One in a series of riding profiles ahead of the June 2 provincial election:
This mostly urban riding stretches from the city limits in the west and north to Wonderland Road in the east and Southdale Road in the south. London West covers the Byron, Hyde Park and Oakridge neighbourhoods and juts east to take in Old South. Edging out London North Centre by 1,050 people in the 2021 census, London West is the most populous of the city’s three core ridings. It’s also the fastest growing, with its population increasing 10.5 per cent from 2016 to 2021.

Housing and development are going concerns in London West, home to several new residential builds including in the West 5 and Hyde Park neighbourhoods. With 29,895 houses, according to the 2021 census, London West has the most single-detached homes of the city’s three core ridings. Road infrastructure, cycling and pedestrian paths, transit service and urban green space – the riding is home to Springbank Park, Sifton Bog and The Coves – are likely to be on the minds of families in London West’s suburban neighbourhoods.
New Democrat Peggy Sattler picked up the London West seat during a 2013 byelection, triggered when Liberal Chris Bentley, a minister in Dalton McGuinty’s cabinet, resigned his seat in the wake of a scandal involving gas-fired power plant cancellations during the 2011 provincial election. Sattler has held the seat with commanding leads ever since, winning by nine- to 26-point margins over her closest competitors. The federal London West seat has been held by the Liberals since 2015, when Justin Trudeau’s majority sweep snatched it from the Conservatives.
