For many, NBA 2K is not just a game, but a real portal to the world of big basketball. After all, not everyone is ready to get up early to watch their favorite team’s matches live – the time difference with America makes this difficult. But here you can go out on the court yourself, take control of legends like Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant or LeBron James and lead them to the championship. Moreover, the new part of the simulator has prepared one very pleasant surprise for Russian players.

Players do everything they can to captivate the audience and judges at the slam dunk contest – sometimes it seems like they left physics somewhere outside the court. Flying over people, intricate feints in the air, throws with a rebound off the backboard – all for the sake of becoming the author of the most spectacular moment of the evening. This spirit of the show is perfectly conveyed in the game – here you can not only jump above your head, but also feel like a real basketball circus artist.
It is interesting that this year the developers decided to take a step towards European basketball. The game features 14 top clubs from Europe, participants of the Euroleague, including Moscow CSKA. This is an important addition: the style of play in Europe is noticeably different from the American one – there is more tactics, an emphasis on ball possession, well-thought-out positional attacks and competent “zone” defense. The game tries to convey these differences, which gives a match with European participation a completely different feeling. However, for now, all this looks like a preparation for something bigger – European teams are simply added to the general pool, without a separate mode, tournament or full integration. I want to believe that this is just the beginning, and in the next issue we will see a real Euroleague with cups, derbies and all the appropriate atmosphere. Fans of the classics also have something to do. The game features NBA legends: Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen and other cult figures. And the most interesting thing is that you can arrange a duel between them in the style of street basketball, without coaches, schedules and cameras – just a ball, a ring and the spirit of rivalry.
As for the modes, there are no revolutions here: the usual career for one player, club management and exhibition matches remained in place. But there is also a novelty – a special mode dedicated to LeBron James, called Path to Greatness. This is an attempt to follow the path of one of the main stars of modern basketball. In the first part of the career, you play for the Miami Heat, and then, in an alternative universe, decide where LeBron will go next. The plot seems ambitious, but, frankly, it quickly loses interest – after a few games, you catch yourself thinking that it is easier and more exciting to return to the good old career, where everything develops more organically and with real challenges. Overall, the game remains a solid sports simulator – with new faces, familiar mechanics and a couple of nice additions. But there is still potential for growth, especially if we talk about the introduction of European basketball for real, and not “for show”.

NBA 2K14 is the case when there is a video game on the screen, but the feeling is that you are watching a broadcast of a real match. Especially when the ball is in the hands of Milos Teodosic. The CSKA basketball player is recreated with such precision that his movements, facial expressions and style of play make you forget for a moment that you are holding a gamepad in your hands. The controls are still great – and this is good news. The main actions, as before, are tied to the right stick: it is responsible for throws and feints. This approach allows you to feel the ball and control the players as intuitively as possible. The player can easily give “blind” passes, perform feints and even throw the ball into the air, for a fierce dunk from a teammate. All this is not only pleasant to watch, but also incredibly involving in the process.
However, simply “poking” the sticks is no longer enough here. In NBA 2K14, the developers have added many new options for playing the ball, and at first it’s easy to get confused. Sharp dribbling, changes in direction, more complex attack schemes — all this takes time to master. If earlier it was possible to win on pure enthusiasm, now you won’t get far without strategic thinking and combination play.
In addition, the opponent’s artificial intelligence has grown noticeably. It no longer falls for trivial feints, blocks passing lines, especially diagonal ones, and confidently closes the space at the baseline. Even at a low difficulty level, you won’t be able to just take the ball and run across the entire court alone. You’ll have to think through each attack, play the pass, lure the defense out and choose the moment to throw. This adds depth and realism to the game, turning each match into a tactical confrontation.
In terms of atmosphere, NBA 2K14 also didn’t disappoint. During breaks, cheerleaders appear on the court, mascots entertain the spectators, a bunch of statistics flash on the screen, and commentators try to insert witticisms and discuss what is happening, as if you were really watching ESPN. All this creates the impression that you are in the stands of a real arena. Each team, each player is recognizable, with a characteristic manner of behavior on the parquet.
But with all this, nothing has changed globally. Everything listed above, we have already seen in the previous part. NBA 2K14 looks better, the movements have become a little smoother, and the animations are richer, but there was no revolution. This is still the same game that we loved last year, only polished and brought to a shine. It feels like the series is starting to enter the same phase as FIFA in its time – stagnation. The developers are in no hurry to make radical changes, perhaps because there is simply no competition. Who else releases basketball simulators of this level? No one. And it seems that this is what is holding back progress. 2K Sports can still afford to simply improve the old stuff — and fans will still buy it.
However, even without breakthroughs, NBA 2K14 remains one of the best sports games on the market. The level of immersion, detail, and gameplay — all of this is still impressive. Especially for those who value realism, teamwork, and the atmosphere of a big basketball show. Yes, we were not shown anything fundamentally new. But if you are an NBA fan, this is still a must-play. We can only hope that next year the series will receive the impetus that will take it to a new level. In the meantime, we can only enjoy what we have: a cool, albeit a little predictable, basketball game.
