Even before the release of Stray, the public seemed to have fallen in love with the game in advance: pre-orders were sold out like hot cakes, and after the release, real madness began. The project instantly became a hit for Annapurna Interactive, soared to the top of the charts, and the online steadily remained at the level of 50 thousand players. On Steam, there are enthusiastic reviews that even famous studios dream of.
But what is the reason for this phenomenal popularity of Stray? Is it just the charismatic ginger cat, so realistically transferred to the screen that even real domestic cats get hooked on his adventures? Or does the game still have some other trump cards that can captivate even those who are indifferent to whiskered and tailed ones?

Stray is a game in which everything seems to revolve around a cat, but the furry hero himself remains a mystery. Who he is, where he is from, why – no one knows. Just a cat. Red, mustachioed, with character. His day begins like any purring one: he basks next to other cats, washes himself with his paw, walks back and forth without doing anything. Everything is calm, almost idyllic. But it quickly becomes clear – something is wrong around. Instead of the usual streets – the ruins of the city, covered with moss and rust. No people, no other intelligent creatures. Only silence and wind in the empty alleys.
What happened here? Another end of the world? Apparently so – and soon we will learn the details. During one of the forays, the cat stumbles and falls into the dark depths. So he finds himself in an underground city – gloomy, but still alive.
Life here, of course, is its own, peculiar. The first people you meet are zurks. Small, vicious, almost mosquito-like creatures that fly in a flock and do not distinguish who is in front of them – a cat, a robot or someone else. You can’t share with them – you can only flee. Therefore, meditative walks along the alleys suddenly change to sprints. Sometimes, to get rid of the threat, you need to solve a puzzle – nothing complicated, but quite tense.
But much more interesting here are the inhabitants with whom you can talk – intelligent robots. Their behavior is … strange. They live like people, but it looks like a crooked parody: they cook food that they do not eat, put on clothes that they do not need, are sad and happy, as if they are trying to be someone they have never been. The cat, perhaps, does not care much, but the player has something to think about.

Some of these robots dream of getting to the surface. They say that the way there is almost closed – the tunnels are swarming with zurks, and there are few passages. But they don’t give up. This is where the common story begins: the cat, without wanting to, becomes part of these attempts. He is physically weak, but agile and silent, and in tandem with the robots he is capable of much. Fortunately, the ginger one is not left alone. Soon he meets B-12 – a tiny drone that becomes not only a navigator and flashlight, but also a translator. This miniature assistant performs several important roles at once:
Without him, it would be just a beautiful walk with a view of cyberpunk, but with him, it’s already history. A story about a cat who, without knowing it, became an important part of someone else’s world. About a world where even iron hearts can hope.
It is impossible not to dwell in more detail on the city and those who live in it. I will say, perhaps, not the most popular thing – but I was much more touched not by the fluffy cat, which everyone unanimously admires, but by the rusty inhabitants of the underground slums. Well, a cat is a cute cat, of course, but a rather unambiguous character. But with the robots and their habitat, everything is much more interesting and deeper.
The city in the game is located deep underground, and there has never been sunlight here. Nevertheless, it looks surprisingly familiar: high-rise buildings with apartments, narrow streets with bars and shops, nooks and crannies, roofs on which the cat can lie so comfortably. Everything seems typical – but in this underground world there are nuances that distinguish it from other game cities.
Here are a few things that make the local space special:
Immersion enhances the minimalism of the interface. All contact with the outside world is through the companion robot B-12: he is a translator, an inventory, and an assistant. And so that the player does not get lost, the developers masterfully place light accents – the necessary routes seem to attract the eye by themselves. But the main thing in this city is its inhabitants. Each of the local robots has something to tell. Someone has a sore soul, someone just wants to help, and with someone you can make an unobtrusive acquaintance. For example, you can find notes and bring them to a street musician – he will play a melody for us, while the cat will purr peacefully nearby.
However, if you look more closely, it becomes clear: the locals are not just robots. This is a metaphor. They imitate everyday life, play roles that they have long since gotten used to, like actors who have forgotten that the stage is not reality. And when a cat bursts into their measured life, the usual rhythm fails. In fact, this city is dead. It died a long time ago – and that is why it looks so eerily alive. This is a space where everything has stopped, frozen, but continues to move by inertia. And I want to say a special thank you to the developers for this atmosphere. I have not experienced such pleasure from a simple walk through the levels for a long time – as if I fell into a dream that I do not want to interrupt.
Stray is not about gameplay innovation. If you put aside the unusual presentation and style, then we have a completely classic adventure. To advance through the story, you need to complete simple tasks – run away from opponents, solve easy puzzles, look for the necessary items and take them to important characters. All this works according to a long-familiar pattern: nothing complicated, nothing unexpected. The passage will take only a few hours, and Stray does not even have time to get boring. But if you start digging and looking for something to find fault with, then the gameplay can be called predictable, and the plot – a little naive. However … what difference does it make if the main character here is a real cat? Not a person, not an android, not a creature from another dimension – but the most ordinary ginger cat, and even with gorgeous animation and recognizable habits.
He walks like a real one, jumps, sharpens his claws, rubs against your legs, can just lie down and sleep, curled up in a ball – and all this is absolutely not necessary for the passage. But it is these little things that turn Stray into something special. The cat turned out to be so alive that any emotions towards him are absolutely sincere. And surrounded by insensitive, albeit charismatic robots, he seems almost real.
Yes, Stray evokes affection and delight precisely because of its furry protagonist, but that is not the only thing that takes it. Even if in his place there was a dog or a mouse made with the same love, some of the magic, of course, would evaporate, but the charm of the world, its visual development and atmosphere would still remain at its best. This city is as if cut out of a dream: a little post-apocalyptic, a little sad, but surprisingly cozy.
Even if you are completely indifferent to cats, Stray is still worth trying – for the impressions, for the peace, for the emotions.
