100 Years Ago… – Jalsa Salana Qadian 1924: A spiritual journey through history – The Weekly Al Hakam

With the grace and mercy of God Almighty, Jalsa Salana [Qadian], held from 26 to 28 December [1924], was exceptionally vibrant and blessed. It concluded successfully, smoothly, and with remarkable efficiency.
The administrative details will be published separately. In this brief report, it suffices to say that the management was exemplary. The volunteers did their utmost to ensure the comfort of the guests. Providing for the needs of approximately 14,000 individuals is no small feat, yet, all praise be to Allah the Almighty, the arrangements were carried out with complete success. Every day, meals were served promptly, from 7 to 9 am, and again at night after the conclusion of the gathering. This year, the motor transport service was also commendable, and the arrangements for horse-drawn carriages were free of complaint.
The Jalsa Gah was set up this year [1924] in the grounds of the high school near Masjid Noor. It was initially estimated that around 12,000 attendees would participate, so arrangements were made to accommodate up to 14,000 people. However, as often happens with any structure in Darul Aman, its capacity appeared insufficient once it was completed. This was precisely the case here.
During Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II’s[ra] address, all the galleries, the main courtyard of the gathering site, and the entrances were packed. Many individuals expressed dissatisfaction at not finding space. It was later determined that the number of attendees was close to 15,000. The food and registration office reported that the external guests alone numbered between 13,000 and 14,000, with 5,000 being local residents and over 8,000 coming from outside the city. There was a separate count for those requiring dietary accommodations, and an additional 2,000 women participated in the gathering, for whom separate arrangements and programmes had been made.
Staff and students from both schools and offices, along with other residents of Darul Aman, were actively engaged in serving the guests. Many of these individuals worked tirelessly, unable to sleep at night, and still reported to their duties during the day, even while the gathering was in progress. In my opinion, it is a great sacrifice for an Ahmadi to not be able to listen to the Khalifa’s address in order to serve others. May Allah the Almighty grant them the best of rewards.
On Friday, the opening session of the gathering commenced at 9:15 am with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] leading the congregation in Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and silent prayer. Following his departure, the proceedings formally began at 9:30 am.
After the recitation of the Holy Quran and a poem, Mir Qasim Ali Sahib[ra] delivered a speech on Vedic Dharma and Islam. What a remarkable discourse it was! He metaphorically painted a vivid picture of Vedic Dharma, blending subtle humour with profound insight. Using multiple arguments, he demonstrated that Islam is a universal and completely authentic religion, while Vedic Dharma is insignificant in comparison. He further argued that adherence to the commandments of Vedic Dharma is practically impossible.
Following this, Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib[ra] presented a report of Sadr Anjuman Ahmadiyya. This was likely the first such report that captivated the audience, who listened with rapt attention. Mufti Sahib[ra] provided a brief account of the activities across all departments, mentioning the commendable efforts of workers from the smallest to the highest ranks.
Next, Hazrat Master Abdul Rahim Nayyar Sahib[ra] took the stage. He delivered a comprehensive account of the geographical, political, and cultural characteristics of West Africa, followed by a detailed narrative of his work there. For an hour, the audience listened attentively. His voice was clear and resonant, and his eloquent style was captivating, especially when interspersed with poetic recitations, which added to the enchantment. This concluded the first session, and the attendees proceeded to perform ablutions.
Thereafter, Huzoor[ra] came and delivered the Friday sermon. After the Jumu‘ah prayer, the second session began. Sheikh Abdur Rahman Sahib gave a discourse on the principles of prophecy and its predictions. Within an hour, he covered as much as time allowed, presenting arguments from the Holy Quran to demonstrate the concept of ijtihadi mistakes […], using refined reasoning.
Following this, Maulvi Muhammad Sarwar Shah Sahib[ra] spoke on the topic of the death of Jesusas. He offered unique interpretations from the Holy Quran and presented a new argument based on a hadith of the Holy Prophetsa. This concluded the second session, marking the end of the first day’s proceedings.
The second day’s proceedings began on time. Chaudhry Zafarullah Khan Sahib[ra], (Barrister-at-Law), delivered a lecture titled The Islamic Shariah: Its Relevance for Modern Times and All Nations. Chaudhry Sahib[ra] eloquently addressed the subject with great expertise, shedding light on multiple aspects. However, due to time constraints, he could only outline some key points [toward the end] without explaining them in detail. It is hoped that he will compile and publish his detailed discourse.
