the economy, strengthening ties with the European Union, and preparing Greece for its pivotal role in the eurozone.
During his tenure, Simitis emphasized fiscal discipline, inflation control, and structural reforms, ensuring Greece met the Maastricht criteria for joining the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). His vision extended beyond economics, as he sought to align Greece with the EU’s core decision-making processes.
Under his leadership, inflation dropped from 8.9% in 1995 to 2.1% in 1999, public debt was reduced, and Greece’s economy grew at an average annual rate of 3.5%, outperforming the eurozone average. By 2000, Greece was officially invited to join the euro, a historic milestone that Simitis championed as a step toward permanent economic and political stability.
While Simitis’ reforms brought significant progress, they also sparked resistance. Critics argued that austerity measures and structural reforms burdened the public, and some of his policies faced pushback from both political opponents and within PASOK itself.
His tenure was also marked by controversy regarding public debt management and allegations of irregularities in public finance practices. The liberalization of the financial markets contributed to some of the conditions that later precipitated Greece’s financial crisis
Yet Simitis’ legacy is one of bringing Greece into Europe and onto a global stage. His leadership prepared Greece for the 2004 Olympic Games, revamped the country’s economy, and aligned the nation with the broader European framework. His efforts elevated living standards and strengthened Greece’s standing in Europee.
Simitis retired from active politics in 2004, but his influence continued to shape discussions about Greece’s path forward. His commitment to European integration and modernization positioned Greece as a player within the EU.

At the heart of this uncertainty lies a deep divide within Trump’s circle over legal immigration policy. The chasm between two factions—the tech-focused entrepreneurs who support the H-1B visa program and the populist right opposed to its expansion—seems insurmountable.
“The current humanitarian Crisis in the Gaza strip cannot be dealt without dialogue and diplomacy,” Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN said on Friday
The Greek PM minister also said his government’s business-friendly goals for 2025 including a further improvement of the business and investment environment, strengthening infrastructure and reducing bureaucracy

Phantom Wallet Clears the Air on Token and Airdrop Rumors: What’s Really Happening – Market – HPBL
Phantom Wallet, one of the most popular non-custodial wallets in the Solana and Ethereum ecosystem, has recently addressed the growing rumors surrounding its potential token launch and airdrop plans. As excitement builds in the crypto community, many users have been speculating about the future of Phantom Wallet, especially regarding whether the company would introduce its own native token or offer an airdrop to its loyal users.
In a recent statement, Phantom Wallet cleared the air, putting an end to these speculations with clarity and transparency. But what exactly did Phantom say, and how does this impact the broader crypto landscape? Let’s dive into the details.
Rumors had been circulating that Phantom Wallet, which has garnered a strong following for its user-friendly interface and integration with decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, was planning to launch its own native token. These rumors were fueled by the growing trend of wallet providers and DeFi projects launching tokens to reward early adopters and fund their ecosystem growth.
However, Phantom Wallet has clarified that it has no immediate plans to issue a native token. The company reassured its community that its primary focus remains on enhancing the wallet’s features, user experience, and security rather than shifting attention to launching a token. By doing so, Phantom is making it clear that it intends to maintain its user-centric approach and not get distracted by market hype or trends.
This statement comes as a relief to many users who were unsure whether they would be required to hold a token or participate in an airdrop event to access additional features. Phantom Wallet’s decision to remain token-less ensures that the platform stays simple, straightforward, and free from the complexities often associated with token economies.
In addition to addressing token rumors, Phantom Wallet also tackled the speculation surrounding a potential airdrop for users. Airdrops—often used by crypto projects as a marketing tool to distribute tokens to a large number of users—are typically seen as a way to reward early supporters and generate buzz around a new project or token.
Phantom Wallet confirmed that it has no current plans for an airdrop. The company emphasized that its goal is to create value through the ongoing development of the wallet and its seamless integration with the Solana and Ethereum ecosystems, rather than relying on one-time events to increase its user base.
While some might have hoped for an airdrop, Phantom’s decision not to pursue this route highlights its commitment to providing long-term value through continuous improvement rather than fleeting incentives. This could also reflect the company’s focus on sustainable growth rather than relying on speculative mechanisms often seen in the crypto space.
Phantom Wallet’s decision to clarify its stance on these rumors is important for several reasons. First, it helps dispel any confusion in the community, allowing users to focus on the wallet’s features and updates rather than wondering about speculative plans. Second, it reinforces the platform’s philosophy of providing a simple, efficient, and secure wallet without the distraction of token launches or airdrops.
Moreover, the decision to avoid the token trend signals that Phantom is looking to establish itself as a trusted and reliable player in the crypto ecosystem without relying on gimmicks or quick-win strategies. This could help Phantom Wallet differentiate itself from other projects that are focused on rapid token launches and speculative rewards.
With the uncertainty surrounding tokens and airdrops behind them, Phantom Wallet can now continue to focus on what matters most to its users: improving the product. The platform has consistently rolled out updates to enhance its user interface, improve wallet security, and introduce new integrations with decentralized applications (dApps).
Looking ahead, Phantom Wallet is expected to continue growing its user base, expand its cross-chain capabilities, and offer innovative features to meet the evolving needs of the crypto community. By staying focused on its core mission, Phantom aims to remain one of the top choices for crypto enthusiasts looking for a reliable and feature-rich wallet.
In summary, while rumors about tokens and airdrops stirred excitement in the community, Phantom Wallet’s clear and transparent communication ensures that users can confidently use the platform without worrying about upcoming speculative events. Instead, they can focus on enjoying the wallet’s growing ecosystem and its constant commitment to providing a seamless, secure crypto experience.

