On November 10, 2023, a new part of the cult series of military shooters, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, was released on PC and consoles. The game continues the storyline of last year’s release: we again find ourselves in the thick of things together with an elite squad of soldiers who fight terrorists and other global threats. We’ll talk about multiplayer later, but now I want to share my impressions of the single-player campaign.
At first, I planned to talk about both the pros and cons of the story mode. But, to be honest, I was unable to find any advantages. If you are considering buying it solely for the single-player, my advice is: don’t. It’s better to save time and money. A small warning: there will be a slight spoiler below regarding the very first mission. It is unlikely to spoil your impressions, but if you prefer to enter the game “blindly”, feel free to scroll down to the “What is Modern Warfare 3 about” section.
Table of Contents
In the finale of the previous part, Special Forces 141 under the command of Captain Price managed to prevent a large-scale terrorist attack on US territory. However, their mission did not end there – the heroes learned of a new danger: Vladimir Makarov, a charismatic and ruthless leader of Russian ultra-nationalists, enters the scene. After the credits, the viewer was shown a tense episode – a group of militants hijacks a passenger plane. One of them receives a short but important message from Makarov: “No Russian language.” Obviously, there is something more behind this than a regular hijacking.

The plot of Modern Warfare 3 starts with a daring operation: Makarov’s allies arrange an escape – they snatch him from the hands of the Russian authorities right from prison. When Captain Price learns about this, he and the fighters of the 141st begin a large-scale hunt for the old enemy. As for the gameplay, it remains true to the traditions of the series. We again take on the role of an elite unit fighter and carry out dangerous missions around the world. Most often, missions come down to clearing enemy territory, infiltrating facilities and neutralizing threats.
Sometimes levels develop according to a linear scenario – just move forward, clearing the way. And there are more open maps, where you can show your ingenuity and choose how exactly to get to the goal. Along the way, you can pick up weapons and equipment – both from defeated enemies and in hidden caches. There is no leveling system in the story campaign – the emphasis is on dynamics and atmosphere.

The reboot of Modern Warfare decided to move away from the pathos and fantasy of the original trilogy. Instead of an epic about super soldiers, there is a tense military thriller with an emphasis on terrorism and special operations. It sounds solid, and the cutscenes are really impressive, but the plot… does not grab. It is not annoying, but it is not in a hurry to grab.
That was the case – until the release of Modern Warfare 3. Alas, it was the disappointment that is difficult to forgive. The campaign ends faster than some TV series have time to accelerate – only about four hours. During this time, they manage to tell a confusing and not particularly exciting story about how the villain Makarov leads everyone by the nose. He is here as a brilliant strategist with an army of devoted fanatics, ready to follow him even into fire. Why do they believe him? Who is he anyway? What is all this for? There are zero answers.