At 10:30 am, it was time for Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib’s[ra] speech. He narrated the wonderful life events of the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, creating an emotional atmosphere where hearts melted and inclined toward the Divine. Mufti Sahib’s[ra] naturally endearing style of speech was further elevated by the subject matter, which encompassed the description of the beloved of God Almighty, [i.e., Hazrat Ahmadas].
Next, Khan Sahib Zulfiqar Ali Khan[ra] presented a brief report on Nazarat (administration). Following this, Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad Sahib[ra] delivered a speech on the Propagation of Islam among Non-Muslim Communities in India. His address was marked by fervour; while presenting factual accounts, his captivating presentation deeply inspired the audience. He vividly highlighted the need for this endeavour, elucidated its spiritual and worldly benefits, and proposed practical methods ensuring success. This concluded the first session of the second day, after which the Zuhr and Asr prayers were offered combined.
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] then delivered a four-hour-long address from 3 to 7 pm, during which he exposed the reality of Bahá’ísm in such a manner that its falsehoods and misrepresentations became unmistakably evident. Huzoor[ra] narrated the history of this group and, using their own beliefs and authoritative texts, demonstrated that Mirza Husayn Ali had claimed divinity.
The third day’s proceedings began promptly on time. Maulvi Ghulam Rasul Sahib Rajeki[ra] presented some prophecies of the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, and explained how the existence of Hazrat Syedna Mahmud[ra] and every moment of his life is a testament to those prophecies. At 10:45 am, Hafiz Roshan Ali Sahib[ra] delivered a speech on the truthfulness of the Promised Messiahas. He provided evidence for the finality of prophethood, the continuation of prophethood after the Seal of the Prophetssa, and the authenticity of the prophethood of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas. Every statement of his was heart-touching, and attendees from all walks of life benefitted greatly. The speech concluded at 11:15 am.
Following this, Nazir Baitul Mal presented a financial report. He gave a comparative analysis of all Anjumans and outlined the financial needs of the Jamaat before the attendees.
Since Huzoor[ra] has been elevated to the station of Khilafat, it has been a deliberate practice not to emphasise donations during the annual gatherings, as the purpose of this event is not to collect money but to bring the Ahmadiyya Community together for spiritual advancement. Nevertheless, contributions were made during the session, while many had already submitted their donations directly to the treasury office or did so later. After this, the Zuhr and Asr prayers were offered combined.
Around 3:30 pm, Huzoor[ra] arrived at the gathering. That day, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] was scheduled to address the women. The speech began at 3 pm and continued until 8:45 pm.
In the beginning, Huzoor[ra] discussed the martyrdom of Maulvi Nematullah Khan Sahibrh. He elaborated on how Islam does not prescribe death as a punishment for apostasy and presented insightful interpretations of several Quranic verses to substantiate this point. He also supported his argument with sahih ahadith. Toward the end, Huzoor[ra] remarked that don’t consider the Amir of Kabul as the murderer of Maulvi Nematullah Khanrh, but in fact, the corrupt ideologies that provoke hostility against the believers [are the culprit]. He emphasised that our form of retribution should be to eradicate such ideologies from people’s hearts using irrefutable arguments and compelling evidence. During this mention, the eyes were filled with emotions and tears.
Afterwards, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] narrated the events of his travels to Islamic countries and Europe, highlighting 23 benefits that resulted from the journey. He also identified the obstacles to the propagation of Islam and explained the responsibility of the Ahmadiyya Community in addressing these challenges.
After this enlightening speech, Jalsa Salana [Qadian] concluded with a silent prayer.
Although Huzoor’s[ra] health had been frail for some time and he was experiencing extreme weakness, it was by the special grace of Allah the Almighty that he delivered a six-hour-long speech while standing throughout.
Additionally, every evening and again after the Fajr prayer until 10 am, Huzoor[ra] provided an opportunity for members of all jamaats to meet with him individually. Master Ali Muhammad Sahib BA BT, the private secretary, ensured that all attendees were afforded every possible convenience for these meetings. May Allah the Almighty grant him the best of rewards.
The stage management was entrusted to Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib[ra], with two naibeen: Hafiz Roshan Ali Sahib[ra] and Maulvi Jalaluddin Shams Sahib[ra]. The stage was quite spacious, and the arrangements were excellent.