How to train a new puppy: Five bits of advice that'll save you days, weeks and months of trouble – Country Life
Our expert dog trainer Ben Randall has advice for owners of new puppies.
A-list dog trainer Ben Randall has been sharing his advice on for the last few years in the weekly Paws for Thought column here at countrylife.co.uk — and on many occasions that’s included advice for those who’ve got puppies for the first time.
Ben is on Christmas break — which for him means he’s busier than ever, looking after the dogs who stay at the award-winning Ledbury Lodge kennels in Herefordshire — but we’ve collected some of his best articles here to give anyone who got a new puppy over the holiday period a head-start on their training.
‘Getting a puppy is a big step, a long-term commitment and a source of huge joy,’ says Ben. ‘But it can be nerve-wracking integrating your new dog into the family, especially if you have young children.
‘As well as living through this situation myself, I’ve also helped people through it countless times, he adds. ‘Everything I told them I can share with you now.’
Here’s how to get started in those early weeks with a new puppy.
‘It might not seem like it as you decide between different breeds, but choosing a dog is the easy bit: the fun really begins once you get your puppy home, and start to settle him or her into your life,’ says Ben,
‘More and more owners are turning to puppy crate training to help with this process — and while first-time owners might think it seems wrong to put your dog in what feels like an oversized birdcage, what you’re actually doing is providing a safe space for your four-legged friend to feel safe, happy and comfortable.’ Here’s how to go about crate training a puppy.
‘The key question isn’t “how do I stop my puppy crying?”,’ says Ben. ‘It’s “why is my puppy crying?”. As with all my training — whether I’m teaching a dog how to sit, how to stop a dog jumping up on people or how to stop a dog pulling on the lead — it’s best to think about the reasons behind the behaviour, to figure out what’s going on in your dog’s head.’
Here’s what to do if your puppy cries at night.
‘At first, it’s all lovely puppy cuddles and snuggles and you can’t quite believe that this adorable youngster is now a part of your life,’ says Ben. “However, reality soon bites — often quite literally, as your baby shark starts to enjoy sinking his or her teeth into you with alarming regularity. Of course, it’s all fun and games — an essential part of any young dog growing up and teething — but this biting issue can become a worry.’ Read Ben’s piece on how to train an aggressive puppy here.
‘Regular readers of this column will know that I think that the “leave” command is the biggest and most effective weapon in my dog-training arsenal,’ says Ben.
‘It is a super important word and one that I use to get my dogs to desist from all sorts of negative (and sometimes dangerous) behaviours, from jumping up and nipping to barking, chasing and eating all sorts of things that could do them great harm. You can read all about how to carefully and effectively train this potentially life-saving command in my piece on the leave command.’

