Mega Millions jackpot soars to $825 million – Lootpress

WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – As winter sets in, the Mega Millions® jackpot is heating up, reaching an estimated $825 million for the drawing on Friday, December 20.
The cash option for the prize is $382.2 million. If won, this would be the largest December jackpot in the game’s history and the seventh-largest overall.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won on September 10 in Texas at $810 million. In the 28 drawings since then, nearly 19.4 million tickets have won non-jackpot prizes, including 51 second-tier prizes worth $1 million or more across 21 states.
The most recent drawing on December 17 produced 1,602,721 winning tickets at all prize levels. Five tickets matched five white balls for the second-tier prize.
One North Carolina ticket included the optional Megaplier, boosting its value to $4 million. Other second-tier winners hailed from California, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
Third-tier prizes of $10,000 were awarded to 55 tickets, with 17 boosted to $40,000 via the Megaplier. California prizes vary due to the state’s pari-mutuel prize structure.
Mega Millions has seen only three jackpots won this year, the fewest in a single year since its 2002 inception. The largest 2023 jackpot, $1.128 billion, was won in New Jersey on March 26 but remains unclaimed.
Mega Millions is the only lottery to have six jackpots surpassing $1 billion, with record-setting prizes won in states including South Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, and Florida.
Tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands for $2 each, with an optional $1 Megaplier to boost non-jackpot winnings.
Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET in Atlanta, Georgia. While the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24, the odds of winning the jackpot stand at 1 in 302.6 million.

Chinese hospitals join NUS Medicine's big health data project – Healthcare IT News

Photo courtesy of the National University of Singapore Yong Lin School of Medicine
Hospitals from China will be partaking in existing research in Singapore that aims to develop precise and personalised solutions to early detect and manage symptoms of cardiovascular diseases specific to the Asian population.
Early this month, Kailuan General Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, and Tianjin Medical University General Hospital signed a memorandum of understanding to join the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine’s (NUS Medicine) Project RESET.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
The new Project RESET Parallel Cohort will particularly focus on subclinical cardiovascular diseases (SCVD), or asymptomatic conditions associated with higher risk of cardiovascular diseases that have become a growing concern among Asian populations. Tianjin Medical University reportedly has expertise in this research area.
The four organisations will study data from a diverse, multi-ethnic cohort of Asians using multi-omics and big data to discover molecular, metabolic, and immunological markers of heart diseases. Besides filling gaps in the research of SCVD, their study will also contribute to developing “precise, personalised prevention and management strategies for cardiovascular conditions.”
Additionally, the organisations will conduct trials to test the effectiveness of AI and digital health interventions for detecting and treating cardiovascular conditions.
THE LARGER TREND
NUS Medicine launched the Project RESET in September last year. The five-year research project, funded by the Singaporean government, initially sought to track heart disease symptoms that go undetected in the majority of Singaporean people. At least 3 million individuals or half of the island city-state’s population unknowingly have heart disease. Up to 80% of healthy individuals are reportedly unaware of the abnormal calcium build-up in their arteries while around four in 10 have fatty liver, which is also a key sign of heart disease.
Project RESET then aims to discover new biomarkers of early heart disease; it also intends to pilot new methods and approaches to prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
Other national and private initiatives in Singapore are building big databases representing the diversity of the Asian population, contributing to precision medicine. The SG100K project, led by the government’s Precision Health Research, is analysing big data – sequencing genomes of a hundred thousand individuals – to better understand various factors contributing to non-communicable diseases relevant to Asians. Private startup Mesh Bio has established a big multi-omics dataset that assists in generating insights into metabolic conditions related to the Asian population.
Outside Singapore, India has also embarked on a population-wide initiative, led by the Indian Council of Medical Research, to collect and curate volumes of medical images representing the Indian people to support AI development. In September, the first comprehensive multi-omics database on cancer was also launched in India after fifteen years. The Indian Cancer Genome Atlas now provides initial access to clinically annotated data on DNA, RNA, and protein profiles of breast cancer patients.