May Allah the Almighty enable us to fully benefit from the spiritual and physical blessings of this gathering. Amin.

The Year in NFTs: Bitcoin Ordinals Boom, Airdrop Craze, and Brands Come and Go – Decrypt

The Year in NFTs: Bitcoin Ordinals Boom, Airdrop Craze, and Brands Come and Go
NFTs
The year began on shaky ground for NFTs, with major collections struggling to maintain value amid a persistently bearish sentiment. Floor prices dipped across the board as trading volumes waned, leaving many to question whether the NFT market could rebound.
Yet, as the year progressed into the final quarter, new bullishness in the broader cryptocurrency market set the stage for a late-year resurgence. Keep your expectations in check. It wasn’t a 2021/2022-like gold rush, but the vibe shift was welcomed by the NFT faithful.
Leading the charge was Pudgy Penguins, a once-declining collection that blossomed under new ownership starting in 2022, and hit new all-time highs above $100,000 in anticipation of its token airdrop.
This revitalization came as NFT marketplace competition intensified in 2024. Platforms like Magic Eden, Blur, and OpenSea battled for dominance, driving innovation through the inclusion of new blockchains and trading types.
From a sluggish start to an electrifying close, 2024 reminded the world that the NFT space is as dynamic and unpredictable as ever, fueled by the passion of its community and the constant push for innovation.
Here’s some of the top themes from the year in NFTs in 2024.
Though introduced at the start of 2023, Bitcoin Ordinals—or Bitcoin NFTs, more or less—truly found their stride this year thanks to significant infrastructure upgrades and growing adoption. Early challenges, such as the lack of user-friendly wallets and marketplaces, faded as wallets like XVerse and Unisat made holding Ordinals safer and easier.
Meanwhile, trading became more seamless as marketplaces like Magic Eden and OXK added critical support, drastically improving from the chaotic early days which saw Bitcoin Ordinals traded via spreadsheets in Discord servers.
This infrastructure evolution paved the way for standout projects to capture the spotlight, and helped “drive a renaissance in activity on Bitcoin,” according to Franklin Templeton.
Bitcoin Puppets and NodeMonkes led the charge, jumping from modest mint prices to peaks of 0.469 Bitcoin ($33,000) and 0.897 Bitcoin ($56,000) respectively, according to Magic Eden. While prices have since retraced to 0.138 ($14,000) and 0.125 Bitcoin ($12,650) respectively with the price of BTC itself being much higher, their impact on the Ordinals ecosystem remains significant. And other high-profile projects like Quantum Cats and Ordinals Maxi Business have similarly found fervent collector bases.
This year has been pivotal for NFT marketplaces, with OpenSea, Magic Eden, and Blur shaping the narrative in distinct ways. Blur retained dominance in Ethereum NFT trading, but its influence waned during the summer as the NFT bear market dragged on. Plus, its founding team had its attention elsewhere, launching Blast, an Ethereum layer-2 network.
Magic Eden, on the other hand, stole the spotlight with bold innovations in 2024. It led the charge on Bitcoin NFTs and added a decentralized exchange for Runes—Bitcoin's version of meme coins—after the halving. Excitement around the brand culminated in the launch of the ME token by the ME Foundation, which airdropped more than $700 million to users of its protocol.
Meanwhile, OpenSea—the leading marketplace from the 2021 boom—reemerged as a figurehead in the NFT world towards the end of the year. First, CEO Deven Finzer was outspoken about the company’s willingness to “stand up and fight” amid SEC scrutiny of the platform in September.
Shortly thereafter, buzz surrounded the marketplace as its OpenSea 2.0 marketplace overhaul began testing, ultimately fueling questions about a potential future token launch. That speculation only grew as users reported loyalty programs during the closed beta, and an OpenSea Foundation was registered in the Cayman Islands.
The NFT craze of 2021 saw major brands like Nike and Adidas rush into the space. But a bear market and fading sentiment on NFTs prompted some giants to retreat in 2024.
Among the most significant exits came with Nike’s decision to shut down RTFKT, the fashion and technology studio it acquired in 2021 for an undisclosed sum. Prior to Nike’s move, Starbucks wound down its Web3 loyalty program, Starbucks Odyssey, which the coffee giant operated on the Polygon blockchain.
