Pandemic supplements’ unintended consequences show why universal basic income won’t work – cleveland.com

The Dec. 30 column by Eduardo Porter, “Why did Bidenomics fail to deliver at the polls,” is off the mark. During the pandemic, the government provided income supplements to most taxpayers. While for some this extra income was desperately needed, for many it was used to enhance their standard of living. When the supplements ceased, return to the old lower living standard was anathema, so they attempted to maintain the new standard without the supplements. The result was increased debt and other financial strains, which in turn produced the perception of poor government economic performance.
Many people favor a universal basic income. The pandemic-era income supplements are an example of such a program. Clearly, they failed. So much for that idea.
