Miguel Angel Aguilar death: SoCal gym owner, fitness influencer dies 3 months after being shot during Los Angeles robbery – ABC7 Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A Southern California-based fitness influencer and gym-chain owner who was shot during a robbery in Los Angeles three months ago has died.
Miguel Angel Aguilar, who was the founder and CEO of Self Made Training, passed away Saturday.
"After a courageous three-month battle following the tragic incident that took place on September 13th, 2024, Miguel peacefully passed away on December 21st, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones," read a post shared on Aguilar's Self Made Family Instagram account.
"Miguel was more than just a leader; he was a visionary, an inspiration, a mentor, a father, a husband, family, and a dear friend to many. His unwavering dedication to Self Made Training Facility, his passion for the fitness industry and entrepreneurial spirit have left an enduring legacy."
According to police, on the afternoon of Sept. 13, four suspects approached a 43-year-old man on the 11400 block of North Thurston Circle.
They demanded property and at one point fired shots at him, then fled the scene. At the time, police did not identify Aguilar by name.
Since then, three men have been charged with murder and robbery in the case.
Aguilar's Self Made Family account, which has more than 52,000 followers on Instagram, provides advice on fitness as well as entrepreneurship.
Self Made Training, headquartered in Temecula, has more than two dozen gym locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Texas, according to its website.

San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport: 2 lawsuits challenge environmental, health impacts of OAK expansion – ABC7 Bay Area

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — The Oakland airport is looking to expand with its first major expansion project since it was built in the 1960s. But two lawsuits are seeking to block it.
"By doing (these) additional gates and increased airport traffic, these communities will be getting additional pollution in an area already overburdened by pollution," said Dr. Paul English, a former epidemiologist with the California Department of Public Health.
He is also part of the Stop OAK Expansion Coalition, which filed one of the lawsuits against the Port of Oakland, owner and operator of the Oakland airport.
The main claim is that the airport's final Environmental Impact Report, or EIR, does not meet the standards of the California Environmental Quality Act, also known as CEQA.
One issue being raised is that the Port conducted a health risk assessment as part of the EIR. The coalition wants a health impact assessment. The argument is that a health impact assessment focuses on inequities in ways the other data doesn't, as related to the predominately low-income neighborhoods of East Oakland–which already suffers health effects from current airport operations, according to the lawsuit.

"When you look at the data, these East Oakland zip codes, they have rates of emergency visits from asthma that are three times the state average, coronary obstructive pulmonary disease rates that are twice the state average, and heart attacks which are 45% higher than the state average," English said.
The expansion and modernization project aims to meet the increase in passenger and cargo demand that is projected over the next two decades.
"The Port is proposing to modernize OAK's aging passenger terminals including the demolition of part of Terminal 1 that was built in the 1960s and constructing new terminal facilities that will meet up-to-date safety, seismic, and efficiency standards. New environmental and zero-emissions innovations will be an integral part of the development," as described by the Port in a statement issued in October.
The Final EIR was certified by the Board of Port Commissioners in November.
The Port of Oakland declined an interview request. But in a statement to ABC7 News, it counters lawsuit claims by stating: "The EIR is a product of years of careful study, community outreach and careful deliberation."

"CEQA exists precisely for situations like this, which is to prevent the government and developers from trading community health without disclosing those impacts for the sake of profit," said Sarah Chen Small, an attorney with Communities for a Better Environment, which filed a separate second lawsuit on Thursday.
One of the claims is that the expansion project is not fully defined–another violation of CEQA. For example, it claims there is almost no analysis of what could be a doubling of fossil fuel storage and distribution at the airport.
"This instead is providing a changeable plan, saying up to 16 gates, up to this many gates, decommissioning very vague definitions of things–which leaves to door open for the Port to make decisions in the dark later," said Chen Small.
The lawsuits come as the Port of Oakland is facing legal challenges over its renaming the airport as the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.

