As a polytheistic culture, ancient Romans believed that various gods offered and affected different aspects of people’s lives and the environment. In Anno 117: Pax Romana, it is up to you to decide which will be the patron god of your town or city. As your island population grows, so will the Devotion level to the god you have chosen to look over your people.
Choose the right god for your island and increase the Belief and Devotion of the townsfolk to unlock additional effects and rewards. Here is all you need to know about gods and religion in Anno 117.
There are only three deities unlocked when you start Anno 117, so the choice is pretty easy at the beginning, but eventually, you will have all seven gods to choose from. You will want to pick the god who will provide the best buffs to your island, depending on what produce you will be most focused on. To begin with, your choice will be one of these three patrons:
Who you choose is entirely up to you, but you should be influenced by whatever items you are trying to produce on your island. Each god offers an increase in different items grown or crafted on your island, with that productivity buff increasing as your island’s Devotion increases.
Swap out Shrines for ones dedicated to the newly appointed patron god of your island when you choose a different deity to look over them.

You can choose a new deity to become your island’s patron if and when your focus changes, but your Devotion is reset to zero. This will slowly increase over time, helped along by happy, healthy, and content villagers.
The Island Belief directly affects the Devotion level to your patron god. Belief and Devotion are increased by ensuring the population have their basic needs met, by building religious buildings such as Fanum, Shrines, and Sanctuaries, and by having a positive City Status with the Imperial Governor Concordia.
You can check your Devotion/Belief level by either clicking Island Belief on the top bar of your screen, or by selecting the Religion tab to the left. These will generally be the same number, but if you swap your island’s patron god for another your Devotion returns to zero. When this happens, you will have some time to wait for Devotion to increase to match Island Belief.
If your people are unhappy, they aren’t likely to have much belief in the god who are supposed to protect them, so keep your Island Belief high by catering to the basic needs of every person living there. Click the homes of different islander types, for example Plebians or Nobles, and see if they lack some essentials. It is also worth looking over the entire island layout to ensure your people’s happiness isn’t being negatively affected by nearby buildings (particularly those providing smelly or unhealthy environments). Keep Happiness and Health high and your Island Belief will follow.