It would be fine if Makarov were a mysterious villain in the shadows, but no — he constantly appears in the frame. We even save him in the first mission! But we can’t feel any antipathy towards him. No charisma, no threat — he’s just a villain by position, so that the heroes have someone to butt heads with. The same problem with the rest of the plot: not a single moment evokes any emotion or interest. Everything is predictable, flat, and as if it was done “to leave us alone.” Here are just a few reasons why the story doesn’t work:
Don’t expect any shocking twists, betrayals, or real drama. Those who played the original parts will easily guess how all the events will develop. And the most offensive thing is that the plot breaks off right in the middle of the story. There is no ending. Expect a sequel… someday.
No, the previous parts of the reboot weren’t the pinnacle of screenwriting either. But at least they were entertaining. Yes, after a month you would hardly remember what the story was about, but it was fun during the game. In the case of MW3, after the second hour you think: “well, that’s enough, it’s time to finish.” Some of the problems could have been smoothed out if the campaign had been built according to the classic Call of Duty canons – with drive, spectacle and variety. But no. And this is another reason why the story mode of Modern Warfare 3 can be safely skipped.
Ever since the Call of Duty series moved away from the classics of World War II and took a course on blockbusters, it has always been associated with cinematography and spectacle. We fought off a Russian invasion right in the suburbs of Washington, escaped from a gloomy gulag, made our way through a blizzard to a base in Kazakhstan, and escaped pursuit on snowmobiles under the roar of explosions. The gameplay boiled down to one thing – rush forward and shoot at everything that moves. But it was done with such a scope that there was no thought of repetition. Everything around was collapsing, burning, blowing up into the air, and partners were rushing nearby, shouting orders.
Modern Warfare 3 The Sequel That Should Have Remained DLC
But all this is in the past. In the campaign of Modern Warfare 3 from Sledgehammer Games, almost nothing remains from the usual action. Instead of scripted productions, we are waiting for the “formula of open missions” – it sounds ambitious, but in reality everything is much simpler and more modest. A typical mission now looks like this: you appear in a small location – say, a port with a couple of buildings, towers, containers and some ship on the horizon. The task is simple: find three containers with missiles. And then – do whatever you want. If you want – crawl through the bushes in stealth mode, if you want – go straight ahead with a machine gun at the ready.
What you can find on such maps:
This structure is more reminiscent of multiplayer modes like Warzone or DMZ than a classic singleplayer campaign. There are no partners, you do everything yourself, the enemies are typical bots, and the tasks resemble mini-quests from the “battle royale”. The maximum spectacle is when a helicopter flies from above and pours out a new portion of enemies.
Maybe this would have worked if there were only a couple of such missions throughout the entire game. But when more than half of the campaign is built according to this scheme, fatigue sets in very quickly. Interesting and at least somewhat memorable episodes – you can count them on the fingers of one hand.
But the singleplayer in Call of Duty has always been something like a warm-up before the multiplayer: log in, get a dose of adrenaline, feel the atmosphere, and then – online. Here it seems that you are simply being trained before being thrown into Warzone. And most of the content has migrated from there. And this is, perhaps, the main problem of the new campaign.
When you pick up a new game — especially if it’s a continuation of a well-known series — expectations involuntarily arise in your head: something fresh, unusual, unexpected. You want to see new mechanics, try out unfamiliar weapons, explore original maps. But, alas, in the case of the Modern Warfare 3 campaign, no miracle happened.
All the game features that are here, we’ve already seen in last year’s Modern Warfare 2. Swimming underwater? Yes. Controlling the AC-130? Also not new. Parachute jumping — deja vu. Even the arsenal does not please with anything unique — all the weapons are familiar down to the last sight. And those maps are collected from old Warzone locations: the developers simply cut out pieces from them and designed them as missions for a single-player campaign.
Why Modern Warfare 3's Story Is Disappointing
As a result, it feels like you launched not a new part, but an additional chapter to the previous game. And this is not an illusion — this is how it was all intended. Initially, Sledgehammer Games was developing a story DLC for Modern Warfare 2, a continuation of the post-credits scene that would logically fit into the structure of that game.
But at some point, Activision decided to play it differently: pass off the DLC as a full-fledged third part and set the price tag as for a full-fledged release. In multiplayer, such a trick can still work – there they traditionally limit themselves to a couple of new guns and maps. But for a story campaign, this is too thin ice. Modern Warfare 3 leaves the impression of a small addition, which, by mistake, costs $70. And for this money, it is clearly not worth it.
To be honest, it’s not entirely clear why so much negativity was poured out on this part. If we were to rebel, it would have been more logical last year — then Infinity Ward openly ignored the entire community. But instead, you and I provided Modern Warfare 2 with record sales in the history of the series. Ironic, right?
And now Modern Warfare 3 is coming out — and, oddly enough, it’s trying to really fix the mistakes of the previous part. This is especially noticeable in multiplayer. And if you missed MW2 at the time, the new game can be a real gift: a lively, rich online that pleasantly surprises again.
With Modern Warfare 3's Single Player Campaign
In addition, MW3 has a long and generous year ahead: the developers have already promised to release 16 new maps for multiplayer. It seems that Activision has finally remembered that Call of Duty is not only Warzone, but also a classic, old-school online that many people love so much.
What I liked:
What I didn’t like:
To ensure a smooth experience while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), your system should meet certain hardware specifications. At the very least, you’ll need a 64-bit version of Windows 10 installed, paired with a processor like an Intel Core i5-6600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 1400. The game requires a minimum of 8 gigabytes of RAM, and your graphics card should be on par with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or an AMD Radeon RX 470. DirectX 12 is necessary, and although you can technically run the game on a traditional hard drive, having at least 149 GB of available storage—ideally on an SSD—will significantly improve performance.
For those seeking a more optimal gaming experience, the recommended setup includes Windows 11 (64-bit) as the operating system, backed by a stronger CPU such as an Intel Core i7-6700K or an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X. In this case, 16 GB of RAM is ideal, along with a more powerful GPU—think NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX Vega 64. As before, DirectX 12 remains a requirement, and installing the game on a solid-state drive is highly encouraged for faster loading times and smoother gameplay.
Whether you’re aiming for the minimum specs or building around the recommended setup, MW3’s visuals and performance will greatly benefit from a modern machine.