Law Roundup: Unwanted package not considered evidence – Daily Inter Lake

Despite notifying her bank of a fraud charge on a credit card and freezing her accounts, a package from Victoria’s Secret was still delivered to a caller. Kalispell Police Department told her she could keep the package because it was not deemed worthy of retaining as evidence. 
After putting down half the money for a trailer a caller reported to law enforcement that the owner sold the trailer out from under him. 
A dark blue SUV that had been parked overnight had its front windshield completely smashed in. 
A manager reported that someone was standing on the street yelling at customers as they passed by.   
An unknown vehicle took out fences and a speed limit sign.  
A driver accidentally bumped their phone while driving calling 911. 
An almost five-gallon gas can was sitting unsecured outside an abandoned vehicle.  
A suspicious man crossing the street was just taking a walk.  
False accusations were being posted online and a caller wanted it recorded.  
A 2021 Ford Transit had been left in a parking lot for about a year. 
A driver said a smaller silver SUV side-swiped her vehicle causing minor damage. But with limited information provided, law enforcement said it would be difficult to find the offending vehicle.  
A lost lab mix, and a German shepherd were taken to the shelter.  
A cleaning crew triggered a house alarm.  
A woman in her late 20s wearing pink sweat pants and an older woman in dark clothing were allegedly stealing from a store, but had taken off.  
A daughter on a walk with her elderly mother was unable to locate her parent after turning her back for a minute.  
A man riding his bike around town in the dark was advised to put a light on his bike.  
After his car was backed into, a man thought he had broken his wrist.

Saphala Ekadashi – The Indian Panorama

Saphala Ekadashi is a sacred day observed in the Hindu tradition, dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Lumpaka, a wayward and sinful prince, indulged in immoral activities, disrespecting his family and Dharma. As a consequence, he was exiled from the kingdom by his father.
Despite his misdeeds, Lumpaka unknowingly observed a fast and performed penance on Saphala Ekadashi while living in the forest. On this day, he abstained from consuming food and spent the night under a banyan tree, which is considered sacred in Hinduism. His accidental observance of the Ekadashi vrat (fast) pleased Lord Vishnu, who forgave Lumpaka’s sins and restored him to his rightful place as the heir to the kingdom. The story underscores the transformative power of Saphala Ekadashi, highlighting how even unintentional devotion can lead to redemption and divine grace.
The Significance of Saphala Ekadashi
– Spiritual Upliftment: Saphala Ekadashi is regarded as a powerful day for spiritual cleansing and advancement. Observing the fast with devotion helps individuals purify their minds and souls, bringing them closer to moksha (liberation).