DraftKings, a major player in the fantasy sports and sportsbook industries, abruptly discontinued its involvement with NFTs, closing its DraftKings Reignmakers fantasy game after several years of operation. The move came amid a class action lawsuit from users and lingering regulatory questions around the space.
But while some major brands took a step back, at least one made a big splash in Web3. McDonald’s jumped into a notable collab, teaming up with NFT collection Doodles for a holiday-themed campaign. The collaboration brought NFT branding into the physical world with custom holiday coffee cups available in McDonald’s locations. It signaled that even in a quieter NFT market, some brands still see potential in creative integrations.
Perhaps no narrative has gained as much momentum and attention in the last few months as NFT projects and their connections to fungible tokens, sometimes referred to as utility tokens for their ecosystems.
While NFT collections launching or having an associated token is not a new phenomenon, the rise of tokenization in 2024—and growing optimism about the U.S. regulatory landscape under President-elect Donald Trump—has put token launches squarely back in the limelight.
Most notably, Pudgy Penguins launched its ecosystem token PENGU on Solana this month. The token, which was eligible to claim by more than 7 million unique wallets, provided NFT holders and many other eligible parties with a more than $1.5 billion collective stimulus infusion.
But it’s not just the Pudgy Penguins that have gone the token route in 2024. This year alone the NFT collections Memeland, Milady, and Mocaverse all dropped tokens to their NFT holders and ecosystem participants.
All three of those respective tokens have surpassed and maintained market caps of more than $100 million at the time of writing—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s likely that this narrative will maintain some buzz going into 2025, when Azuki is poised to drop its anticipated ANIME token to its ecosystem and other Web3 users on AnimeChain. Plus, Yuga Labs, the parent company of Bored Ape Yacht Club is expected to continue strong promotion around ApeCoin (APE) amid the recent ApeChain launch.

George Perez turned a painful life as an ex-con into laughs as a comedy veteran – Los Angeles Times

On a recent Saturday night on Sunset Boulevard, a pair of black 1940s low-riders guided the diverse, sold-out crowd into the Comedy Store. Cypress Hill hung out in the green room. Los Angeles photographer and director Estevan Oriol oversaw six cameras and the taping of George Perez’s debut hour special, “Misunderstood,” presented by Foos Gone Wild.
“There were no fights,” Perez enthuses. “And,” with the mark of a successful Perez show traditionally measured in beer sales, “they sold out of 805s, Coors Lights and Peronis!”
Originally from Orange County (“the Republican L.A.,” he calls it), Perez’s material combines deeply personal narrative with sociopolitical insight. Before releasing “Misunderstood” in 2025, he headlines New Year’s Eve at the two-year-old Stand Up Comedy Club. He’s already working on new material for the occasion.
“That club has my culture all around it,” he says of the Bellflower venue. “Mexicans walk there; they don’t even drive. It’s by houses, apartments, by downtown, and every time I go there, it sells out. And I don’t even do Friday and Saturday. I do Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I love that club. I love the crowd. It’s dark and comics like to hang out.”
In Orange, Perez adored Cheech and Chong and was joking for his family by age 13. Later, he kept his construction co-workers cracking up. A girlfriend dragged him to an underground Wednesday comedy show at a Fullerton club called Rio. He recalls the warm-up comedians on the show being pretty corny. Toward the end when a headliner put his roasting skills against anyone in the crowd, Perez took the challenge.
“I went up there, I beat him, and I got the itch that day,” he recalls. “Then the next day, I quit construction.”
The show was hosted by Edwin San Juan (“SlantEd Comedy”), who mistook Perez for a ringer. The two remain close to this day. Perez recently bought a swap meet bootleg DVD of the 2001 evening labeled, “George Perez’s first time doing comedy.” Within eight months, he made his television debut on “LATV Live,” the primetime flagship series of L.A.’s first bilingual station.
Early grinding involved “the craziest s—,” including shows for 30 people at tweaker houses where his cousin sold meth and a spot called the Wild Coyote, “the Mexican Apollo” where Felipe Esparza, Gabriel Iglesias and Ralphie May hung out. He started setting up chairs and doing bringer shows at Casa Latina in Rosemead. A year later, he was hosting to 300 people every Tuesday as well as doing spots at the Hollywood Improv. Whatever the venue, Perez knew tickets had sold well when venue managers laughed, “The Coronas are done! You did your job!”