Bad Sisters creator Sharon Horgan talks about a possible continuation of her dark comedy show with a third season: Reports – Soap Central
The dark comedy series Bad Sisters on Apple TV+ has got everyone talking about what’s next after the second season’s heart-wrenching finale. It’s based on the Irish show Clan and is about the strong ties between siblings and dealing with the fallout from really bad relationships. The end of season two was rather intense, so now people are wondering if that’s it or if there’s more to come.
Sharon Horgan, who’s both in the show as Eva Garvey and helped create it with Dave Finkel and Brett Baer, has been a bit up and down about Bad Sisters Season 3. At first, she wasn’t sure if they should keep going with it, but lately, she’s been dropping hints that maybe there’s more story to tell.
In an interview with Bustle, she said,
This comment has got everyone talking about the possibility of a spinoff featuring Blánaid Williams (Saise Quinn), who is the daughter of Grace and John Paul.
Whether Bad Sisters sticks with the original characters or goes the anthology route, how the show tackles topics like abuse and staying strong keeps it on everyone’s radar and ensures it won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
One really interesting idea for what happens next is looking at Blánaid’s life story. After what went down in season two, she’s all on her own. It’s a chance to dig into some deep trajectories, like how her family’s past troubles might affect her and how she handles it all and takes the generational trauma in her stride.
Horgan, the show’s creator, talked about where she sees Blánaid going. She wants to show Blánaid being cared for and loved by the people around her. It’s about how she can keep going even after everything she’s been through.
This viewpoint opens up a whole world of storytelling, showing us how Blánaid finds her way out of her family’s sad past.
A new show just about Blánaid could dive into important topics, like how society keeps letting people get away with doing wrong things, which we saw with the crooked cops in season two.
By looking at how she deals with all that and still comes out strong, the series could keep its meaningful message while telling us fresh, new stories.
Moving ahead with Bad Sisters, the show could take inspiration from series like The White Lotus on HBO that use an anthology style. This would give them the freedom to bring in fresh faces and tales that aren’t tied down by the Garvey sisters’ story.
Horgan has talked about how much she likes this idea, saying:
Imagine a collection of stories that captures the same kind of dark comedy as Bad Sisters, but each one looks at different families and what they face in society or throws you into a fresh cultural scene.
So, each writer could have the chance to let their imagination run wild while still keeping laughs along with heartfelt moments that we all connect with.
Even though the potential ideas are exciting, Horgan has expressed concerns about sticking with the original plot.
When she talked to The Hollywood Reporter, she joked,
This rhetorical question brings up an issue: how to keep the show’s storyline believable and fresh without going overboard.
The possibility of a Bad Sisters Season 3 isn’t completely out of the question. Horgan keeps talking about new directions and spin-offs, which tells us the minds behind the show are up for cooking up some fresh concepts.
What she actually said was,
Whether or not this happens will hinge on how many people tune in and how much they love it. Apple TV+ is tight-lipped about their viewership numbers, though.
No matter what happens, Bad Sisters is still a show that stands out on Apple TV+. It’s got good writing that’s well thought out, and the wonderful cast, including Anne-Marie Duff, Sarah Greene, Eve Hewson, Eva Birthistle, and Yasmine Akram, bring their A game.
Check out both seasons of Bad Sisters on Apple TV+.

HMPV: Nothing to worry about yet another pandemic – Gulte
A new Corona-like virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is fast spreading in China, with many affected admitted to hospitals during the second half of December, last year. Five years after Covid wreaked havoc across the world, reports of HMPV are creating a scare among the public. It may be recalled that spread of Covid virus also intensified at the same time in 2019.
Responding to the fears, the health experts in India asked the people not to go into panic mode and remain calm. There is nothing to worry about as HMPV infection would lead to a cough, cold, fever, a blocked nose, shortness of breath, they said.
According to social media posts, along with HMPV, cases of influenza A, mico plasma, pneumonia, Covid-19 virus cases are also increasing. Videos showing people in protective gear like face masks, long plastic gowns and knee boots thronging hospitals are going viral.
People affected with HMPV are reportedly showing symptoms of Covid-19 patients. They are complaining of cold, fever, cough, running nose and congestion in the respiratory tract.
China Preventive Medicine Association constituted a monitoring body to handle the crisis, according to a report in a global media outlet.
Reports said that HMPV was identified in 2001 and it is being said that it is a seasonal disease.
Flu cases are also on the rise in China. Responding to the situation, the official representative of Chinese foreign affairs ministry Mao Ning said that it is usual for flu and respiratory diseases to spread during winters. When compared to last year, these cases are less this year.
Ning also said that foreigners touring China need not panic and that their government would give an assurance of it.
The Union Health Ministry of India convened a Joint Monitoring Group (JMG), including experts from various health organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The Indian government allayed fears over yet another pandemic and stated: “Data from a preparedness drill held across the country recently indicated that it is completely equipped to deal with any surge in the respiratory illnesses.”