Enough water to fill trillions of oceans found circling a quasar – Earth.com

Astronomers have identified a remarkable water reservoir hidden in a corner of the cosmos, circling a quasar more than 12 billion light-years away.
At that distance, the light we see today began its journey not too long after the universe itself formed.
The water supply in this distant place is huge, containing the equivalent of about 140 trillion times all the water in Earth’s oceans combined.
This supply is sitting near a supermassive black hole that is about 20 billion times more massive than our sun.
The black hole is surrounded by a quasar named APM 08279+5255, which pumps out as much energy as a thousand trillion suns.
This quasar, according to astronomers, holds the farthest and largest known reservoir of water anywhere in the universe.
Matt Bradford, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., leads one of the teams involved in the observations.
“The environment around this quasar is very unique in that it’s producing this huge mass of water,” said Matt Bradford. “It’s another demonstration that water is pervasive throughout the universe, even at the very earliest times.”
Both Bradford’s group and a separate team of astronomers studied APM 08279+5255 and its black hole, which sits at the center and draws matter inward.
As it does, it warms the surrounding gas and dust, forming an area filled with molecules that have never before been detected at such an immense distance.
Quasars were first noticed more than half a century ago when telescopes revealed puzzling sources of intense brightness in distant areas of space.
These objects are unlike any ordinary star. They shine brightly from the center of distant galaxies, outshining all their galaxy’s stars combined.
At their heart sit supermassive black holes, millions or billions of times heavier than our sun. As gas and dust spiral in toward one of these black holes, the swirling material heats up and releases energy.
This energy blasts out across all kinds of wavelengths, making quasars some of the brightest, most energetic phenomena ever seen.
Observing quasars helps astronomers understand what the universe looked like long ago, since the light we see now began its journey billions of years in the past.
Quasars can show how galaxies formed, how matter spread out, and how the earliest structures in the cosmos came together.
They can even help map the distribution of matter between galaxies, shining light on the regions that would otherwise remain unseen.
Some quasars also launch huge jets of high-speed particles that stretch across enormous distances. These jets can affect how stars form, influencing entire neighborhoods of cosmic material.
Astronomers observed that water vapor is present in this quasar’s environment. It occupies a region spanning hundreds of light-years, with one light-year at around six trillion miles.
Although the gas is thin by Earth standards, it is surprisingly warm and dense compared to what is typical in places like our Milky Way.
The temperature hovers around minus 63 degrees Fahrenheit, and the gas is roughly 300 trillion times less dense than Earth’s atmosphere.
Still, it is about five times hotter and tens to hundreds of times denser than the gas seen in normal galaxies. With its unusual conditions, this region stands out as an unexpected find.
Water vapor is not just a molecule. Its presence here suggests that the quasar is bathing its environment in radiation that keeps the gas relatively warm.
Astronomers also spotted other molecules, like carbon monoxide, hinting that there is an abundance of raw material that can feed the black hole as it continues to grow.
They estimate that there is enough gas for the black hole to increase in size by about six times, although what actually happens next is not certain.
Some of this gas may form new stars, while some might be thrown out into space instead. Either way, these measurements open a window into what conditions were like when the universe was still young.
Detecting water vapor in such a distant quasar expands our knowledge of how building blocks appear across vast stretches of time and space.
Water is essential for life as we know it, and its presence billions of years ago suggests that the elements needed for life have been around for a very long time.
Beyond that, water plays a key role in shaping how stars and galaxies evolve. When gas clouds cool, water helps by allowing those clouds to collapse more easily, leading to star birth.
By spotting it this far back, astronomers get new clues about how galaxies changed as the universe aged and matured.
Bradford’s team began collecting data in 2008 with an instrument called Z-Spec at the California Institute of Technology’s Submillimeter Observatory (CSO).
This 33-foot telescope sits near the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. They later confirmed their findings using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA), a set of radio dishes located high in the Inyo Mountains of Southern California.
Meanwhile, another group led by Dariusz Lis, senior research associate in physics at Caltech and deputy director of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, used the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the French Alps.
In 2010, Lis’s team found hints of water in this quasar by detecting a single signature, while Bradford’s team uncovered multiple signals that revealed the massive amount of water present.
To sum it all up, this discovery shows that even at a time when the universe was young, water formed and gathered in places we never would have guessed.
Instead of seeing just cold, empty darkness out there, astronomers have spotted a real treasure — an enormous reservoir of water swirling around a quasar more than 12 billion light-years away.
This water vapor, along with the intense radiation from the black hole at the quasar’s center, paints a picture of an environment that is far denser, warmer, and more active than ordinary parts of the cosmos.
By studying this distant quasar, scientists can learn how the earliest galaxies came together and evolved. They can see how matter spread out, how black holes grew, and how even tiny molecules like water played a role in shaping the universe.
Every new detail uncovered by these long-ago signals traveling through time and space helps make sense of the vast cosmic story we are all a part of.