Audiences and industry reacted with surprise. “You thought [I] was going to talk about drive-bys, tortillas and lowriders and [I’m] up there talking about Shakespeare,” Perez says. He subverted stereotypes about growing up in the streets, got deep about being a young dad and discussed politics as a lifelong local.
Perez appeared on MTV, Showtime and Comedy Central before a previous version of his life caught up to him. Before comedy, he had been a gang member since seventh grade. There was vandalism, carjacking, gun charges and a steadfast refusal to walk from fights. Perez was a felon at 18, the same year his son was born.
Nearly two years later, he recalls, “The guy that I beat up sees me on MTV’s ‘Yo Mama,’ and he’s like, ‘That’s the guy that beat me up!’ ” Then the gang unit raided the strip club he was DJing at. “I fight it, I lose, and I’m in prison. There’s no more freedom of speech. So the comedian is completely gone. I’m now in survival mode.” He did three years.
Guards remembered seeing him perform at the Ontario Improv. Everyone knew he was on TV. He did perform inside sometimes, including for the warden and 500 inmates.
Most tattoos he sports today, he got as an inmate . He hid tobacco up his ass in a latex glove so he could sell it. He also saw riots, an OD, murder and fights, during one of which he lost a tooth. He continues experiencing nightmares and PTSD. When he got out in 2009, he met iPhones and his new baby daughter.
“Prison was the best thing for me; it humbled me,” he says. “There’s no more fighting. There is only using your words. It showed me discipline and being sober in there, I got to look outside myself and realize all the people that I hurt, that love me. I learned in prison when you make a mistake, you confess to it, you fix it and you grow.”
Fifteen years later, Perez’s credits include Netflix, HBO and the film “Taco Shop” with Carlos Alazraqui, Esparza and Brian Huskey. He records his first-hand “George Perez Stories” podcast and YouTube videos in a studio wallpapered with every vinyl comedy album he can find. His own January 2024 vinyl album “This Cholo Is Crazy” even featured sketch and music.
Something else had happened that he didn’t address for years. “I dig deep,” he says of the impetus for “Misunderstood.” “I had a son that passed away because the babysitter left him in the tub.” He wasn’t allowed to attend services. Following three years out on parole, he tangled with cocaine. “Drugs would numb me and I wouldn’t think about my son and the bad things that have happened to me in my life, friends that I’ve lost.”
Today he continues to be more honest about past tragedies and new growth than ever. At most, there’s a little tequila now and then to celebrate. His time in prison, journeys with addiction and struggles with mental health; all of it part of Perez’s artistic expression. “I just started writing. I’m no longer up there going, ‘Latinos make some noise!’ It’s, ‘This hurts, and I have to find a way out.’ It’s personal.”
“I mean, you can’t cancel me. I went to prison for three years when my comedy was in its prime, came out and I’m doing better than I was before. I’m not looking to be on a sitcom. I want to be an artistic comedian. When someone sees me onstage, like, ‘This guy looks like me. He’s gone through the same thing I’ve gone through.’ That’s what I want to accomplish.”

Candies Recalled In Missouri Over 'Life-Threatening' Health Risk – iHeartRadio

By Sarah Tate
December 27, 2024
As revelers continue to celebrate the holiday season, many dessert lovers may be looking to dig in to any new sweet treats they may have received. However, they may want to take notice of a new recall affecting candies sold around the country, including in Missouri.
Gardners Candies has recalled its 1.25 ounce packages of Cappuccino Meltaway Bars (lot number 082725, expiration date 08/27/25) over a potentially dangerous health risk as they may contain undeclared cashews, which could cause a "serious or life-threatening" reaction for consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts, according to a recall notice shared December 27 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
The recall also affects the Gardners Meltaway Treat Box in lot numbers 101625 and 112525 as the product contains two of the cappuccino bars alongside other flavors in the holiday-themed box.
The affected products were distributed in retail stores nationwide as well as through mail orders on the Gardners Candies website starting September 1, 2024.
According to the company announcement, the recall was initiated after it was discovered the product didn’t list tree nuts as a potential allergen and an investigation showed that the error occurred due to a "temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes."
There have been no illnesses reported as of time of the recall. For more information about the recall or to see product images, visit fda.gov.