Maryland lawmakers announce $7 million to increase security at places of worship – CBS News

/ CBS Baltimore
BALTIMORE — More than $7 million in federal funding will help strengthen security at 50 churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious community centers across Maryland, Maryland lawmakers announced on Thursday.
More than 25 of those places of worship are in the Baltimore area.
Baltimore Area – $4,050,000
National Capital Region – $2,239,850
Western Maryland – $968,500
Southern Maryland – $135,000
According to state leaders, the funding is provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which helps high-risk nonprofits, including faith-based institutions, obtain the resources required to support and integrate preparedness activities with broader state and local efforts.
“Religious freedom is protected under our Constitution, and every Marylander must be able to worship without fear for their safety,” Maryland lawmakers said in a joint statement. “With threats and attacks against faith communities on the rise, we must not only speak out against those hateful actions – we also must invest in protecting these institutions that support communities across our state. Maryland families can trust that these federal grants will help ensure houses of worship have the resources they need to keep them safe.”

New Venues, Race Lengths for 2025 Endurance Challenge – Sportscar365

Sebring, Road Atlanta added to schedule for second season of Porsche Endurance Challenge North America…
by
Photo: Porsche
After a highly successful inaugural season, Porsche Endurance Challenge North America is set to return in 2025 with new venues, race distances and an updated class structure attracting the nation’s top Porsche racers.
Last year’s inaugural championship featured three one-hour races culminating with a six-hour title decider at Circuit of The Americas.
For 2025, two of America’s most prestigious endurance racing venues, Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta, will join the calendar for the first time.
The updated race format will feature a season-opening two-hour battle at Sebring followed by a pair of 90-minute races at California’s Sonoma Raceway and COTA.
The championship will conclude at Road Atlanta with a four-hour contest to determine who claims the championship prize.
As in 2024, the championship is open to racers competing with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup machine as well as the Porsche 718 Cayman RS Clubsport.
The opening season of the championship featured four different winners in the GT3 Cup class, with JTR Motorsport Engineering’s Anthony McIntosh taking the prize.
The Cayman championship was won by Kellymoss’ Michael Clark, who teamed with Porsche Carrera Cup North America Pro champion Dutchman Loek Hartog.
For 2025, both the GT3 Cup and Cayman divisions will feature both Pro-am and Am classes.
All four 2025 races will take place on the same weekend as rounds of Porsche Sprint Challenge North America presented by Yokohama – allowing teams and drivers to use the same car in both sprint and endurance competition.
“The inaugural season of Porsche Endurance Challenge North America was a massive success, and we are really looking to grow the championship even further in 2025,” said Porsche Motorsport North America President and CEO Volker Holzmeyer.
“We have worked closely with our teams, our drivers, and our sanctioning body, USAC, to gain valuable insight and feedback about how we can make the championship even bigger and better.
“We’re placing a greater emphasis on the ‘endurance’ part of the name for 2025 with tweaks to the race lengths and formats, with the shortest race now extended from an hour to 90 minutes.
“Adding two iconic endurance racing  venues like Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta, also makes the series even more attractive to our competitors.
“We’re very proud of Porsche’s incredible history in endurance racing. This type of motorsport really defines what the brand is all about.
“The Porsche Endurance Challenge North America will play a key role in not only developing young drivers who are looking to climb their way up the Porsche pyramid into IMSA, SRO and FIA WEC, but also giving a great opportunity to our Pro-am and Am drivers to be able to compete in the same event with their driving coach.”
2025 Porsche Endurance Challenge North America Schedule:
Feb. 28 – March 2 — Sebring International Raceway (120 minutes)
April 4-6 — Sonoma Raceway (90 minutes)
May 16-18 — Circuit of The Americas (90 minutes)
Sept. 12-14 — Road Atlanta (240 minutes)