One of the most troubling aspects of these developments is the alleged support of Muhammad Yunus (the Nobel Peace Prize recipient), a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s political arena. Yunus, who currently holds considerable sway in the interim government, has faced accusations of facilitating ISI operations. His advisors have purportedly made incendiary statements regarding the “occupation” of India’s northeastern states; this assertion has, therefore, further exacerbated India-Bangladesh relations. Although such rhetoric, coupled with allegations of complicity in covert activities, has garnered extensive criticism, it remains uncertain how these tensions will progress. However, the ramifications of these occurrences are significant.
Maritime Infiltration: Weapons and Drugs
One of the primary methods through which the ISI is infiltrating Bangladesh is via maritime routes. Ships originating from Pakistan have been reported to carry weapons and narcotics into Bangladesh. These shipments, purportedly intended to fund and support militant activities, violate international laws and threaten regional peace. The scale and frequency of these operations highlight a well-organised supply chain designed to destabilise the region.
Exploitation of the Bihari Community
The Urdu-speaking Bihari community in Bangladesh (which has historically faced marginalisation and is estimated to number around 300,000) has become a central focus for ISI operations. The agency is reportedly engaged in providing terrorist training to these individuals, intending to utilise them as assets for executing attacks against India. This exploitation not only exacerbates the community’s plight but also represents a grave security threat. By radicalising disenfranchised groups, the ISI is creating a network of operatives capable of conducting cross-border operations.
Collaboration with Rohingya Militants
The ISI’s involvement with Rohingya militant factions—especially the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA)—introduces yet another dimension to this intricate issue. Through intermediaries like Hizb-ut-Tahrir and trained Biharis, the ISI supplies weapons, explosives, and logistical support to these groups. These activities are designed not only to destabilise India; they also specifically target the Arakan Army in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. This dual-front strategy underscores the ISI’s objective to create widespread instability in the region; however, it raises significant concerns about the broader implications for regional security.
Cyber Intimidation and Psychological Operations
The ISI’s tactics extend beyond physical operations to include cyber and psychological warfare. Moreover, a well-structured cyber unit operating in Bangladesh has been dispatching menacing messages to numerous Hindu individuals (labelling them “Indian agents”) and alleging that they support Bangladesh’s struggle for independence. This cyber harassment aims to instill discord and fear among minority groups; however, it further undermines the social cohesion of Bangladesh. Although the intent may be to intimidate, the consequences are far-reaching, affecting the very essence of community life.
High-Level Meetings and Strategic Alignments
Reports indicate that Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Egypt, accompanied by key military personnel. Such high-level interactions suggest a coordinated effort to strategise and expand ISI influence. These meetings raise concerns about potential international ramifications, as they indicate a broader network of collaboration aimed at undermining regional stability.
The Role of Daniel Stephen Courtney
Adding to this intricate web of activities is the case of Daniel Stephen Courtney, a US Army veteran and alleged deep-cover terror handler. Courtney has reportedly intensified his operations in India after being blacklisted and deported in 2017. Operating from a base in Nepal under the guise of a business visa, Courtney’s activities highlight the transnational nature of these threats. Despite his notoriety, Nepalese authorities have allegedly assisted, complicating efforts to neutralise his operations.
Implications for India and Regional Security
The expanding influence of the ISI in Bangladesh presents significant implications for India and the wider region. India’s northeastern states (which are already susceptible) due to insurgent activities face heightened threats from ISI-supported networks. Cross-border terrorism, arms smuggling, and radicalisation efforts could destabilise India’s internal security and strain bilateral relations with Bangladesh; however, the ISI’s collaboration with Rohingya and other militant groups has the potential to create a ripple effect of violence across the region (targeting Myanmar and other neighbouring countries). Although this situation is precarious, it demands immediate attention because the consequences could be far-reaching.
Regional security mechanisms are also at risk. South Asia’s fragile stability could be further compromised if the ISI succeeds in establishing Bangladesh as a launchpad for international terrorism. Such developments would necessitate a robust response from regional organisations like SAARC and international actors to address the growing menace effectively.
Call to Action: Fortifying Regional Collaboration
In light of the seriousness of these developments, immediate action is necessary to counter the ISI’s activities. Key measures encompass.
Enhanced Intelligence Sharing: Regional stakeholders must place a high priority on the exchange of intelligence to effectively monitor and dismantle ISI networks.
Strengthened Border Security: Strengthened border security and improved surveillance and enforcement at maritime and land borders are crucial for curbing illegal shipments of weapons and drugs.
Community Engagement: Community engagement is also vital because addressing the grievances of marginalised groups, such as the Biharis, can help prevent their exploitation by external actors.
International Cooperation: Collaborative efforts with global allies are necessary to expose and neutralise transnational networks like those involving Daniel Stephen Courtney.
Turning a blind eye to these threats and not nipping them in the bud could result in an upsurge of Islamist terrorism and violence and further destabilise an already volatile region. The global community must recognise the urgency of this threat and act decisively to ensure peace and stability in South Asia. Although there may be obstacles and myopic national interests, immediate action must be taken to prevent South Asia from becoming the hub of Islamist terrorism with global footprints.
